The Life and Prayers of Saint Joan of Arc

by Wyatt North

One part biography, one part prayer book, The Life and Prayers of Saint Joan of Arc is an essential book for any Christian.

Though Joan described herself as “a poor girl who knew neither how to ride nor lead in war,” she did know how to obey God. That simple skill changed the course of both her life and that of the entire nation.

Twenty-five years after her execution, Saint Joan was pronounced innocent, and declared a martyr. Joan stood up for her belief and against all odds fought for her people.

She was a true hero, and remains an inspiration to this day.

Marshall Plan versus The Great Society

by Vithaldas H. Patel

“Marshall Plan versus the Great Society” is a true story of one rural farming family in pre-independence India and its migration, halfway around the world, to the United States for a better life. The author, Vithaldas H. Patel, came to the United States in 1960, for post-graduate studies in engineering at the University of Michigan. When he returned to India, with his wife and two small children, his parents asked him to help his siblings. Patel and his wife reasoned that any amount of direct financial help would be never enogh and never ending. It would also make the recipients dependent on aid, and deprive them of incentives to be self-reliant. Any hand-outs and freebies would be similar to many of President Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society programs. The author rejected such direct help. But doing nothing would crush their parents and would be counter to the upbringings of author and his wife. The author and his wife devised a plan to help dozens of members of their families. While the book is a memoir of the author, spanning seven decades, the Mini-Marshall Plan of his family lasted about 25 years. During this period, the author and his wife assisted many of their family members with legal migration to the United States, paid for their travel, and in some cases, for their college education. They helped the new immigrants with employment and housing. As in the Marshall Plan of Europe, the Patel family members were given interest free loans, to be paid when the beneficiary became gainfully employed. The book describes the struggle of a farmer’s son beginning in his pre-teens, through his rise to the top of his high school graduating class and finishing his studies at Michigan. The young student and the young couple go through many crises in their lives, learning from each event and becoming more mature. The book also narrates many acts of kindness the author and his family received from thousands of Americans during the past fifty-one years. The book also has a brief history of his native India and, at times, the discussions of Indian and American politics that he witnessed, and his personal transformation from a liberal activist to a center-right conservative.

Steve Jobs Biography – Leader Of The New Century (Famous Biographies)

by Drew L. Crichton

Steve Jobs Biography – Leader Of The New Century

There’s no denying how influential Steve Jobs is to the modern world. He left a legacy that is definitely of major significance to a lot of people. When people hear his name, most equate it with success.

The story of his life is not one of smooth, continuous climb to the top. Rather, it is a story of a man who had the aptitude but wasn’t sure which direction to take. It involved experimentation, failure, and success. He eventually figured it out and paved the way for digital revolution.

His death was grieved all over the world but he left it with an undeniably great contribution.

“Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.” – Steve Jobs

An Inconvenient Year

by Yvonne Joye

It is a book that deals with the social side of cancer, as a parent, a lover and a friend. It is a story of coping with uncertainty, the reactions of others and living with them too. It documents the total shock and utter fear that a diagnosis brings and the hopelessness of surrendering to a treatment that brings its own baggage yet ultimately insures life. It talks about confronting hair loss along with discovering the more covert assault on all things feminine. Yet at the very root of the book, ahead of the fear and anger, there is humour and laughter. Though the story of cancer has been told before, it has not been told like this”
