The Conduit (The Gryphon Series)

by Stacey Rourke

Gryphon Series Book 1

All 18-year-old Celeste Garrett wants is to head off to college and make those fun, yet ill-advised, choices college kids are known for. And maybe to spend some time with the hot cameraman she just met. Instead, because of a pact her ancestors made in the 17th century with a mythical creature, she has to save the world.

While normal kids are slamming energy drinks and cramming for exams, Celeste will get her adrenaline rush fighting a fire breathing dragon. She wants to meet friends in the quad to exchange lecture notes, but first she must exchange blows with a shapeshifting demon on the rooftop. Life isn’t always fair for a superhero, but at least she doesn’t have to do it alone. With her brother and sister as sidekicks, they alternate between saving lives and getting on each others’ nerves. Together the trio encounters unspeakable odds, mystical forces and comes face-to-face with an image that will haunt them foreverâ??their grandmother in a leopard print bikini.

“Okay, little side note here. If a psychopathic killer asks if you want to see a trick, say no. That’s the smart thing to do. I, on the other hand, responded, ‘Bring it’.”

Wardens of Light and Shadow (Dracus Saga)

by JM Williamson

Wardens. Selected for their strong, innate connection to the lifeblood of the world, these unique individuals were granted the gift of immortality and tasked with the protection of Kylir and its ancient Guardians against the Darkness. Where once they warred openly, raining unimaginable destruction upon the world, the centuries have seen their conflict shift to the shadows in the hope of gaining victory through the manipulation of the mundane instead of open, devastating conflict. For what victory is there in reigning over a dead world? On the continent of Triclose, war is life and life is war. For two-hundred years, the proud people of this land have battled for control of the long-empty throne – the Wardens and their war, lost to the annals of myth and legend. The children of this land are raised on stories of their ancestors and noble battles against life-long enemies; thus, with each new generation loyalties are sworn, hatreds renewed, and the wars begin anew. It is here, even as this never-ending cycle of generational warfare plays out, that events both unexpected and foreseen threaten to draw the ancient Wardens from the shadows and reignite a war with the cataclysmic potential to reshape Kylir for all time. . .

The Arkaelyon Chronicles Vol 1; (Book 1 & 2); Druid’s Bane & Maig’s Hand

by Phillip Henderson

The Arkaelyon Chronicles Vol 1.
(Contains both Druid’s Bane & Maig’s Hand)

Druid’s Bane (Book 1)   (13 reviews  4.6 /5)

The Illandian Spring Tournament is about to reach its crescendo, and with the king’s only daughter, Danielle de Brie, and her twin brother, Kane, preparing to face each other in the tourney ring for the deciding match the citizens and nobles of Arkaelyon’s capital city are in a fever of excited speculation.

Determined to free herself from the fear her twin brother has always provoked in her and to show the world that men such as Kane de Brie can be defeated, Danielle has every intention of making her brother’s title her own.

But even as the two royals climb the stairs to Illandia’s famous dueling ring, Danielle has no idea that a rescind coven of druids are about to change her world forever or that the deep animosity between Kane and her is fated to plunge the realm into civil war.

A dream the night before is the only hint she has of the dangerous manipulation that is stirring in the shadows of her father’s realm. But the frightful vision is so diabolical that she writes it off as likely the product of her fatigue after a hard fought week of competition and the fact she is about to face her greatest fear in the tourney ring.

But when she makes passing mention of the dream to the Lord Protector, Father Joseph’s response and the secrets he and a priestly order protect are destined to set her on a desperate and perilous path to prevent the fulfilment of a prophecy that if realised will not only see to the destruction of her father’s kingdom and every land on the continent-but herald the rise of an ancient and tyrannical order of Larniusian Druids who have waited centuries to restore the authority of the dark goddess across the face of the world.

Maig’s Hand (Book 2)   (4 reviews  5/5)

With his world in ruins, Kane must either run and hope monastic and royal assassins do not find him, or accept the Archbishop’s offer and embrace high treason.

While the opportunity to replace his father as Arkaelyon’s king and bring bloody revenge down on his sister’s head is appealing–more than appealing, the prospect of being a pawn in a thousand year old struggle between Orthodox Goddians and Larniusian druids disturbs his atheist sensibilities, and more so when he learns the price he must pay to be Maig’s Hand.

Meanwhile, Danielle’s search to find the truth of her dream and the disturbing prophecy it contains continues with her usual gusto. However, the truth she finds could cost her James’ love, destroy her parent’s reputation and rob Eden of his birthright. More still, her persistence will see the streets of Amthenium run red with blood and force her into a deadly showdown that will change her life and the lives of those she holds dearest forever.

In The Beginning…

by Chris Fillmore

In the beginning was Manâ?¦and Man was lonely. Although he was given animal companions in the form of Kindreds (Lion, Bear, and Eagle), still there was a longing for more. Father, all too aware of His creation’s inner desires, dispatched an angel named Eva. The pairing ultimately exacerbated the situationâ??the crux of which coming from Man’s misplaced and, at the time, unfamiliar physical response during the throes of a spirited debate. Father heeded the call as Man cried out and quickly put him to sleep. In that moment, Father’s was struck with inspiration. With the essence of Eva and Man’s rib, Eve [Woman] was formed. As Man awoke to a beautiful stranger staring at him with an uncannily vaguely familiar face, all at once he felt whole.

From then on, Man had a renewed sense of energy and purpose, and was eager to get back to work for his wife. With his Kindreds by his side, he took on the second major task behind naming the animals: classifying plant life. Woman, on the other hand, started to feel the long hours pass with Man away and soon longed for a Kindred of her own. Man explained to her how one received a Kindredâ??their essence would be revealed to them in a dream the night before they were to arrive. But after weeks with no significant dreams to speak of, Woman started to grow discouraged.

After some time, while walking through the Garden, an animal came to Woman. This peculiar creature went by the name of Sepher. Woman excitedly brought her “Kindred” back to Man. Manâ??at this point deeply involved in his workâ??reveled in Woman’s happiness and welcomed the Kindred into the fold. The other Kindreds, however, intuitively saw the new creature in a different light. They could not put a fine point on why, but they reserved a wholehearted welcome. Despite their reservations, they accepted Sepher.

During their moments alone, Sepher started to make Woman question many things, but primarily why it was forbidden to touch the Tree of Knowledge. Woman finally gave in to her curiosity and took from the forbidden tree. In an instant, her eyes were opened. The sensation was extremely intense. Sepher calmed her anxieties, saying it was just her mind getting adjusted to this new level of enlightenment. From there, Sepher encouraged Woman to have Man take the fruit as well, “â?¦In order to take his rightful place beside Father.” Of course the straightaway route would not prove effective, so Woman, with the help of her Kindred, devised a plan. She would use her newfound art of seduction and misdirection to get Man to take from the tree.

by A.M. Manes

In this darkly humorous tale inspired by tabletop gaming, the mighty Zorlob teaches an unsuspecting fantasy world the definition of “chaotic awesome.”

by David Reeder

Playing near the forest where she lives, twelve-year-old Domino finds an acorn of exceptional size. A grey squirrel in a nearby tree, upon seeing the gorgeous acorn that Domino picks up, decides he wants it. He descends from the tree and stalks Domino through the grass. Domino, however, has no difficulty spotting the squirrel and tries to lure him to her by taunting him with it. When the squirrel will not approach, Domino declares ‘squirrels are no fun’ and tosses the acorn to him, but in mid-air and mid-arc, the acorn ‘sticks’ just as if hanging about four feet above the ground is the most natural thing an acorn might do. With both Domino and the squirrel expressing incredulity with this turn of events, Domino, much to the squirrel’s exasperation, promptly investigates and pulls the acorn free from whatever was holding it, leaving in its place a hole in reality. When Domino examines the hole, it dramatically increases in size and eventually topples over her, putting her in a different reality where she is immediately face-to-face with an inquisitive, but apprehensive saber-tooth tiger. After some initial squabbling, they befriend each other, and the tiger, somewhat enthused at the prospect of eating a different world’s critters, agrees to accompany Domino as she tries to find her way home. Along the way they are joined by a fox and run afoul of a hot tempered magistrate who has designs of her own on Domino’s future, designs to prevent her ever going home.

Twelve-year-old Domino is precocious, contemplative, and perhaps more inquisitive than what might be best for her. The story ‘Domino’ is large on innocence and whimsy.
