Have you ever become so depressed that life seemed to be worthless? Has a feeling of intense anxiety ever gripped you to the point that you felt as if at any minute, your heart would explode? These are two examples of how our thoughts (in these cases, negative ones) can have a direct effect on ourselves and how we view the world around us. Fortunately, these thoughts can be also used to create beautiful and wonderful things. They can propel us into the stratosphere of success, help us find love and enable us to lead fulfilling and rewarding lives. Thoughts are as potent and transforming as physical touch.

It is rather unfortunate that very few actually appreciate this fact. They believe that since thoughts are intangible that they have little effect; in essence, these individuals live in the physical world alone. However, they are only seeing half of the “big picture”. Thoughts can give rise to new perspectives. Even the prospect of developing an open-minded point of view can elicit great changes in our lives. After all, the first step in solving a problem is becoming aware of its very existence. So, we can begin to appreciate the power of thought.

If we look back at many of the great personalities in history that have changed the world around them, the one aspect that each has in common with the other is an iron will and a recognition that powerful thoughts give rise to powerful results. Another word for this perspective that is often used but rarely understood is “willpower”. Through a sense of self and by adopting a stance that fosters willpower, great things can be accomplished. This is one of the immutable laws of nature.

While this may appear too good to be true, remember that like any great power, harnessing and controlling it will take a great deal of time and practice. Simply because we are able to realise the true power of our minds does not necessarily mean that we can change our entire perspectives overnight and become the person that we have always wanted to be.

So, appreciating the power that our thoughts can have in the world around us is critical in order to begin tapping this strength for our own purposes. Energy can neither be created nor destroyed and in the same way, we must actively seek to modify our thoughts; to harness their power so that we can achieve our wildest dreams.
