The Original Alibi, a Matt Kile Mystery

by David Bishop

Eleven years ago General Whittaker, long retired, former member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, bought an alibi for his grandson who had been arrested for the murder of his fiancée, Ileana Corrigan, and the general’s unborn great grandson. The charges were soon dropped and the grandson released. General Whittaker is now dying and he can no longer restrain his doubts. The question that has haunted him all these years must be answered. Did his money save his innocent grandson or cheat justice?

The general hires Matt Kile to thaw this cold case. The solution of the crime is complicated by the passage of years and an excess of suspects, including the general’s grandson, the general’s promiscuous adult daughter, and even the general himself. All had means, motive, and opportunity. The Original Alibi is a big story told on a small stage, intimately portrayed primarily among the members of the Whittaker family and those who serve them. Of the secrets and strategies that fester inside an outwardly functional and famous family.

Matt Kile is a former homicide detective, and pardoned ex-con who, like several real-life former cops, has gone on to achieve success as a writer of mystery fiction. Matt’s efforts are aided by a colorful cast of Damon Runyonesque characters. Chief among them is Axel, Matt’s former cellmate whose parole, after more than thirty years in prison, had been advanced by Matt’s promise of a job. He is also helped by Hillie, a young inexperienced streetwalker Axel takes under his wing. Then there’s Bruno Grunsky, a former mob wheelman, and retired spinster Clara Birnbaum who makes pies in return for Axel’s favors. This mixed bag of characters add flavoring to the story, while each, in their own way, help Matt Kile determine the guilt or innocence of General Whittaker’s grandson.

New Jersey’s Famous Turnpike Witch

by Brad Abruzzi

Simultaneous breakdowns (automotive and nervous) first landed Alice on the Jersey Turnpike, and a crippling panic disorder stuck her there. Stranded, broken, and living alone on the toll road, Alice took a turn for the theatrical. Her public gestures of snarky catharsis â?? mock-hangings from overpasses, “Operation Cheese Doodle” â?? won her critical acclaim and a cult following. Adoring fans swarmed to New Jersey, hoping to catch a glimpse of their Turnpike Witch, America’s first and foremost masked criminal performance artist in traffic.

Now everybody wants a piece of the Witch. Fans and online critics are hammering her with expectations. Alice’s support staff of Engineers wants her to double down on more, bigger, and riskier productions. Even the chief state official charged with capturing the Witch is back-channeling her words of encouragement â?? the Turnpike Witch is New Jersey’s biggest tourist attraction, after all. And if these pressures weren’t enough, rival interests look to muscle the Witch off her stage: gangs are fighting turf wars on the northern part of the toll road, a rabid civil servant’s vicious PR campaign is calling for the Witch’s head, and now a troop of Manhattan investors want to capitalize on the new “Turnpike chic” by turning Service Areas into nightclubs. And yet even as the Turnpike Witch is drawn into public battle with these adversaries, Alice continues to work through her own private crises of identity, alienation, and entrapment.

Fair to say, then, that life on this Road to Nowhere takes its toll.

Getting Too Young For This!

by Steve Games

At 92, Mike Feral feared death and wanted to live forever. So, like others in 2045 who could afford them, he bought Static Aging and Perfected Health to live for as long as he wanted – or until taken by fate. From the Moon to Mars to Alpha Centauri’s stars, he would live to see the 30th Century. Yet none could stay the tides of inevitable change.

How long do you want to live…if you can live forever?

People used to ask, “How do you want to be remembered?” Now they won’t have to remember. I’ll be there.

“The way you open the novel grabs your readers by the throat–all that talk about how virtually no one is remembered once thousands upon thousands of years have passed. I especially loved this line–“In 50,000 years the creators of electricity, artificial intelligence and biological engineering will of no more importance than the names of those who first harnessed fire, built wheels, or used a stick as a deadly spear – if indeed they even HAD names.” For me, while reading this, I experienced a moment of, “Huh, I guess that’s true.” I, too, have often pondered how our short time on earth makes our lives seemingly worthless unless we do or invent something great, life-altering or phenomenal. Then again, when the last person who remembered us dies, we’re dead and forgotten forever, too. I think this line should be featured on the flap of your novel when it’s published: â??People used to ask me, ‘How do you want to be remembered?’ Now they won’t have to remember me. I’ll be here.’ For brilliance, I back you.”

As they unravel the mystery of the victim’s death, they uncover the secrets that hide in their idyllic location. Infidelity, long-held grudges, a depressed economy, alcoholism, deceitâ?¦

Cooper Collection 010 (Little Matt)

by Bill Bernico

It was going to be hot in Los Angeles during the Fourth of July festivities and I didn’t want any part of it. Last year the temperature reached up into the nineties and tempers flared. I wasn’t on a case at the moment and decided that my patriotism could be displayed just as well at my brother’s house in Chicago.

Philip was the firstborn and three years older than me. He’d left L.A. right out of high school and settled in Chicago during Prohibition. He and his wife, Betty moved into a double flat in the heart of the city where he was on the Chicago Police Department. Betty was content to be a housewife and mother to the two boys, Matthew and Troy. Troy was named after my grandfather and Matt was named after me. I always held a special place in my heart for Little Matt, as he came to be known.

Matt doesn’t want any trouble. He’s in Chicago, trying to relax when his namesake nephew is kidnapped. Matt will stop at nothing to bring Little Matt back home safely.

The Matt Cooper series consists of a total of 131 stories (so far)

Other People’s Blood

by Jan Needle

To people like Jessica Roberts and Rory Collins, the bloody, unfolding story of their native Northern Ireland is no more than a sombre background to their day-to-day existence.

They are young, well-to-do, and attractive. When they fall in love the fact that Jessica is a Protestant and Rory is a Catholic is irrelevant – such things are simply not a problem in their world.

But they are wrong.

Jessica’s father is a powerful business figure in the Province, while Rory’s – now dead – had a reputation for involvement with the Republican cause.

Worse still, Jessica is already involved with a shadowy Englishman called Martin Parr.

With appalling speed their certainties begin to crumble in bigotry and violence, as they become caught up in Other People’s Bloodâ?¦

‘Other People’s Blood’ is a terrifyingly realistic thriller of romance, terrorism, family and betrayal. It is perfect for fans of Gerald Seymour and Robert Harris.

‘The tale of two young people whose life is shredded by the Troubles is all too credible. The exposure of lies, betrayals and hypocrisy – personal and political – is challenging.’ Belfast Telegraph

‘Full of steamy scenes, hatred, lust, snobbishness and all uncharitableness, it proceeds inexorably to its savage conclusion.’ Irish Independent

‘Blood and violence – and sex – there is in plenty, also some fine writing and a genuine feel for the reality of that poor, benighted part of the country.’ Sunday Press

Jan Needle has had more than forty books published, including the best-selling ‘Death Order’ and â??The Devil’s Luck’.

Typecast by Booker Woodman

by Michael J Kerwood

I started writing the â??Cast’ series in 2005.
Typecast by Booker Woodman
If possible, please read in order.

The series has undergone many changes since going to its first paperback print, and it has survived a massive amount of editing and polishing. Also, it has enjoyed a dozen different endings… but now… (drum roll)… it is finished, with what I would call a ‘thinking man’s’ ending; an ending that made even me shudder.

My thanks must go to…
My wife, Irene, for the cover, back photographs and editing.
Anybody that has enjoyed the books… and everybody that hasn’t, didn’t, couldn’t or wouldn’t.
Anybody named Booker Woodman who reads the series and still doesn’t complain.

Typecast by Booker Woodman is book one in a series, followed at this time by book two, Re-cast, and book three, Cast-off. Book four is as yet unfinished, with a working title of Cast-away.
The first book replicates the immediate existence of our main protagonists who, for the first few pages, are very much two dimensional until Typecast by Booker Woodman stamps its influence upon them.
The three following books, Re-cast, Cast-off and Cast-away follow them and other characters that get involved as they try to overcome the irrationalities and the body count that Typecast by Booker Woodman itself instigates.
At the outset of book one, the reader is unsure who the initial characters are, where they are and what is happening around them. It is not too long before we find out some of the answers. They are soon involved with several deaths, deaths that have been recorded over a period of some thirty years or more, some of them achieved by malicious intent and others by mysterious events, but none of them resulting in convictions.
The storyline has developed some charismatic characters, Peece, Fitz Ffastt, Agnes Hale and Harriet Aston, to name but four from a worthy list. But, be warned, it does feature some colourful personalities, so I wouldn’t read it to your nippers or send it to your aged great aunt as a gift.
The interaction between the protagonists and the humour that they sometimes generate, dry, and at other times farcical, is refreshing in what can only be described as their disturbing and sometimes surreal circumstances.

I recommend this series to anybody who enjoys the â??odd’ death, if only to gain a little understanding of what to expect if they too becomeâ?¦ â??Typecastâ?¦’

When Angels Weep (Sequel to Escape From Bosnia)

by Ray Drayton

I stare at my feet, there is nothing under them – then the slipstream hits us and it feels as though I am lying on a slab of concrete. I scream insanely into my oxygen mask, “we came out stable!! We didn’t spin! Thanks Bubs, thanks Manny!”
Countless clusters of stars look down mockingly, causing me to feel embarrassed by my childish outburst. The stars abruptly disappear and I realise Manny has rolled us over into the free fall position.
Somewhere, 30,000 feet below, hidden in the dark lies Slovenia; and the man we had come to get.
We drop rapidly through the black void, reaching terminal velocity of 176feet per second. The ice cold air tears at my body relentlessly and I feel as though my brain is frozen. All I want is the tandem canopy to open up and slow us down…
Robert Munroe is a big man with a big heart, and endless courage to match. Two years earlier he had fled the horrors of Bosnia barely alive, but with the deaths of two comrades on his conscience.
A letter from the MI6 man who he openly despised, arrives like a bolt out of the blue. The money on offer for his alpine skills to guide an SAS hit team into the Balkans is an offer he cannot refuse. Their target is a man who had struck fear and loathing into his heart during his earlier forays into Bosnia.
Vladimir Vulkonic; the monster who instigated a modern day holocaust in a Bosnian town, close to the Serbian border.
The SAS mandate is simple: Locate Vulkonic and bring him out to face international justice for his war crimes – or liquidate him.
Robert is not alone in his quest for vengeance. Eight thousand souls from the town of Srebrenica; men and boys exterminated in the name of ethnic cleansing, ride on his shoulder. Their tortured cries for justice relentlessly fill his consciousness.
He finds himself returning to the Balkans to realise two obsessions which had never left him. The first is to avenge the death and despair wrought upon innocent children who were unwilling participants in the horror that was Bosnia. The second is to realise the secret love for a beautiful English woman that he had harboured for two years. It was a love so secret he had kept it from himself – until now.
He had come back to get two people: Vladimur Vulkonic the butcher of Bosnia, and the lovely Caroline Mounsey, who until now had remained tantalisingly beyond his reach.

‘WHEN ANGELS WEEP.’ A fast moving story, continuing from where ‘ESCAPE FROM BOSNIA’ left off. This is a powerful tale of fear, death and courage against insurmountable odds.
Will Robert Munroe finally succeed in his pursuit of happiness, and would the nightmares cease? Will he stay alive to achieve both??
For him this is not only a physical journey in an effort to find his true self – it is a journey of consciousness that each of us must undertake to escape the clutches of mortal fear and limitation.

The Monarch Project

by Nik Boston

An epic tale of mind-control and sinister conspiracies, magnetic cult leaders and an evil cabal intent on establishing the New World Order.

The US is suffering from an unusual rash of mass cult suicides. The bloody and shocking deaths of almost one hundred people in a seedy Brooklyn warehouse see a team of cult exit experts and behavioural scientists come together to form a task squad intent on getting to the bottom of the alarming trend.

Their new target is a New-Age spiritual teacher, Eon Stella, who claims to be the embodiment of the long-awaited messiah and lives on a private island in the wilds of upstate New York near the border of Canada. He’s eloquent with a casual charm and an impressive bank balance. His â??self-help’ group, Nova Roma , has set up by Stella as a kind of antithesis of the Catholic Church.

The head of the investigating team, Jimi Kritzler, is a hipster-lapsed-Jewish-boy from Brooklyn who has a stash of PhD’s and two best-selling pop-culture books about mind-control. Jimi convinces the group to infiltrate a forty day retreat on the island to get an insider’s look at the beating heart of a budding cult.

Anne Diamond is an Australian theologian who is compiling a manuscript on Vatican corruption and she is leaving behind some domestic dirt to accompany Jimi on the retreat.

The island lies in the Thousand Island stretch of the St Lawrence waterway and boasts a nineteenth century fairytale castle and boat house. The guests soon learn that this cult is like no other. Eon Stella preaches a doctrine of Bacchanalian extravagance where sex, fine whisky and luxurious fare are all part of the experience.

As the retreat progresses through a blizzard-ridden winter, the castle becomes ice-bound and completely cut-off from the outside world. As the isolation and claustrophobia set in, so does the paranoia and the inescapable passions that such close proximity incite.

The retreat becomes a mind battle between Stella and Kritzler. Anne is not sure whose side she should be on but when talk of a CIA mind-control experiment starts swirling into the leery mix, Anne starts to question her own involvement in this operation.

The Monarch Project is a thrilling page turner that will keep you guessing until the end.

No Limit For Charlie

by W A Harbinson

‘What else do you do to keep busy?’
‘Me?’ Charlie said. ‘I kill people.’

Charlie kills people – a lot of them. He doesn’t care who and he doesn’t care how, just as long as he gets what he wants – a hundred thousand dollars in cash, protection during his getaway back to where he came from – a dark cave in Death Valley – and a private talk with the President of the United States.

So Charlie goes on a killing spree, starting with a doped-up hippie musician and a lot of innocent bystanders in a Los Angeles bank. This time Charlie is out for the big time. No limit. And there is nothing anyone can do about it. No-one, that is, except Linda, one of the hostages… but also a powerful senator’s seductive, dangerous daughter.

NO LIMIT FOR CHARLIE… The explosive shock thriller from the bestselling author of GENESIS and REVELATION.

Though first published in the 1990s, this edition includes a Foreword especially written for it by the author.

Long Time Dead (Gus Dury 4)

by Tony Black

Gus Dury is back on the drink. While in hospital after a hit-and-run accident, his best friend, Hod, asks him to investigate the ritual, on-campus hanging of an Edinburgh University student. The murder victim’s mother is a high-profile actress, who has promised a big-money reward. Gus, desperate for money, goes undercover at the university, taking a janitor’s job, and soon uncovers a similar ritualistic hanging which took place in the ’70s. Few of the students are prepared to talk about it – until another one of their group turns up dead by the same method. But Gus now moves into very dangerous waters as he begins to discover what and who is really behind it all – and he becomes the next target for the executioner.

LONG TIME DEAD is the fourth novel in the Gus Dury series, crime writing that hits you like a shot of whisky and aims straight for the gut…

Critical acclaim for Tony Black

“a compelling and convincing portrayer of raw emotions in a vicious milieu”
The Times

“if you’re a fan of Ian Rankin, Denise Mina or Irvine Welsh, this is most certainly one for you”
The Scotsman

“Black renders his nocotine-stained domain in a hardboiled slang that fizzles with vicious verisimilitude”
The Guardian

“Ripping, gutsy prose and a witty wreck of a protagonist makes this another exceptionally compelling, bright and even original thriller”
The Mirror

“Comparisons with Rebus will be obvious. But that would be too easy… Black has put his defiant, kick-ass stamp on his leading man, creating a character that deftly carries the story through every razor-sharp twist and harrowing turn.”
Daily Record

“An authentic yet unique voice, Tony Black shows why he is leading the pack in British crime fiction today. Atmospherically driven, the taut and sparse prose is as near to the bone as you are ever likely to encounter in crime noir. Powerful.”
New York Journal of Books

“With comparisons to the like of Irvine Welsh and William McIlvanney echoing in his ears, Tony Black has become a top-class author in his own right.”
3AM Magazine

by Tony Black

Gus Dury is a changed man. He is off the Edinburgh streets and back with estranged wife, Debs. He has promised her that he won’t get involved in any more dodgy cases which the police can’t or won’t solve. And above all, he’s off the drink. In his pocket at all times is a half bottle of Scotch, but although the label is worn to shreds, he has never so much as loosened the cap. Then his brother Michael is found dead with a bullet in his heart and Gus’s life begins to unravel all over again. How can he keep the promises he has made and still avenge his brother’s murder?

Tony Black’s third novel about washed-up hack turned private investigator, Gus Dury, is absolutely gripping – a labyrinth of violence, secrets and emotion.

Time Release

by Martin J Smith

Pittsburgh, 1986: The city is gripped in a panic as a maniac slips poison onto pharmacy shelves. All of the evidence has pointed to Ron Corbett, but shoddy policework let Corbett off the hook, left the crime unsolved.

Ten years later, it’s happening again. This time, for the most personal of reasons, Detective Downing has made it his mission to see Corbett behind bars. He enlists the help of Jim Christensen, a psychologist who specializes in memory, to interview Corbett’s son, now a young man with a painful past and problems of his own. Does the boy remember his father poisoning pill containers? Has he blocked memories of a horrific crime spree enacted in his own house? As Christiansen explores the boy’s memory and Downing grows more obsessive investigating the case, both men fear that the killings now may not be as random as they once thought, and that unlocking memories may draw them too close to a vicious predator.
