One Man’s Golfing Life

by George Anthony Finn

How could a (reasonably) intelligent, fully-grown, adult, well-to-do, middle-aged male golfer possibly get himself involved in a wager for a massive amount of money (â??enough to buy a small house, or a good racehorse’) which he could not voluntarily lose, then proceed to lose it – and end up with it costing him nothing? Jammy Flaherty (â??he’d be pure evil if he wasn’t such an eejit’) could, and did, with some interesting consequences. Read on to find out more. This is my first novel and, although it is not very long (53K words in 21 chapters) it is beautifully formed. It is set, as usual, amongst the rolling sand dunes and pristine fairways of Lahinch, on the Atlantic coast of County Clare in the west of Ireland. Many of my usual (fictitious) characters turn up and the all-knowing, all-seeing (fictitious) Secretary/Manager is in sparkling form as he unwinds this tale of intrigue, drunkenness, s**, (there may be children in the house!) and gambling (on a massive scale) in this (formerly) idyllic Celtic village. He even gets personally involved on this occasion but so, unfortunately, does his beloved wife, with serious financial consequences for the poor, hard-working man who was, after all, only trying to put his insider knowledge to good use.
As yet, this book has won no awards, so I have nothing to boast about in that regard but I do hope that you enjoy this tale of further (fictious) goings-on in (the real) lovely Lahinch.

Three full-length sports history and trivia books from Black Mesa Publishing and author Tucker Elliot.

Cincinnati Reds IQ: The Ultimate Test of True Fandom

In 1968, Johnny Bench was a 20-year-old rookie embarking on his first full Major League season with the Cincinnati Reds. He was also the Reds starting catcher, an All-Star, and the National League Rookie of the Year. And he was one other thing as well: the foundation for one of the greatest teams ever assembled in Major League history – the Big Red Machine.

Bench’s Major League journey lasted 17 seasons – all in Cincinnati – and earned him a place in the Baseball Hall of Fame as one of the game’s greatest legends. But when talking about the legendary Reds teams of the 1970s, it was Bench who said, “The Big Red Machine teams will never be forgotten … They’ll be remembered because of the professionals they had, the character they had, the skill they had. Those teams were a symbol of what baseball really should be.”

The professionals included Tony Perez and Pete Rose, who were already on the club when Bench burst on the scene in 1968, and then one by one the rest of the pieces fell into place: manager Sparky Anderson (1970), followed by Dave Concepcion and George Foster (1971), Joe Morgan and Cesar Geronimo (1972), and Ken Griffey (1973). In 1975, with all the pieces firmly in place, the Reds were World Champions. In 1976, the Reds defended their title and became a dynasty.

This is a book of history and trivia that covers all eras of Reds baseball – but it is also a tribute to the legacy of Sparky Anderson and the professionals who made up the Big Red Machine.

Winter Sailing On Southern Puget Sound

by James Nugent

The Open Cockpit

Disclaimer: This is how I do it. It is not how you should do it. Using good discretion and common sense perhaps you can do it too.

In the year of 1989 I left the dock at least for a few minutes every day. My goal was to sail or boat every day for a year. I did it.

Sometimes it was grueling hot and uncomfortable. Sometimes it was wet. Sometimes it was dangerously windy or cold. Although I will mention techniques for surviving heat and sun. The main focus of this little book will be thriving in the winter in an open cockpit of a sail boat.

Some of the outings were more than memorable and some of my trips, where not. However I learned from each experience and I will share what I learned with you.
