SUMMONED HOME: part 10, My Spare Body (VonStaufen's World)

SUMMONED HOME: part 10, My Spare Body (VonStaufen’s World)

by S. Eric Turner

Since returning to VonStaufen’s World from exile on Earth, Constanteen had been thinking about looking up the other witnesses to the Biodome P4 â??incident.’ He had been sworn to secrecy but that shouldn’t include talking to those who already new as much as he did. Also, it was hardly a secret: there had even been an attempt to blackmail him about it back on Earth, and there had been other hints that it wasn’t a well-kept secret. He wanted to know what experiences the others were having.
He sat at his DCU and put in a simple request to the KND for the contact information on former Lieutenant Dietrich Mueller of the Kaiserliches Herr (imperial military). That should notify someone of his intention and bring forward any objection. When he checked back thirty minutes later, he had the desired information: Lieutenant Dietrich Mueller was now a senior inspector with the Sanssouci police militia and could be easily contacted.

SENIOR INSPECTOR DIETRICH MUELLER was on the southern side of the Central Business District, overlooking the Potsdam River, when he saw the smoke to the north. The cold fall morning gave way to a somewhat warmer noon, and the black column was clearly visible against the clear blue sky beyond the tops of some of the larger commercial buildings. Taking one last drag on his cigarette before throwing it into the water below the railing he was leaning against, Mueller loosened his jacket – his hand stunner briefly visible on his belt before being covered again – and began walking towards the cloud, faster as he went. He began to feel sweat on his forehead, but his heart rate had not gone up from the exertion as he began to run. No. He came to a grim realization. He had lived in the capital of Sanssouci for almost two decades and he knew exactly where the smoke was coming from – Potsdam Palace and the Baron’s Assembly.

“On the scheme of this barbarous philosophy, which is the offspring of cold hearts and muddy understandings, and which is as void of solid wisdom as it is destitute of all taste and elegance, laws are to be supported only by their own terrors, and by the concern which each individual may find in them from his own private speculations, or can spare to them from his own private interests. In the groves of their academy, at the end of every vista, â?¦”
Baron Tobias VonLossow, who looked to be in his mid to late twenties, was at the podium of the Baron’s Assembly in full dress regalia performing his well-appreciated popular oratory. Mueller thought the holovideo was of remarkably good quality. Of course, the government of VonStaufen’s World had the best technology on the planet. At his salary, he decided against the expensive holovid application on his personal DCU. But the video was certainly revealing, providing a crystal clear view of the Baron’s speech with only a time and date stamp – 22 Nov 3988 – added. Mueller could understand why Baron VonLossow was popular among the people of VonStaufen’s World. He was an energetic speaker, and quite handsome.
“â?¦ you see nothing but the gallows. Nothing is left which engages the affections on the part of the commonwealth. On the principles of this mechanic philosophy, our institutions can never be embodied, if I may use the expression, in person – so as to create in us love, veneration, admiration, or attachmentâ?¦To make us love our country, our country ought to be lovely.”
Mueller lit a cigarette. Where did these fancy phrases come from?
“But power, of some kind or another, will survive the shock in which manners and opinions perish; and it will find other and worse means for its support. The usurpation, which, in order to subvert ancient institutions, has destroyed ancient principles, will hold power by arts similar to those that by which it has acquired it. When the old feudal and chivalrous spirit of fealty, which, by freeing kings from fear, freed both kings and subjects from the precautions of tyrannyâ?¦”
Baron VonLossow was certainly eloquent, but Mueller

Dreams of Earth (Among the Chosen)

Dreams of Earth (Among the Chosen)

by Barbara Bartholomew

The settlers, fleeing an over-crowded and starving Earth, gladly called their new world Sanctuary, but the natives called it Blood. Decades later a new group of fifteen-year-olds is sent to the planet where they find a recently abandoned city, its beautiful buildings and semi-tropical landscape empty, and discover they must defend themselves against predatory aliens. One young man and his friends are forced into leadershp roles as one at a time their population begins to be stolen away.

* * *

My name is Jamie Ward. I’m fifteen and I live with my sister and grandparents on a farm in the middle of the country. Even with the increasing migration to the outer worlds, parts of earth are still crowded–but not here in the middle of America. Too few people are left to produce the food the cities need and so we are allowed a comfortable, old-fashioned existence as long as we keep growing beef and grains for the rest of our country. I love it, love going to a small school with close friends, fishing and hunting, being self-reliant.

That’s why I wasn’t happy at all, after the tests, when I was among the chosen.

Why me? I’m an ordinary guy, good at sports, nothing special in the classroom. What is about me that I’ve been picked to send along with 99 other fifteen-year-olds, half boys and half girls, to a distant settler world.?

I can’t feel like this is a good thing.

The Abyss Above Us

The Abyss Above Us

by Ryan Notch

There is a place in the sky where there are no stars, no matter how deeply the astronomers gaze into it. Receiving its commands from a computer that hasn’t existed for twenty years.

Introverted network engineer Shaw is brought in to find out why.

All too soon he finds that while the night sky may be dark, it is not silent. A signal is coming from those coordinates. Creating a sound liquid and hypnotic with layers of data that suggest anything but randomness. A siren’s song that leads to horrific suicides in everyone who listens to it.

By the time Shaw realizes this, it’s too late to stop the signal he sent back into the night. A signal obviously received, for the abyss has begun to move.

And it’s moving towards us.

Eville Books 1&2: Eville and Eville's Most Wanted

Eville Books 1&2: Eville and Eville’s Most Wanted

by Holand Peterson

Mad Scientists.

Talking Brains in the Basement.

Mutant Klepto Spiders.

Psychotic Hunchbacks.

Vampire Mafia.

The End of the Universe.

Just Another Day on the Job.

Now you can enjoy the first two thrilling, hilarious and wildly imaginative books in the Eville saga for one low price!

In Eville, ride along with perpetually unlucky Alex Hobbs as he attempts to adjust to living in a bizarre world lying just beyond the edges of modern society. The guy at the employment agency told him that he’d be working in as an entry level scientific/medical assistant far out of city limits. As the new employee for the arguably brilliant and certifiably mad scientist, Serene Necrosia, Alex quickly discovers this dream job is way more than he bargained for. Being trapped in a creepy, mysterious mansion, withstanding the constant abuse from Quasimoody, a fiery hunchback, and daily fighting off the advances of a thirty pound tarantula were not in the job description. Nor was there any mention of rampaging squid demons from another dimension, lethal inventions and the possible end to all things. Literally. Filled with quirky humor, bizarre characters and pulse-pounding action, Eville is certain to entertain from start to finish.

The story continues in book two, Eville’s Most Wanted, where Alex, Serene and Quasimoody find themselves on the run after a catastrophic experiment. But it’s not just Daniel Hammett, the tough-as-nails Cyclops lawman, and his stoic assistant, Rafael Vega, that Alex and the gang need to worry about. The nefarious vampire mafia, the Cosa Nosferatu, goblin mercenaries and a mysterious assassin are all making a play for the fugitives as well, eager to use Serene’s discoveries for their own evil ends. Bullets will fly, goblins will croak and you’ll be left breathless as you join the heart-stopping chase that is Eville’s Most Wanted.

Regeneration (The Seventh Age of Man)

by Kevin Gordon

From the Ruins of Man, a boy must lead.

The Earth has been devastated by tragedy. After an alien voice broadcasts a Countdown around the world, all life above water ages 50 years. All plant and animal life is gone in an instant, and all human life ages 50 years. The stars change, signaling the Earth has traveled to a new location. The survivors are faced with two daunting tasks; how do they recover from disaster, and how can they prevent another from happening again?
Brian is a Prototype; a fourteen year old child, born shortly after Countdown, with chemically enhanced intelligence. He, and other children like him, work on preparing a Space Shuttle for launch to confront the aliens believed responsible for the tragedy. They live in the Homestead; one of the last communities of humans on Earth. Brian faces a father who despises the opportunities he has, a father born to be a Grunt; a class of people whose only function is to procreate and cleanse the cities of the plentiful dead. Brian was brought up learning philosophy and ethics, morality and reason, but as he matures, he finds they have little place in a world that uses the dead for mulch.
In Regeneration, the first book in the series; Seventh Age of Man, Brian must overcome his meek nature if he is to gain control of the Archetypes, and the Homestead itself. Charlie is now the default leader; one of the few surviving adults from pre-Countdown. Charlie fights with the Deaconess, a woman who tries to bring religion to the Grunts so she might use them as her personal army. Brian must gain Charlie’s trust if he is ever to learn the secrets of the Homestead, and must defeat the Deaconess in battle to prove his mettle. He must gain the loyalty of Gustav, leader of the soldier-class called Archetypes, if he is to have any hope of enforcing his rule. But most of all he must confront and defeat his father, whose tyranny has kept him weak and timid all his life. This is the Seventh Age of Man, and there is no guarantee there will be an Eighth. The series continues with the second book, Maturation, and concludes in the third book, Dessication.

The Fragmenting Universe

The Fragmenting Universe

by Alan Hall PhD

First up, despite its appearance, this is not a book-it’s an essay. It pertains to the cosmos and how matter will, in time, ebb away into nothing. For some unexplained reason, the expansion of the cosmos is accelerating. Whilst scientists think they know how the universe and matter came into existence-they aren’t so sure how this massive unravelling puzzle will end up. Other questions are discussed such as, what is the half-life of a proton? What happens to matter and its constituent atoms when the universe ebbs to an end? This short essay takes a look at these and other fascinating phenomena.

Leaving the Comfort Cafe

Leaving the Comfort Cafe

by Dawn DeAnna Wilson

From Dee Daily of The Romance Studio:

“Dawn DeAnna Wilson pens one of those tales of a small town and its colorful characters that is a joy to read. Even though the story is about people and their insecurities the way it’s told is priceless. The Mayor, Queen, the Snake Lady and many others evolve throughout. Their antics and the way the author brings the town to life make a perfect backdrop to a love story that has to help two people find the way to become who they want to be. Blythe’s story is a sad one in some ways but she brings so much joy to the book with her antics. Her exuberance is almost palpable as we read. Austin seems like an insecure man who has to come to terms with his life, his comparing himself to others and always falling short. Rather than take risks that might upset others he buries himself in action heroes while she hides within the ever-changing stories she tells.”

From The Long and Short of It, Romance Reviews:

“Every line of Leaving the Comfort Cafe is bursting with sparkling emotion. A genuine pleasure.”

A handsome, lonely man fresh from a hellish divorce, he meets Blakesley in a life or death situation. Thrown together in what could have been a devastating circumstance, he is nonetheless smitten by the beautiful woman with the sea-colored eyes. Try as he might, he can’t forget the spectacular young mother and he intends to pursue her.

Blakesley, too, is smitten with the gorgeous naval commander and becomes swept up in passion and attraction that neither one of them can control. Blakesley’s walls of defense slowly come down with Beck’s charm and gentleness, and her young daughters begin to learn what it is to trust again. As the pair fall desperately and hopelessly in love, Beck is determined to marry Blakesley even as his duties take him far away from her and right into the mouth of danger.

Tragedies threaten the pair and conflicts rise, but through it all, Beck and Blakesley’s love is strong and unbreakable. When a final threat looms, it’s up to Beck to save his wife in a showdown at the old Earp homestead where, once again, the Wild West reigns and ghosts from the history of old San Diego come full circle.

Roadmap Through Revelation

Roadmap Through Revelation

by Rick Schworer

For those who’ve picked up Revelation and wondered why Armageddon happens more than once, or which comes first, the Trumpets, the Vials, or the Seals, this is a book that will clearly chart out for you a timeline of events, harmonizing the four accounts of Christ’s Second Coming.

Whether you are new to Revelation or have studied it for years, you will enjoy the short stories that bring Revelation to life. Experience the faceoff between the two witnesses and the Antichrist at the temple. Watch as a living, breathing statue commands the world to worship the Antichrist and receive his mark. Rejoice as the Messiah rescues His chosen people hiding within the rock city of Petra.

This book will help to answer your questions with an in-depth look at the three raptures, the seventy-five days between the Tribulation and the Millennium, the differences between the Red Dragon, the Beast of the Sea, and the Beast of the Earth, and Daniel’s Beast; as well as the history of Baal, Nimrod, and Babylon.

Rev. 1:3, “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.”

“When I discovered that Revelation is divided up four times, I tried to find a harmony of it. By that I mean a book or commentary that takes all the accounts and examines them separately and then intertwines them. There are several harmonies of the Gospels available, so I thought I could find a harmony of Revelation. I couldn’t, and I still haven’t. There are several commentaries that touch on the subject, but to the best of my knowledge there are no harmonies of Revelation.”

“When Nimrod died, his wife Semiramis claimed that he was now the sun-god. Nimrod, extolled as the sun-god, was Baal. This is the same Baal that the Israelites had problems with throughout their history. It all started with his wife making him out to be a god after his death.

Not long after Nimrod’s death, his widow Semiramis gave birth to a son named Tammuz, or Bacchus. She claimed that the son was Nimrod reborn, as some kind of messianic savior. The sun and fire became the symbols for Nimrod, the sun-god, and the golden calf became the symbol for Tammuz, the child of Semiramis.

Yes, the golden calf problem that Israel had so many times started with this mixed up family…”

“The “pre-wrath” argument teaches that the church is raptured out in the middle of the Tribulation, before the wrath of God is poured out on the Earth. As already stated, this theory ignores the wrath of God in the first half. The only real evidence for this idea is I Cor. 15:52 which refers to us being raptured out at the “last trump.” The pre-wrath argument claims that we are raptured out at the Seventh Trumpet in Revelation – which would be this one. The problem is, the last Trumpet in Revelation is at the very end of the Tribulation, meaning, that if we’re raptured out at that point we go through all of the wrath of God. In the Old Testament, specifically Numbers 10, trumpets were used to move the camp or to give orders. This is what Paul is referring to. The “last trump” is God’s final command to the church on Earth, to “come up hither.”

“Why do so many of the commentators call these things bowls? The text always calls them Vials. They don’t call the Seals, stamps, or the Trumpets, flutes, but they always insist on calling these things bowls. A vial doesn’t even look like a bowl! A bowl is something you put bean dip in; a vial is shaped like a Coke bottle. Try dipping your chips in a vial filled with bean dip and you’ll see the difference.”

“It wouldn’t take long for perfect people who never die to fill the Earth with perfect people who will never die. What happens then? Well, there’s the entire universe, the new universe that is not cursed…”

The New Golden Age

The New Golden Age

by Storm Moon

We live at a pivotal time in human history, the old order of greed and corruption is ending and we are entering a new golden age. This year is 2012 which many believe marks the end of the world. It may be the end of our current order, but what comes next will be like Heaven on Earth by comparison. This short book outlines the great transition into a new golden age, last seen during early Atlantean times. This new society, which I call the Tribe of the Phoenix, will rise out of the ashes of the old order and bring us back into contact with ourselves, the Earth and each other. In the book Lifeforce Harmonics, this transition process is described in greater detail, alongside some of the metaphysical and alchemical processes that are occurring.

So You Think Your Mind Is Renewed?

So You Think Your Mind Is Renewed?

by Cornel Marais

Traditions of man nullify the Word of God. This book is all about breaking those traditions and is not a general feel-good-about-myself-I’m-a-good-Christian either. You will find that this is a straight forward and sometimes challenging book. This book was not written to show you everything you might be doing wrong, but instead to show you the treasures in you that are illegitimately hidden and often unknowingly kept from the world. I you as a believers lies the greatest grace-empowered treasure, to heal the sick, the set the captives free, to proclaim freedom and goodwill to all mankind. For God so LOVES the world that He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus, The Christ, to live in and through every believer by His Spirit, so that through Him and by His sacrifice, the lost can be brought back, the sick can be healed and the oppressed can be set free. – Cornel Marais

“Your life is transformed to the degree that your mind is renewed. Cornel’s book goes a long way toward removing the hindrances to that renewal.” Curry R. Blake, General Overseer of John G. Lake Ministries

Metanoia (Clarity)

Metanoia (Clarity)

by Andre Rabe

The good news of how God reconciled the world to Himself in Jesus Christ has always been radically and fundamentally different from the world’s way of thinking. In fact, measured by human standards of logic, it is pure foolishness. I mean, how wise is it to give abundant life to those who deserve death? How wise is it to forgive, even before a person realises how wrong they have been … even before forgiveness is sought … to love those who are at enmity against you?

It is in the light of this radical declaration of the gospel that questions are stirred. What does true repentance mean in the light of this gospel?

Wisdom Is A Heart Thing

Wisdom Is A Heart Thing

by b l landis

Where are the wise? In this world now saturated with learning, technology and communication are we getting any wiser? Are the graduates of high schools and colleges armed with wisdom when they leave? Knowledge is not the same as wisdom. People are ravenous information seekers, but where is the life changing wisdom? Education and technology don’t seem to quell the erosion of the moral fabric of our society or fill the hungers within mankind. In the Christian world you might hear that Christ is the answer, but how? How is Christ the answer? He is the answer because He is God’s wisdom to man. True wisdom is found in Him and accessed through Him.
We find Jesus introduced as the Savior or the Messiah. He is called the Lamb of God, or the Son of God. Around the Holidays He is presented as the Prince of Peace or Wonderful Counselor. These and many others are all correct portrayals of Him, but there is one more that you don’t hear as often. He is also Wisdom. God’s wisdom is where the power lies to change lives and circumstances.
Jesus Christ is the channel for this powerful, amazing, healing and life changing wisdom to come into our lives and impact our world. Wisdom is a heart thing and Jesus Christ is the pathway to it.

Where Eagles fly

Where Eagles fly

by ernest stokes

Many people have had out-of-body experiences when their spirits left their bodies, some whose flesh died only to come back to life when their spirits returned. This is a story about one sojourner on the earth who had just such an experience while he was praying at the altar during a Sunday church service. In his case, he did not die; but he suddenly found himself going somewhere. Thinking that he must have been dreaming, he could plainly see his body still kneeling at the altar as his spirit departed.

What happens when the spirit leaves the body? Where does the spirit go? Be an eyewitness to the events that unfold for the sojourner in this story, from the moment the Holy Spirit carries him up to God’s Holy City of Zion for an unforgettable day. Walk with him as Jesus takes him on a guided tour of heavenly places. Step into the sojourner’s shoes as the Father welcomes him to the city and dresses him in holy array. Join him in the banquet hall of the temple for a spectacular celebration. And, upon his return to his body on earth, still kneeling at the altar, experience the joy of a changed man.

2012 and Beyond (2012 AND BEYOND - The Present Time)

2012 and Beyond (2012 AND BEYOND – The Present Time)

by Hans Liszikam

Before we can even begin to look at the possibilities of what can be expected to eventuate in 2012 and beyond and the ending of this 26,000 year evolutionary cycle of our solar system and humanity, we must first take a hard and realistic look at where we (humanity as a whole) are now, physically, mentally and spiritually, what we are doing to ourselves, to others, the lower levels of life forms and our planet to get a clearer picture of what is happening in our world today.
We must dispense of the rose coloured glasses and see the reality of our world for what it is today. Once we do so, we will undoubtedly realize, we cannot continue in the same way we have been until now!

Since the late 1960’s to early 1970’s when the name new age first appeared, there has been ongoing talk about the coming of the Aquarian Age and of a new humanity. The Aquarian Age officially commenced in 2000 AD and as with all monumental events, the transition from one age to another does not happen over night. It will take place over a period of several hundred years, and many conditions and situations on earth and in humans will change in the process, because this is what the event is all about!
This alignment is to engage humanity in a quantum leap of spiritual awakening to levels (we should have attained 2000 years ago), levels that have never been experienced before. Book I among other topics looks at the present situation of world and lives, the decline of western civilisations and global economies. Why shifts happen, changes observed, the predicted end times, commitment and the push for a one world government to rectify all of our woes.

A lengthy survey has revealed, only an estimated 20% of the world’s population are considered to have some sort of spiritual knowledge or awareness. The remaining 80% are living a purely physical existence; with many literally being spiritually dead. The window of opportunity for a change, to raise our awareness to reach higher dimensions of consciousness, is said to have opened in January 1992, and will remain open til December 2012.

The Eden Enigma: A Beginning

The Eden Enigma: A Beginning

by Timothy Stephany

One of the best known stories out of myth is that of the Garden of Eden; with its players of God, Adam and Eve, the sly serpent, and the â??forbidden fruit’. Yet behind its captivating simplicity it holds a secret which is only to be uncovered through delving into the deep origins of human belief. These depths are explored for the first time in this revealing exposition of narrative progression which crosses paths of genre, subject, and discipline. Across continents and eons it collects the elements necessary to disclose the true nature of the garden story, while revealing a far more comprehensive view of human prehistoric religion and its link with the cosmos.

Archeofuturism: European Visions of the Post-Catastrophic Age

Archeofuturism: European Visions of the Post-Catastrophic Age

by Guillaume Faye

Archeofuturism, an important work in the tradition of the European New Right, is finally now available in English. Challenging many assumptions held by the Right, this book generated much debate when it was first published in French in 1998. Faye believes that the future of the Right requires a transcendence of the division between those who wish for a restoration of the traditions of the past, and those who are calling for new social and technological forms – creating a synthesis which will amplify the strengths and restrain the excesses of both: Archeofuturism.

Faye also provides a critique of the New Right; an analysis of the continuing damage being done by Western liberalism, political inertia, unrestrained immigration and ethnic self-hatred; and the need to abandon past positions and dare to face the realities of the present in order to realise the ideology of the future. He prophesises a series of catastrophes between 2010 and 2020, brought about by the unsustainability of the present world order, which he asserts will offer an opportunity to rebuild the West and put Archeofuturism into practice on a grand scale.

This book is a must-read for anyone concerned with the course that the Right must chart in order to deal with the increasing crises and challenges it will face in the coming decades.

Guillaume Faye was one of the principal members of the famed French New Right organisation GRECE in the 1970s and ’80s. After departing in 1986 due to his disagreement with its strategy, he had a successful career on French television and radio before returning to the stage of political philosophy as a powerful alternative voice with the publication of Archeofuturism. Since then he has continued to challenge the status quo within the Right in his writings, earning him both the admiration and disdain of his colleagues.

‘Archeofuturism is thus both archaic and futuristic, for it validates the primordiality of Homer’s epic values in the same breath that it advances the most daring contemporary science.’ –Michael O’Meara, from the Foreword

In any national election, certain terms almost always abound, such as debt, deficit, Social Security Trust Funds, employment, unemployment. But what do they really mean? Daemon in the Tenderloin

Daemon in the Tenderloin

by Phil Semler

When fifty-six year-old white Asiaphile Philip Beckett, a private dick in San Francisco’s rough Tenderloin district, takes on a case at Christmas time to search for Ellie Templeton, a 14-year-old runaway girl from idyllic Chico, who may already be working as a prostitute, he’s sucked into a world of perversion, cruelty, and violence.
The gritty downtown Tenderloinâ??thirty blocks of resident-hotels, alcoholics, homeless, junkies, male and female prostitutes, and hoards of the mentally disturbedâ??is filled with criminals waiting to prey on any tourists and Christmas shoppers who dare wander just a few blocks from upscale Union Square or the nearby Hilton. Also in the “TL,” live thousands of hopeful immigrant families with their children, hardworking folks, retirees, survivors, community organizations, Glide Memorial Church, cheap ethnic food, and now even a few hipster clubs.
Beckett is philosophical, brooding, looking for release from his tortured thoughts by meditation, and eating fiery Thai food at the Thai Me Up restaurant. Haunted by childhood memories of sexual abuse by his mother, Beckett is a survivor himself. He’s haunted by the many voices in his head. Like his hero, the Greek philosopher Socrates, Beckett believes he hears daemon voices. Daemons, according to Socrates, are the divine voices he hears, which can deter him from what he’s about to do. Beckett must always listen to the voicesâ??his strength and weaknessâ??but which at any moment threaten his sanity.
Beckett’s long-suffering girlfriend, Maggie Chang, who runs the No Exit, a small cutting-edge theatre in the Tenderloin, wants them to go to Thailand for a vacation after the Christmas holidays to rekindle their relationship.
During the holidays, Beckett has a couple of gigs as Santa at Glide, plans on distributing fifty stolen iPods to any “TL” student with a B average or better. First, he must roam the mean streets of the Tenderloin fighting crack dealers, pimps, and finallyâ??powerfully-connected ruthless developers looking to raze the entire neighborhood â??trying to find the missing girlâ??while wrestling with the demons in the Tenderloin and in his own head.

In the summer of 1880, it’s not just gray skies and bad weather threatening boomtown Leadville, Colorado. But when the body of Lizzie, one of Flo’s women, is discovered and Inez learns that Flo has another silent business partner whose identity she will not divulge, Inez begins to have second thoughts. The Storm Glass

The Storm Glass

by Fred Limberg

Like a thunderhead heedlessly bearing downâ??The Storm Glass builds in fearsome intensity, drawing the good, the truly evil, and the innocent together when a despicable crime rocks the small city of Hannibal. Wilson is powerless to stop the heart rending violence and brutality. Getting revenge is an entirely different matter.

Jim Wilson, a fiftyish â??regular’ guy, is anything but. For a decade he has used an extraordinary antique ring, a trinket found in an antique store, to feed the kitty, as he likes to put it. Using the invisibility and ability to levitate that the ring magically allowsâ?¦Wilson is, arguably, the world’s greatest sneak thief; a phantom with a sense of humor and a taste for dopers’ dollars.

On a well-deserved vacation, a cruise the length of the Mississippi on his boat, the Thief of Hearts, Jim and Iris encounter a sprightly retired admiral, Hans, and his charming wife, Millie, who are heading downstream to their home in Hannibal, Missouri.

None of them are aware of the convoluted plot to utterly destroy a local bank, a crime involving millions of dollars and cold blooded murder. None of them suspect the portly local banker of the depravity and homicide he’s capable of, aided by a hardened thief and killer just out of prison and lusting for the biggest score of his life.
No, Jim’s biggest worries are that Iris wants him to retire from the business and he fears that Hans, who is actually ex-CIA, may know more about the ring than Jim likes.

But after heart-rending tragedy befalls during the robbery, Jim and Hans mount their own investigation heedless of the threats by the inept local Sheriff and the confused FBI agent in charge of the case.

They don’t have to follow the rules and they aren’t trying to put the bad guys in jailâ?¦they’re after paybackâ?¦call it justice or retributionâ??or the cold-blooded quest for revenge that it actually is.

They’re bringing the bad guys down and they’re not afraid to use Jim’s ring to make that happen.

Implicated

Implicated

by Peter Michael Rosenberg

Erdogan Denizli cleans up the messes other people make of their lives. Not their dirty houses or their dirty clothes – no, Erdogan gets a call when a bathroom is sprayed with arterial blood after a shamed pervert cuts his own throat, after a home-invasion-gone-wrong leaves bits of brain ground into the carpet, or when an undiscovered death drips putrefying body fluids into the apartment below. He’s a crime scene cleaner in Ventura County, California and after forensics have done their job, he gets to work…

It’s not his job to feel the pain of those left behind, or to feel sadness at a wasted and unmourned life, but he does. He can’t help it. But he doesn’t get involved; he can’t afford to – he can’t risk dredging up the shadows of his own past. But when, on a routine crime scene clean-up, he finds a piece of overlooked evidence, evidence that implicates the cops in an assassins-for-hire conspiracy, he can’t look the other way, because now his own life’s in danger. But who do you turn to for help when it’s the cops that want you dead?

Implicated is a contemporary but noirish thriller with a “cast of characters straight out of an Elmore Leonard novel”: Valerie, the femme fatale who wants to nail the cops who killed her husband… Maxim, the Azerbaijani mobster who wants in on a little bit of the American Dream … ill-fated Sammy the Schmuck with his penchant for other people’s lives (and other people’s money). And Brad and Mikey, the cops who’ve long since thrown “Serve and Protect” out the window.

“Sometimes history is  best viewed through the lens of fiction.  Read this Hollywood sizzler and see why.”  Mark Rydell, director of the film, On Golden Pond.
Greg Schreiner, President of the longest running

presents a fascinating fictional account of the days
surrounding the death of Marilyn Monroe. It weaves an alternate story

Kirkus Reviews on Don O’Melveny’s, prequel Last Year in the Life of Marilyn Monroe, “Giving voice to public icons is no easy task, but O’Melveny’s lines

The Missing Man

The Missing Man

by Andrew White

Gone Girl meets The Big Sleep: “Flowing prose has the sense of murderous urgency, reminiscent that of classical hard-boiled mysteries.”

For the longest time, nobody even realized that Richard Barnes had joined the ranks of the 2,000 people who go missing each day in the United States.

It is the middle of yet another cloud-free, rain-free, pseudo-idyllic summer in Los Angeles. It’s the heart of the modern depression and NPR is playing interviews with those affected on the hour, every hour. It’s on just such a day that Jack Pelham, a freelance reporter for a paper you haven’t heard of, and a man whose personal and professional life is crumbling around him, is sent to interview a woman who reported that her husband went missing – six months ago.

Even with that peculiarity, Jack goes in thinking it’s a nothing story, and he keeps thinking that right up until the moment he’s accosted in by men brandishing firearms demanding to know everything he knows about the missing man. It’s from that moment it all becomes something Jack never saw coming. The chase for the story – from the underbelly of LA to the rough and tumble of Baja California – proves all-consuming and damaging – to him, to everyone around him. Before the day is done, Jack is no longer writing the story, he becomes the story – right up to the point of he himself becoming the missing man.

Full Bone Moon

by G. Cameron Fuller

Someone is killing West Virginia University students. Again.

Six years ago, two WVU freshmen were last seen hitchhiking back to their dorms after seeing a movie in downtown Morgantown. Their bodies were later found in the dark woods south of town. E.P. Clawson was convicted of the murders, but Michael Chase, a reporter for the Herald-Dispatch, never thought Clawson was guiltyâ??a belief that nearly cost him his career.

Now it appears the murders have started again. Female WVU students are disappearing, and their defiled bodies are found with ritual markings. No Country for Young Women

No Country for Young Women

by Martin Thomas

Megan Malone, born out of wedlock in the United States, never knew violence as a child. When her mother took her back to Ireland and married John Taylor – that changed.

This is the story of how domestic violence and abuse forge a bond between a mother and her daughter forcing them to confront the cruel parochialism of rural Ireland in the 1970s.

At the heart of the novel, a young girl perseveres with a campaign to see that justice is meted out when people break the law.

When a reactionary priest attempts to block her struggle, he serves as a catalyst to highlight the darkest secrets of the Catholic Church and precipitates an investigation into the aberrant behaviour of abusive clergy.

The novel explores the personal dilemmas of those caught up in the aftermath. It pursues the history of particular cases through the eyes of the innocents and the not so innocent, contrasting the domesticity of the young and unsophisticated with the brutality of the abuse they suffer.

In the end, the simplicity of long-held beliefs and the innate goodness that binds people together triumphs despite battles with the police, the Church and the justiciary.

This is a story about love and courage, and how an indomitable spirit can bring a powerful institution to its knees – and shows why Ireland in the 1970s is ‘no country for young women’.

H.O.T.E.L.

H.O.T.E.L.

by Brian M.W.

H.O.T.E.L. is an acronym that I created meaning H:Hunt, O:Observe, T:Track, E:Eliminate, and L:Learn. These are the rules of the hunter; the life guide of a demented billionaire who has decided that the only way to fulfill his life’s ambition is to hunt humans. However, no one has ever tried to do it like this before. He builds a hotel that is like a human roach trap, wherein, people check in but they don’t check out. Before he hunts down and kills his prey, he wants to be sure that they are worthy of his attention. So he tests them within the confines of his hotel by seeing if they can survive his death traps. Even if they temporarily escape the inevitable, they have only earned the right to be hunted to the death. Jason Hastor lost his mind in Africa. May God help him to find it again.

I happened to be browsing around for interesting titles/pitches and happened to come across this one. Read your profile and I think you’re right somewhat. I don’t see a lot of African American writers who write horror/thriller, not to say that they don’t exist out there, but not the level of fame such as Steven King and Dean Koontz. I’ve read books like The Color Purple by Alice Walker, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf by Ntozake Shange, and many others who I can’t remember this very moment. I’ve added you to my watchlist, so I’ll be checking out this book since it sounds very exciting! 🙂

The Cannibal

The Cannibal

by Jesse Bier

Late one night beside the still, dark waters of the Blackfoot River, Virgil Sypher brutally dismembered and ate a man. Or so the Missoula County Court decreed. Two years have passed since Wilbur Cole reported on the case for the Missoula Tribune. Now, Virgil Sypher is dead, having jumped from the second-story of a prison several months after being incarcerated. The case is long closed. But why can’t Wilber shake the feeling that he and the police missed something?

Yes, authorities pulled Virgil Sypher over in California, several fingers in each pocket. Yes, Sypher confessed and later killed himself in what seemed to be an act of contrition. But since then, Cole has risen to Assistant Editor at the Missoula Tribune, and he’s finally in a position to pull together the loose threads: the dog gnawing on a half eaten thigh twenty miles from the murder site; Virgil’s rambling and mixed details from his confession. Now, Wilber is hunting back through the facts, and slowly coming to suspect the true cannibal still lurks somewhere in his small Montana town.

With a keen wit and literary scope, Jesse Bier’s suspenseful novella dives into the psychology of cannibalism and will leave you wondering what monster might lie along the feverish banks of your own mind.

Event Driven (A Rupert Hood Spy Thriller)

Event Driven (A Rupert Hood Spy Thriller)

by Andrew Cartmel

Meet Rupert Hood. Every day he joins the wage slaves commuting to Putney, in south-west London, to one more apparently dull job in a high street estate agents.

But the company is a front — for the UK’s intelligence service.

And Rupert Hood isn’t an estate agent. He’s a secret agent.

In the second of Andrew Cartmel’s brilliant re-imaginings of the classic 1960s spy caper, Rupert Hood is thrown back into action — and facing the deadliest challenge of his career.

Someone has been scavenging waste plutonium and using it to create a bomb.

A deadly terror attack is planned on the City of London — one that could ruin the global financial system.

But who? And why?

Hunting down the terrorists means Rupert going undercover in one of the world’s most sophisticated and wealthiest ‘event-driven’ hedge funds to learn more about the likely target.

But as Rupert gets to grips with the world of high finance, events are about to be driven out of control — with catastrophic consequences.

And in a nerve-shredding chase he must confront the deadliest — and strangest — opponent of his life.

‘Event Driven’ is a brilliantly fast-paced, gripping action thriller in the style of the great masters of the genre – Ian Fleming, Len Deighton and Jack Higgins.

It is the first sequel to Andrew Cartmel’s roller-coaster thriller Operation Herod, which has been widely praised.

“With a luckless spy and a formidable femme fatale, Operation Herod is a bright and fast-moving entertainment of double lives and double-dealing. The spirit of the 60s espionage thriller takes on new life and vigour in the hands of Andrew Cartmel.” – Stephen Gallagher.

”Cartmel’s writing is a Heckler & Koch automatic wrapped in expensive lingerie. Brutal, exciting, engaging and witty. In the words of a woman who knew her spies: ‘Nobody does it better, makes me feel sad for the rest.” – Guy Adams, best-selling author of The Change.

The Surest Poison (Sid Chance Mysteries)

Three seemingly unrelated murders crop up during the investigation of a decade-old chemical dump that plagues a rural community west of Nashville. PI Sid Chance, former National Parks ranger and small town police chief, takes the case and finds himself caught up in a whirlwind of lies, deceptions, and threats. Who is tailing and warning him to back off? Is the man responsible for the pollution dead or alive? When ex-cop friend Jaz LeMieux offers her help, she is awakened by an explosion behind her mansion. Is it related to the abduction of her employees’ grandson, or Sid’s case? As the tension mounts, Sid finds himself confronting the unsavory people responsible for his past troubles.

A Mystery Magazine Editor’s View

“Chester Campbell’s latest, THE SUREST POISON, introduces a new character, PI Sid Chance and his side kick Jaz LeMieux…Chance is a great character, 59 years old, Viet Nam vet, ex cop and relentless. Campbell’s work here is his best yet and the book has a natural rhythm that moves the story along at a nice pace. The people who populate the book are realistic and nothing feels forced, it’s as if Campbell is just telling their story without embellishing, which I found refreshing. A top rate mystery by a gem of a writer.”

Psycho-Gehenna (MIND-HELL)

Psycho-Gehenna (MIND-HELL)

by Brian M.W.

Mitch K. Dorn is a truly gifted young man who will endure a horrific experience involving aliens, demons, and a prophetic realization of man’s destiny….

Remember the song by Joan Osborne, “What if God was one of us?” Well, how about another scenario: What if we were one of God? What if the face that God had given to us today was not the final form of man, and we would not truly mirror the face of God until after a million millennia of what scientists choose to call evolution.
This book explores another possibility about man’s destiny while centering itself around three popular genres: Horror, Mystery, and Science-Fiction. Three genres are combined in order to come up with a new style of fiction writing. The protagonists gain special abilities (too soon) which gives them advantages over other humans as they struggle with the fact that they are the next step in humanity’s evolution. They say that Jesus Christ walked on water … well, don’t you believe that if you could use 100% of your brain that you could walk on water, too? Or maybe you could fly! These young individuals gain access to extroidinary powers, and then they realize the horror of a being that is bent on using one of them to free itself from an Alien prison that was sent to Earth. Their only hope is to band together to defeat this foe while they desperately struggle to understand the mystery of its existence. The evolution of man is witnessed as these teens gain powers beyond imagination while trying to survive a horrific, mystery, science-fiction, thriller … Superhero evolved … Genre transcended … These people don’t get superpowers from mutant genes or a freak lab accident. They (YOU) were born with it. Most people only use 10% of their brain because if God allowed them to use their full potential before they evolved, they would destroy themselves. Find out what would happen if human potential was completely unlocked. Discover what YOU could do if circumstances in your life pushed you to the limit. God really did have a plan for us, and Adam and Eve was not His first attempt at creating man. God made ONE mistake … and there is a reason why the Bible depicts everything from the creation of the Earth to its end, but it doesn’t mention the dinosaurs. Some things had to be edited out … to protect us!

REVIEWS:

Owen Quinn
scary, thought provoking drama that gets inside your head and makes you think. Commendable.

Teric Darken
I commend you on your novel, Psycho-Gehenna! Your novel is professionally formatted, and the dialogue you incorporate enhances the story’s plausibility. You also have a knack for painting vivid imagery into the storyline! The reader can tell-through expletives-that Susan is not happy about being pregnant, nor of how far away the drive to the hospital is. One can also sense that Jonathan loves his wife and children, and will go through great lengths to please them. The vision Jonathan has in the car is eerie and mysterious! The reader yearns to discover what will ensue following the cryptic visitor. “The end is only the beginning.” Yes, indeed!

K.Z. Freeman
I myself quite like to be thrown in the story so I enjoyed this, even though I found some things odd. I think MIND-HELL or MIND HELL would be a better title by itself. I wont coment on this being scary since I rarely get “scared” by a book but the scenes that were supposed to do that were fucking great, really thrilling. Good show sir

lizjrnm
This is truly a unique way of presenting a sci-fi/thriller premise. I have been drawn to the first few chapters and I am compelled to come back!

Burgio
The pitch for this story made me think it was going to be a very difficult read. Instead, it’s an interesting and intriguing story. You might think of changing the pitch to make the story clearer, altho it was so different, it made me open this, so maybe not. What works, works.

The Key to Everything

The Key to Everything

by Alex Kimmell

Cracked and weathered binding, hiding mysteries on pages tied closed by a bloodstained string. A happy young family enchanted by dreams and possibilities. A barren, empty room. A boy with no friends obsessively drawing angles, edges and diagrams.

In his debut novel, Alex Kimmell captures a vivid and startling tale of fear. Auden’s journey begins when he discovers a curious leather-bound book whose contents will soon endanger his entire family. The pages of this book draw him into a prison that cannot be breached, a place that can only be unlocked with a very special key.

In The Key to Everything, fear is explored and heightened through jarring imagery and a terrifying, unique menace, ratcheting up the tension until the novel’s gripping climax.

A Temporary Sanity

A Temporary Sanity

by C. Y. Dillon

Marrying a psychological rapist will get your panties in a twist.

Karl Forsythe is a psychological rapist–a sociopathic personality who enjoys mind-effing women. He pretends to be a religious man with an affliction. His actions portray a calculating narcissist who admires serial rapists like Jeffrey Dahmer and Ted Bundy, and congratulates himself on finding a superior method of satisfying his sadistic compulsion.

This is the author’s second original screenplay, the first draft of which received an A grade in the 2007 UCLA Advanced Screenwriting Lab with Professor Richard Walter, and was the #1 favorite script in the Zoetrope Screenwriters Virtual Workshop in August, ranked 7-9 out of 10 for originality, character development, plot, dialogue and cinematic quality.

These characters and events are fictitious.  Although every writer draws from personal experience as well as that of those they know, embellishment is necessary for dramatic effect. The plot of this story was crafted based on two movies that captivated the writer in her youth: WAIT UNTIL DARK (1967, Audrey Hepburn, Alan Arkin), and THE GAME (1997, Michael Douglas, Sean Penn). In Wait Until Dark, the audience sees how extremely bad the villain is long before the protagonist recognizes that she is in mortal danger. The Game takes viewers on an emotional roller coaster with unexpected twists and an unexpected surprise at the end.

Taste of Blood: A Reese Mackenzie Novel

Taste of Blood: A Reese Mackenzie Novel

by Ginger Voight

Reese Mackenzie built a life around fantastic fabrication. As a top reporter at an international tabloid magazine, she made headlines with stories that involved mythical creatures in modern settings. Real life was often quite a scary place for Reese, who had battled her entire life against eerie premonitions that always managed to come true.

Things get a little too real when the photo of a dead girl right from her nightmares ends up on Reese’s desk. Instead Reese finagles her way all the way to Romania to investigate something a lot safer: a vampire.

However once Reese and her co-worker, Brody, hit Bucharest, she makes a disheartening discovery. Her psychic gift – or curse – kicks into overdrive, especially concerning the victims of a serial killer who fancies himself a vampire. Victims turn up completely drained of all their blood from puncture holes in the neck, in some gruesome encore performance of the Transylvania of lore.

Instead of limiting themselves strictly to her dreams, Reese’s premonitions begin to arrive via physical contact with future victims. While she tries to piece together her erratic psychic evidence, Romanian police, desperate to find their killer, zone in on her implausible connection to each of the victims.

It’s a pathway of clues that could lead her to the killer, or send her completely over the edge.

TASTE OF BLOOD is the psychological thriller from author Ginger Voight, whose genre-bending novels like MY IMMORTAL and DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS dig into the macabre to unearth suspense, romance and drama.

Day of the Dead (Quaid Hudson)

Day of the Dead (Quaid Hudson)

by Jonah Becker

Day of the Dead
Story number 3 in the Quaid Hudson series.

This is part of the series of stories featuring Quaid Hudson, the young cowboy and the enigmatic old desert shaman, Achai. Each book can be read as a separate story, but the stories sagas flow together into a single epic journey.

Following Achai, the shaman’s, disruption of their affairs, the leaders of the Mexican drug cartels are locked in a ruthless and bloody turf war. Some of the protagonists are offered the services of Wynono, a rival shaman. The true motivation of this mysterious desert dweller is to get close to Achai and to neutralise his influence for good. Wynono is the true patron of evil and crosses the Rio Grande in his quest to destroy young Quaid’s happiness and with it, Achai as well.

“Day of the Dead” is a modern American thriller, built on a plot with multiple parallel threads that climax in a showdown in the wilderness, where the lives of the young and innocent are used as pawns in a greater, ancient struggle.

“Day of the Dead” takes place in the days preceding that most important of Mexican festivals. A contemporary topic, the Mexican drug wars, set in a classic setting, out west on the Texas badlands. This is a unique take on a modern problem, the drug evil slithering across the Rio Grande. The plot and action in Day of the Dead are realistic and believable, but the power of timeless beliefs and superstitions is not ignored.

The complete sequence of Quaid Hudson adventures is “Curandero leon de montana”, “Vengeance of the Crossing”, “Day of the Dead”, “Love Triangle at Armorillion”, “Silverillion” and “Iron Shod”. Each story stands as a completed novel. The reader does not have to have read the prequel stories to enjoy any of the books in the series

PLEASE NOTE :- Readers of the previously released “Curandero Trilogy” will have read Stories 1, 2 and 3 in that collection – “Day of the Dead” being story number 3.

The Warlock

The Warlock

by Nicholas Boving

There is nothing as terrifying as horror on a bright sunny day. It is out of place. It is unimaginable. Evil is alive and well. Demons exist. I know, for I have seen them. I have fought them and they are very real.

I had taken a sabbatical at a monastery on a Greek island; and what had started as a holiday, a temporary retreat from the harsh realities of business life, to cleanse the poisonous detritus of city living from my soul, evolved into a nightmare I shall never forget, and I will never be the same again, for the impossible happened, and those things which normal, sane people take to be no more than fantasies, or at worst the sick imaginings of psychotic minds, actually occurred.

I was warned by the abbot, but it seemed so unlikely, the product of an overactive imagination that I didn’t take his warning seriously and half a dozen men and women; good, evil and plain misguided are dead because of it.

The entity, the frightful fiend that was loosed, was no delusion of a sick mind, but a monstrosity summoned from the depths of hell by a psychotic madman and black magician who has been taken into the darkness he sought to control; and if there is justice he will suffer for eternity.

Promise of Departure

Promise of Departure

by LW Montgomery

My dearest little Maggie,

I’m sorry in ways you may never understand. Please know that I never wanted to leave you….’

It wasn’t the traditional birthday letter Greg had written his daughter four times before. But traditions, like everything else, had utterly unraveled.

Lonely, depressed, and adrift in a society he no longer recognizes, Greg is rattled in unexpected ways by the heartbreak in Haiti that clear January morning when he spots an unusual opportunity in the looped nightly news; something he can do – a small way he just might be able to help.

Promise of Departure chronicles Greg’s reawakening as he wanders the broken Haitian countryside repairing motorcycles and shedding the self-centric values of a lucrative past, a ‘nomadic mechanic’ trying to string purposeful days together in a desperate attempt to save his own life. Maybe it’s a way through, or a way to rattle other things free. Maybe it’s just a way out. But at least it’s something different. Facing divorce and an anesthetized hereafter, Greg packs his motorcycle and ships off to a shattered country to do the one thing he still can.

In 1923, Dan O’Donovan, an Irish Free State soldier, was found dead in the notorious sinking sands at Mucknamore. Was he a victim of the ‘War of The Brothers’ that has been tearing this village apart ? Or lured to his death for other, more personal, reasons?

Now, in 1995, Jo Devereux has returned to Mucknamore from San Francisco, having fled the village twenty years before. Pregnant and troubled, Jo is determined to uncover the silence that surrounds her family history.

In excavating an astonishing story about her mother and grandmother, Jo comes to understand the price her people paid for freedom. And to know how this mysterious, tit-for-tat murder haunted three generations, devastated her own life and framed her choices. But what now for her and Rory?

But what now for her and Rory? Will her mission to uncover the past somehow redeem her future?

BEFORE THE FALL is a sweeping, multigenerational tale set in 1920s Ireland and 1980s San Francisco.  A novel about learning to integrate the drive for freedom with the need to belong.

String Bridge

String Bridge

by Jessica Bell

“Jessica Bell’s STRING BRIDGE strummed the fret of my veins,
thrummed my blood into a mad rush, played me taut until the final page, yet
with echoes still reverberating. A rhythmic debut with metrical tones of
heavied dark, fleeting prisms of light, and finally, a burst of joy–just as
with any good song, my hopeful heartbeat kept tempo with Bell’s narrative.”

~Kathryn Magendie, author of
Sweetie, Tender Graces and Secret Graces,Publishing Editor of
Rose & Thorn Journal

“Poet and musician Jessica Bell’s debut novel String
Bridge is a rich exploration of desire, guilt, and the difficult balancing
act of the modern woman. The writing is lyrical throughout, seamlessly
integrating setting, character and plot in a musical structure that allows the
reader to identify with Melody’s growing insecurity as her world begins to
unravel … String Bridge is a powerful debut from a promising writer,
full of music, metaphor, and just a hint of magic.”

~Magdalena Ball, author of
Repulsion Thrust and Sleep Before Evening

“The last novel that moved me and engaged me to this extent
was Prince of Tidesby Pat Conroy. Like Conroy, Jessica Bell is a brilliant writer of great skill and
depth. She doesn’t pull back from the difficult scenes, from conflict, pain,
intensity. She puts it all out there, no holds barred, no holding back. She
knows how to craft a scene, how to develop character, how to create suspense.
This is an absolutely brilliant debut novel. I look forward to reading her next
novel, and next and next.”

~Karen Jones Gowen, author of Farm Girl, Uncut Diamonds and House
of Diamonds

Invisible Architecture

Invisible Architecture

by Steven Kelly

With extraordinary confidence, Steven Kelly takes a city famed for its wealth, revered for its arts and proud of its beauty and exposes its deepest insecurities. The city is Vienna – still fragile and fragmented after the trauma of its past – and what he unravels are fear, anger and romantic escapism in numerous guises. Above all this is a book about art: the art of living, the art of politics and, just as importantly, the politics of art.

It is a Ritual

A genteel Viennese prepares a dinner party for a select group of friends. He approaches the occasion with the diligence of an artist but, as the evening progresses, cracks appear in his canvas and in a moment’s brutal exposure he is shown to be more puppet than puppeteer.

Breakfast was Simple

A group of friends find their romantic assumptions challenged when an Irish expatriate invades their lives and, on a visit to the zoo, the violence of history and exile is disturbingly revealed.

There were Rules

A lost painting by the Viennese master Egon Schiele is the focus for a story of artistic obsession and disturbing historical precedent in a world where the desire to create can quickly become an urge to destroy…

‘Three brilliant and disturbing tales of Vienna… these extravagant stories of love and death are told in the quietest, most economical manner.’ – Penelope Fitzgerald, London Evening Standard

‘The attempt to impose an artistic order on life is a striking theme… this book has an impressive depth which is not at all concealed by a polished prose.’ – The London Independent

‘This book kept me awake at night. It is haunting, with an emphasis on grotesque detail, as the gloss of nice living is wiped away to reveal the dark past, the Nazi heritage.’ – The Glasgow List

‘The prose is sharp and yet flowing, the narrative clean. Kelly builds tension through a story and yet the end appears natural and inevitable. Mystery and ritual are a heady mixture, but it’s a mixture of which he’s a master.’ – The Irish Press

‘Kelly’s writing is powerful and intelligent. His ideas are sophisticated but surface with considerable ease. Most memorable is his voice… It has a disarming coolness, an unnerving succinctness, which ensures you sit up and listen. This is an author well worth listening out for in the future.’ – Writers’ Monthly

Circuits of the Wind: A Legend of the Net Age (Volume 3)

Circuits of the Wind: A Legend of the Net Age (Volume 3)

by Michael Stutz

THE LYRIC STORY OF THE NET GENERATIONâ??GROWING UP AND COMING OF AGE ON THE INTERNET

The Internet is everywhere now, but Ray Valentine saw it first explode.

CIRCUITS OF THE WIND is the story of Ray’s quest to find himself as he grows up wandering the computer undergroundâ??the wild, global outback that existed before the net went mainstream. How else does an end-of-century slacker reach out to the world from Sohola, that northern state that’s a little more Midwest than it is New England? The net holds the key to what he’s afterâ??but even as he pioneers this virtual world, the veneer of his real life begins to crack.

In VOLUME THREE of the CIRCUITS OF THE WIND trilogy, Ray gets a data entry job with an outbound line just so he can live constantly, and secretly, on the netâ??and after he succeeds in business without really trying, he finds even more excitement and success as an online correspondent in the booming Web of the dot-com Nineties. He’s living on the net, feeding off the very pulse of it, but it’s still not what he’s afterâ??his entire life of wandering online seems to be a total waste. Or is it?

Three Times Time

Three Times Time

by Jack Matthews

One of America’s foremost short story writers has made available 3 of his most intriguing stories for a new promotional ebook. These 3 stories (first published in the 1980s) were chosen because they are accessible, intricately written and provocative on many levels. Also included is a long interview with the author about the craft of storytelling. Total: 23,000 words.

87 year old Jack Matthews has published hundreds of short stories, 7 novels and 8 volumes of literary essays. This ebook republishes three of Jack Matthews’ best stories. “Amos Smith, the Gunsmith” reaches into the folk tale tradition to produce a nice allegory about human labor. “A Woman of Properties” is a satirical suburban tale (reminiscent of Flannery O’Connor or Cheever) about a real estate agent with a grudge. “The Girl at the Window” is an unsettling and mysterious tale about our relationship to the past.

This short promotional ebook is intended to introduce new readers to the fiction of Jack Matthews. Personville Press is dedicated to publishing and republishing several low-cost editions of Jack Matthews novels and short stories in ebook format.

During his career as a writer, Mr. Matthews was distinguished professor of Fiction Writing at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio for over 4 decades. Winner of Guggenheim and several arts grants, Matthews has been anthologized widely, translated into several languages and nominated for a National Book Award. His own books have been praised by Eudora Welty, Anthony Burgess, Shirley Ann Grau, Tim O’Brien, Doris Grumbach, Walker Percy and a host of other famous and highly accomplished authors.

“Mr. Matthews is a master of prose conversation and deadpan charm. He is ironic, cool, and shrewd, and he writes a lucid prose.” (Tim O’Brien, New York Times)

“Matthews’ always graceful prose finds that precise telling detail. It’s easy to fall in love with such writing.” (Perry Glasser, North American Review)

“Engaging wit and irony have been characteristic of Matthews’s writing from the start, and both are strongly present in his latest gatherings of stories. His irony is increasingly darker, however, and his characters’ obsession with memory and its distortions plays a more dominant role in this later work, much of which deals with death. For the most part, these are stories with deceptively simple and ordinary surfaces, but they are driven by powerful and ominous undercurrents, which often fuse the local and regional with the archetypal. Few can do it better. Without question, Matthews has established himself as one of America’s finest storytellers.” (Stanley Lindberg, editor, Georgia Review)

The Zombie Wilson Diaries

The Zombie Wilson Diaries

by Timothy W. Long

“One of the best zombie novels of the year!”

— Barnes and Noble

Long, a prolific horror author, writes with graphic
glee
– repulsive details and way off-color jokes abound. If this were a movie,
it would be rated R for revolting but it’s revolting in a cheerful kind of
way.”

— Barbara McMichael, Tacoma News Tribune

Zombie Wilson is the most fun you’ll ever have with
a corpse in a coconut bra
… and that’s saying something.”

  horrornews.net,
Horror News

On the whole, I’d call this one a triumph. It’s
quirky, fast paced, and good to the last withered drop.”

— Scott A. Johnson, dreadcentral.com

Something different for lovers of zombie fiction. A
fast-paced, darkly comic tale with a hint–maybe more than a hint–of
madness.”

— David Dunwoody, author of EMPIRE

“A dog-rough zomedy that’ll have you laughing your
(undead) ass off from start to finish. Daniel Defoe fans beware!

–Wayne Simmons, author of Drop Dead Gorgeous

“Timothy Long’s Zombie Wilson Diaries is an
addictive, engaging, funny, gross, no-holds-barred story of a castaway and the
zombie girl he can’t live without. Don’t even hesitate to buy this one!

— Stephen A. North, author of Dead Tide

After reading it cover to cover I fell in love with
the story
, so the five stars were well earned. I highly recommend this to
anyone who is looking for something a little bit different to add to their
zombie repertoire.”

— Tonia Brown, author of Lucky Stiff

The Apocalypse and Satan's Glory Hole! (1)

The Apocalypse and Satan’s Glory Hole! (1)

by Jonathan Moon

Recipe for the apocalypse:

* Four parts Horsemen of the Apocalypse
* Three drops of bathtub LSD
* A handful of sexual perverts
* Garnish with a bunch of really hot pissed-off militant lesbians
* Add a splash of savior approved Red Bull Shake or stir, just don’t upset junk-monkey Phil in the process.

Serve to the demons that are currently invading the Earth. You think you know how the world ends? You don’t know shit!

Armageddon arrived on a weekday, which was really inconvenient for a lot of people, including The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. After their appearance on The Kayla Mangrabler talk show, they decided to go their separate ways and cause as much havoc as possible.

Jesus has been stuck at the craps table for three days, sipping vodka and Red Bull, completely missing the end of the world. But he is about to meet up with Death and go on a road trip that will test their resolve and their blood alcohol content.

Meanwhile, an unlikely band of heroes are headed to Las Vegas to fight the Apocalypse. Creepy Chuzz and his one-armed, addict monkey Phil are flying there in an ice cream truck. Chuzz’s best friend Leon plans to lend a hand, assuming he can escape the clutches of the insane Father Maniwhore not to mention Pestilence, who has designs on the janitor’s bathtub-LSD-addled brain.

Along the way they will encounter bouncing glory hole boxes, militant lesbians, an undead general, a flying demon named Princess Sally, hordes of zombies, and a trio of secret agents hellbent on delivering a Cease and Desist order to Lucifer himself.

They’d better hurry, because the Devil is rising in the desert, and he is hungry to start the Apocalypse that his son could not. But only if he can get it on with his giant floating glory hole.

Then those Creationism folks started making their case and I just couldn’t take the confusion any more. After much prayer and an impending deadline, I think I may have found an answer we can all live with. If not, just keep in mind, it’s not like I’m an expert or anything.

TORN & RESTORED CARD TRICK (Magic Card Tricks)

by Johnnie Gentle

This is another Amazing Classic of Magic that professional magicians perform regularly, which I’m sure you’ll have seen at magic shows and on the television. However, it is a very easy routine to do and this book explains exactly how you can do it, in Step-by-Step illustrated instructions.

Imagine having a Freely Chosen Card TORN into pieces, with one of the small pieces being kept for verification by the audience member who chose the card. The remainder of the torn pieces are miraclulously VANISHED, which in itself as a nice bit of real magic.

However, the real Amazing, Mind-Blowing Magic is the magical way the card is reproduced and in the spectators’s hands it is seen to be FULLY RESTORED, with the exception of the little piece that was retained by the spectator and which matches exactly to the Restored Card.
This is a Must for all who love performing card tricks and who really want to build a magical reputation.

Tastes Like Human: The Shark Guys' Book of Bitingly Funny Lists

Tastes Like Human: The Shark Guys’ Book of Bitingly Funny Lists

by Christopher Lombardo

Humor writers Noel Boivin and Chris Lombardo follow up their definitive compendium of drunken feats, The Man Who Scared a Shark to Death (Penguin, 2007), with Tastes Like Human: The Shark Guys’ Book of Bitingly Funny Lists.

Here the authors, who one reviewer of their first book called “fast and funny with the facts, without the morality”, present a completely new and unapologetically irreverent take on the list book genre.

Tastes Like Human answers questions people didn’t even know they wanted answers to like: Who are the Top Horniest Cult Leaders of All Time? What are the Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Return Things? Which incidents qualify as the Top Acts of Karaoke-Related Violence?

All of that and much more, including etiquette tips on matters as diverse as how to use an ATM machine without seeming like a complete prick, a guide to conduct when meeting Queen Elizabeth, and fighting suggestions the next time your mouth makes an online payment for which there are insufficient funds in your credit account (ass, in keeping with the analogy) to pay for.

Chris and Noel, AKA, “The Shark Guys” are the creators of the popular humor site TheSharkGuys. Links from their site have appeared on dozens of popular websites including Mental Floss, Sports Illustrated, Cracked, IMDb, and FARK.

Reviews of their first book:

“[An] entertaining compendium of tales of drunken exploits — all documented truths, but reading somewhat like urban myths.” –The Globe and Mail

“‘… A brilliant tome dedicated to some of the best true stories of drunken debauchery ever.” –KISW Seattle Online

“Lifelong sobriety certainly isn’t a bad thing, but being a prude is, and it may prevent you from enjoying The Man Who Scared a Shark to Death and Other Tales of Drunken Debauchery.” –The Calgary Herald

“… [A] hilarious (and at times painfully familiar) new book.”, –Scene Magazine

CLUMP - An American Splatire

CLUMP – An American Splatire

by S. Redman White

Clump is a man with no known name, no known past and, most importantly, no head. The huge, heavily muscled giant lacks any awareness of the world around him, but miraculously becomes the most popular entertainer in America. Clump’s medical and media handlers must manage his skyrocketing career as a music video star and create a wholesome, family-friendly public image…while concealing the inconvenient fact that the headless man is homicidally dangerous when touched. A so-called “splatire” owing to the mix of razor-sharp comedy and graphic violence, CLUMP’s satiric targets include the entertainment industry, medicine, journalism, corporate greed and ineptitude, politics, and a morally vacuous culture that increasingly and enthusiastically embraces the brainless. Stylistically, CLUMP reads like a head-on collision between Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. and Chuck Palahniuk. It is not for the faint-hearted, the thin-skinned, or the unadventurous but is an all-you-can stomach buffet for those who like their comedy dark and their social commentary barbed.

Personality Disorders, and Maureen (A Pair of Shorts)

Personality Disorders, and Maureen (A Pair of Shorts)

by Heath Buckmaster

A Pair of Shorts, by Heath L. Buckmaster – featuring two short stories from the collection, plus a bonus holiday story (just for fun).

In Volume Two we present: Personality Disorders, and Maureen.

Personality Disorders: It began as an exploration into my seemingly crazy behaviour. Was there a reason for it? Could it be explained scientifically? Was there a connection between my obsession, my compulsion, my addictions, and my attempts at functioning as a normal human being during the day? This exploration took me into the wonderful world of books – because I am incredibly well bred. But the books only confirmed that I was not alone in my madness. And so I began to document some of my own patterns to see if I could get just a glimpse of the meaning behind them. And in the end I discovered that yes, I am bat sh*t crazy.

Maureen: “Maureen, don’t go. I need you.” They were the last six words Maureen Jones heard before her eyelids fluttered and closed for the last time – her final breath slipping silently into the vastness of the private room on the top floor of St. Josephine of the Sacred Shrine hospital. Angry tears poured from Tom’s bitter eyes and splashed onto the starch-white sheet that had been changed only minutes before. Now the sheets were dark grey – soaked in melancholy and morose tears from Tom, the man who waited.

Silent Kay and the Night Before Christmas (bonus story): The night before Christmas was a long, long time ago. This fact is rarely disputed even thousands of years later, despite nights being eves and having their own associated celebrations. But this is not a tale of eves and nights – it’s a tale of a child, more powerful that she could have ever realized. And so in that time of nights and Christmases there lived a young and precocious girl named Kay. She hardly ever spoke – her shyness so profound as to confuse and confound those who so desperately wanted to talk to her. So they called her Silent Kay (at least, the exceedingly naughty boys who insisted on pulling her hair after school called her that)…

Decisive Moments of World War II: The Battle of Britain, Pearl Harbor, D-Day and the Manhattan Project

*Includes pictures of important people, places, and events.
*Includes an original introduction for each decisive moment.
*Includes bibliographies for further reading.
*Explains what went right and what went wrong for the combatants at Pearl Harbor, D-Day and the Battle of Britain.

During World War II, the free world literally hung in the balance, with the Axis and Allies engaging in warfare on an unprecedented scale. Though the ultimate result is now known, in 1940 it looked very much like the Axis might win the war and usher in a new world order.

It took several important decisive moments to help turn the war. The Battle of Britain, fought throughout the summer and early autumn of 1940, was unquestionably epic in scope. The largest air campaign in history at the time, the vaunted Nazi Luftwaffe sought to smash the RAF as a prelude to German invasion, leaving the British public and its pilots engaged in what they believed was a desperate fight for national survival. That’s what it looked like to the rest of the world too, as free men everywhere held their breaths. Could these pilots, many not yet old enough to shave, avoid the fate of Poland and France? The fate of the free world, at least as Europe knew it, hung in the balance over the skies of Britain during those tense months.

All Americans are familiar with the “day that will live in infamy.” At 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor, the advanced base of the United States Navy’s Pacific Fleet, was ablaze. It had been smashed by aircraft launched by the carriers of the Imperial Japanese Navy. All eight battleships had been sunk or badly damaged, 350 aircraft had been knocked out, and over 2,000 Americans lay dead. Pearl Harbor was unquestionably one of the seminal events in American history, and given the nature of the surprise attack, the entry of the U.S. into the war, and the lingering controversies and conspiracy theories, the attack on Pearl Harbor continues to be a highly charged and heavily debated event.

On June 6, 1944, a date that will forever be known as D-Day, the Allies commenced the liberation of Europe by staging the largest and most complex amphibious invasion in human history. The complex operation would require tightly coordinated naval and air bombardment, paratroopers, and even inflatable tanks that would be able to fire on fortifications from the coastline, all while landing over 150,000 men across nearly 70 miles of French beaches. Given the incredibly complex plan, it’s no surprise that General Eisenhower had already written a letter apologizing for the failure of the invasion, which he carried in his coat pocket throughout the day.

While the War raged in Europe and the Pacific, a dream team of Nobel Laureates was working on a project so secretive that vice president Harry Truman didn’t know of it when he took the presidency after FDR’s death. This secretive project, The Manhattan Project, would ultimately yield the “Little Boy” and “Fat Man” bombs that released more than 100 Terajoules of energy at Hiroshima and Nagaski; changing the course of the War and the course of civilization.

Decisive Moments of World War II covers the strategic situation and the logistics that went into the planning for the Battle of Britain, Pearl Harbor and D-Day, as well as examining the course and collaboration of the Allies on the Manhattan Project. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about these key turning points like you never have before.

The World's Greatest Cities: The History of New York City

The World’s Greatest Cities: The History of New York City

by Charles River Editors

*Includes pictures of important people, places, and events in New York City’s history.
*Chronicles the history of New York City from the Native Americans to now.
*Profiles the different people, places, and attractions of the Big Apple.
*Looks at how New Yorkers have historically lived, worked, and played over the centuries.
*Highlights some of the city’s hidden gems and their stories, like Cleopatra’s Needle.

“I would give the greatest sunset in the world for one sight of New York’s skyline. The shapes and the thought that made them. The sky over New York and the will of man made visible… Let them come to New York, stand on the shore of the Hudson, look and kneel. When I see the city from my window – no, I don’t feel how small I am – but I feel that if a war came to threaten this, I would like to throw myself into space, over the city, and protect these buildings with my body.” – Ayn Rand, The Fountainhead

Of all the great cities in the world, few personify their country like New York City. As America’s largest city and best known immigration gateway into the country, NYC represents the beauty, diversity and sheer strength of the United States, a global financial center that has enticed people chasing the “American Dream” for centuries.

America’s prototypical metropolis was once a serene landscape in which Native American tribes farmed and fished, but when European settlers arrived its location on the Eastern seaboard sparked a rapid transformation. Given its history of rapid change, it is ironic that the city’s inhabitants often complain about the city’s changing and yearn for things to stay the same. The website EV Grieve, whose name plays on the idea that the East Village “grieves” for the history and character the neighborhood loses every day to market forces and gentrification, regularly features a photo of some site, usually of little interest: an abandoned store, a small bodega, a vacant lot. The caption says, simply, that this is what the site looked like on a given day. The editors of the website are determined to document everything and anything for future generations.

That is hardly a modern phenomenon. New Yorkers have always grieved over the city’s continuous upheavals and ever-increasing size and complexity. By the 1820s, Wall Street had lost whatever charm it might have had; former residents complained that two-story houses had given way to intimidating five-story office buildings. The New York Commercial Advertiser noted in 1825 that “Greenwich is no longer a country village,” but rather an up-and-coming neighborhood. Today, it’s hard to find a history of New York City that doesn’t refer to Henry James’s famous 1908 story The Jolly Corner, in which a man returns to New York after decades abroad only to be horrified by an unfamiliar hellscape of commercial growth. He finds his once-jolly childhood home nearly buried “among the dreadful multiplied numberings which seemed to him to reduce the whole place to some vast ledger-page, overgrown, fantastic, of ruled and criss-crossed lines and figures.” The once-beloved city has transformed itself into “the mere gross generalisation of wealth and force and success.” That childhood homeâ??an 1830s townhouseâ??in fact belonged to the James family on Washington Square in Greenwich Village. It was destroyed to make way for New York University, which is today embroiled in yet another real estate saga as it plans to expand once again.

The World’s Greatest Cities: The History of New York City chronicles the history of America’s largest city while also offering vignettes about the people, places, and culture of the Big Apple that will interest inhabitants and tourists alike. Along with pictures of important people and places, you will learn about New York City like you never have before, in no time at all.

The Greatest Battles in History: The Peloponnesian War

The Greatest Battles in History: The Peloponnesian War

by Charles River Editors

*Includes pictures depicting important people, places, and events.
*Includes Pericles’ famous Funeral Oration
*Includes a Bibliography for further reading.
*Includes a Table of Contents.

“Thucydides, an Athenian, wrote the history of the war between the Peloponnesians and the Athenians, beginning at the moment that it broke out, and believing that it would be a great war and more worthy of relation than any that had preceded it. This belief was not without its grounds…Indeed this was the greatest movement yet known in history, not only of the Hellenes, but of a large part of the barbarian worldâ??I had almost said of mankind.” – Thucydides, History of the Peloponnesian War

The Peloponnesian War, as the great historian Thucydides wrote in the introduction to his eponymous book, which has become one of the greatest historical treatises of antiquity, was an event of such calamitous magnitude that Greece had never witnessed its like in all of recorded history. Not the Trojan War, not the Dorian Invasion, not even the recent Persian invasions – which had devastated mainland Greece and seen Athens herself evacuated and put to the flame, the buildings on her Acropolis razed into dust – could compare to the scale of the devastation that engulfed all of Greece for almost three decades, causing the deaths of tens, perhaps hundreds of thousands.

Entire populations were displaced, whole cities destroyed, and mountainous sums of money spent, all in order for Greece’s two most famous city-states to establish who had dominion over Greece. Sparta, whose invincible armies had recently led the Greeks to victory against Xerxes’s hordes at Plataea was at the head of the Peloponnesian League. Their opponents were led by proud Athens, possessor of a fleet that virtually dominated the entire Mediterranean and decimated the Persian navy at Salamis and Mycale, at the head of the Delian League. Sparta was insular and old-fashioned, while Athens was dynamic and democratic, but both were bent on imperialistic expansion, and the two ancient rivals, at loggerheads for so long, eventually sucked every other major city-state in Greece into the war.

The Peloponnesian War would rage on a scale that was unimaginable to the Greeks, ranging from Italy to Asia Minor. By war’s end, nothing would be the same and nothing would be sacred. Even the Spartans, the proud vanquishers of the Persian hordes, whose king Leonidas and his Three Hundred had died to the last man at Thermopylae to help preserve Greek freedom, were forced to go cap in hand to the Persian emperors and beg for money to continue the war. The war between Athens and Sparta was a war of nations, and it lasted so long that many who were alive and well at its beginning were dead of disease and old age – quite apart from the hazards of the battlefield – by its finish.

The Greatest Battles in History: The Peloponnesian War comprehensively covers the history behind one of the most famous wars of antiquity, the men who led and fought in the war, and the war’s lasting legacy. Along with a bibliography, maps, and pictures of important people and places, you will learn about the Peloponnesian War like you never have before.

Prince of Pleasure: The Prince of Wales and the Making of the Regency

Prince of Pleasure: The Prince of Wales and the Making of the Regency

by Saul David

Described by the Duke of Wellington as ‘the most extraordinary compound of talent, wit, buffoonery, obstinacy and good feeling that I ever saw in one character in my life’, George Augustus Frederick, Prince of Wales, later George IV, was a highly controversial figure. He courted both Whigs and Tories in his attempts to establish the Regency during the ‘madness’ of his father, George III. Scandalous liaisons with prostitutes and duchesses, and his ‘secret’ marriage to the Catholic Mrs Fitzherbert, tested his duty – to nation and to family. Yet his support for overseas campaigns against Napoleon, culminating in such historic victories as Trafalgar and Waterloo, consolidated Britain’s status as the pre-eminent world power amid the great social and economic upheavals of the Industrial Revolution. Drawing on a wealth of original accounts of life in Georgian Britain, Saul David has created a masterly portrait – of a flamboyant, opportunistic and influential figure, and of a nation in a time of great change.

Saul David is Professor of War Studies at the University of Buckingham and the author of several critically-acclaimed history books, including The Indian Mutiny: 1857 (shortlisted for the Westminster Medal for Military Literature), Zulu: The Heroism and Tragedy of the Zulu War of 1879 (a Waterstone’s Military History Book of the Year) and, most recently, Victoria’s Wars: The Rise of Empire.

Saul David also writes acclaimed historical fiction. Zulu Hart, the first in the George Hart series, was a bestseller in 2009, and the sequel, Hart of Empire, will be published in August 2010.

An experienced broadcaster, Saul David has presented and appeared in history programmes for all the major TV channels and is a regular contributor to Radio 4.

Praise for Saul’s books:

‘Filled with swashbuckling derring-do, the reek of blood and gunpowder, combined with shrewd analysis of power, war and psychology’ (Simon Sebag Montefiore on ALL THE KINGS MEN)

‘Those wishing to immerse themselves in this golden age of British military success will relish David’s fine piece of history’ (Sunday Times on ALL THE KINGS MEN )

‘A first-rate historian, now a masterly story-teller’ (Bernard Cornwell on ZULU HART )

‘David is a popular historian with a rare talent . . . An unashamed crowd-pleaser with a compelling, sexy hero who could give Cornwell’s Sharpe a run for his money.’ (The Times on ZULU HART )

How effective were poor law reforms and philanthropy in reducing the causes of poverty in Britain during the 19th Century?

How effective were poor law reforms and philanthropy in reducing the causes of poverty in Britain during the 19th Century?

by Tony Franks-Buckley

Britain faced increased poverty during the 19th Century when it was experiencing an Industrial Revolution. This article will discuss how reforms in the poor law and philanthropy attempted to reduce the causes of poverty.

The Poor Law Amendment Act 1834, sometimes abbreviated to PLAA, was an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom passed by the Whig government of Lord Melbourne that reformed the country’s poverty relief system (with the exception of Scotland, which reformed their poor law in 1845). It was an Amendment Act that completely replaced earlier legislation based on the Poor Law of 1601. With reference to this earlier Act the 1834 Act is also known as the New Poor Law.

The Amendment Act was called for after an investigation by the 1832 Royal Commission into the Operation of the Poor Laws which included Edwin Chadwick, George Nicholls, John Bird Sumner and Nassau William Senior. The Act has been described as “the classic example of the fundamental Whig-Benthamite reforming legislation of the period”, based on three main doctrines: Malthus’s principle that population increased faster rather than resources unless checked, Ricardo’s “iron law of wages” and Bentham’s doctrine that people did what was pleasant, and would tend to claim relief rather than working.

The Amendment Act came two years after the 1832 Reform Act had extended the franchise to the middle-classes. Some historians have argued that this was a major factor in the PLAA being passed.
