The One Hundred

by Zia Ahmad

The Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award quarterfinalist, this timely debut novel, based on a true story, is exhilarating and emotionally gripping. A tale of rage and betrayal, where friendship and loyalty overcome incredible odds, takes the readers deep into the historical streets of Lahore, Pakistan.

This is a remarkable, heartbreaking story of a chance encounter between three runaway children, their resolve to survive on their own, and the communal bond they create to fight a common enemy. It is about enduring social injustice, facing the dangers lurking in the streets, hoping to find love even in the harshest of circumstances, and perseverance for survival.

One of the few Pakistan novels to be written in English, The One Hundred tells a profound story of friendship, family, and love against the background of a true event that has not been told in fiction before. But just as it is simplistic in its narration, its dark and complicated characters depict a modern day story in a most realistic setting. As intense as it is affectionate, The One Hundred is truly a compelling debut.

Wow!!! Great work. I felt much empathy for both boys. Additionally, the location, so foreign to Americans, is fascinating, exotic.
Excellent. I bought in from the very beginning to the two boys. I wanted to know what was going to happen to them and what happened in the prologue. I could feel the tempo in his writing style that evokes the Pakistani language cadence. The English was perfect but it had that lilt unique to that region of the world. Would love to read this book. 5 stars all the way.

I was impressed with the author’s mastery of the slow pace working through here; this is not boring writing at all, but it knows what it’s doing and how it’s going to do it, and it demands the reader slow down and reflect on what’s going on. It’s also one of those books that makes me go look stuff up on Google Maps, and I like that a great deal, though I may be in the minority on that.
This is good stuff indeed, well-written and deliberate without being boring.

The Nonlationship

by Colleen Jordan

Ellis has dated them all: straight women, gay men, herds of the emotionally unavailable. She finds herself in therapy amidst a quarter life crisis, after spending years in unfulfilling relationships with both men and women. Together with her therapist Phil, she recounts her romantic history uncovering a pattern of attracting exciting but rejecting partners. Whether they are men who fear intimacy, closeted lesbians, or people currently in other relationships, Ellis unfailingly falls for the wrong person. Phil opens Ellis to the possibility that her suffering comes from reenacting something called the repetition compulsion, a psychological phenomena that defines the moment a moth is drawn to a flame. Fighting against her negative dating pattern and her poor body image, Ellis is not sure if she has the strength to give up her attraction to romantic poison even with Phil’s support.

A Song for Nemesis

by Len Harper

With an unfinished screenplay still sitting in London, and an impatient producer on his back, Enrique returns to the city that took his lover’s life. Here, he redrafts the script, which in essence threatens to lift the lid off a deception that runs to the core of civilization, a totalitarian nightmare devised by a power as brutal as it is invisible.

Before long, with Senica set to arrive in the UK on a doctored passport, Enrique finds himself terrorized by a gunman, whose client’s chilling ploy to first unnerve and then to eliminate the film director puts at risk the entire production. Betrayal, and a remarkable act of valour from an unlikely source ensue. For the gunman, to disappoint his anonymous and apparently wealthy client is not an option, as he receives his final instructions and closes in on his quarry for the final kill.

by Obama Christ

When he was thirteen years old he became a man

Upcoming author Obama Christ’s ten part epic of a child made to fend for himself are both articulate and thought provoking. Avoiding common stereotypes made in street literature, he opts to write real people who speak to oppression and breath life onto the page.

Caesar Augustus Freeman is a child born in the ghetto with little opportunity other than superior intelligence and a sixth sense about human nature. His mother is both mentally and emotionally abusive, his environment is poor and physically confining, and the school system is failing him.

In an unexpected twist of fate, Caesar is left alone on the streets to fend for himself under the tutelage of criminals. With the guidance of Andre Cole, a hustler with an affinity for black power and doing for self, he learns not only the ways of the block, but how to become a man.

Caesar is blessed with a high IQ and photographic memory, which leads to him being both class valedictorian and number one hustler on the streets simultaneously. As he approaches eighteen with a pocket full of money, he is forced to choose between being kingpin of the block and walking in a different direction. The choice will not only change his life, but rock the core of his community.

If you have ever stood with your back against the wall and were uncertain how you were going to make it you will love Hard Knock Life. If you are an underdog trying to rise above adversity, Hard Knock Life is the book for you. If you have ever been in dysfunctional relationships, lived in a depressed environment, or just love a good story, Hard Knock Life will not disappoint.

Imagine Boyz in the Hood, Paid in Full, Scarface, The Wire or Menace II Society come to life as an ongoing series for the page. Hard Knock Life is just as cinematic as it is heavy on words. The cover art by New York’s Marty O’ Neil is also exceptional.

Newcomer Obama Christ is not only unique in name but in paragraphs written. Hard Knock Life is only available on kindle and well worth the dollar it takes to download. Invest in Obama Christ. Obama Christ is the future.

Somewhere West of Roads

by A. E. Poynor

On the same day John Barstow lost his girlfriend and his job, he got a letter from a lawyer in Anchorage, Alaska, summoning him to that frozen place. John doesn’t really care that his uncle, Hank Grant, has died. He didn’t really know the man. Hank had been the black sheep of the family, spending his life in remote reaches of Alaska, far from his Southern California family. The letter must be nothing more than a legal formality. Still, the letter is intriguing, particularly when a check for two-thousand bucks falls out of it. Broke and out of work, John quickly decides he has nothing to lose by making the trip.

In Anchorage, John learns that as Hank Grant’s only legal heir he must make a decision: sign onto an agreement to take over his uncle’s business, or walk away with a trailer house and twenty-five grand.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, John is sure a trailer house in Nikiski, Alaska, is no temptation. The business? Well, it’s also out of a city boy’s comfort zone. Last Chance Adventures is a pay-to-mine tourist operation on the west side of the Cook Inlet; fly in only, as remote as it gets.
There’s a catch, however. If John can’t make Last Chance Adventures show a profit in one season, it goes to a secondary, unnamed beneficiary. But hey, he’ll still get the trailer house!

Fortunately, there’s good news. John’s uncle had an assistant, Harley Pepperdine, who is knowledgeable, helpful and reliable – when he’s sober. His uncle also had plenty of other helpful friends – all of them quirky Alaskan characters shaped by the country John will have to survive. And too, there’s a woman, Maggie Peters, who is smart, attractive and friendly – whenever she’s not pissed at Harley and John.

Somewhere West of Roads is full of humor, with a touch of adventure and romance.

by BC Caudill

My son was having some trouble adjusting to his sister once she was old enough to walk. She would touch his things and move them. My son who is a high functioning Autustuc child would get very upset. He began blaming her for everything missing. Most of the times he had misplaced the toy himself. One day I sat down with him and we wrote a book together. He created character names and we developed a story on a missing action figure. The story was cute so I typed it for him. He was six years old at the time and my daughter was two.

I shelved the story for several years until now. The story teaches patience, friendship, drive for results and honesty. I hope you will read it to your child.
