Loop Bicycle Trips around Greater Seattle Plus the best stops for food and drink along the way

When I moved to Seattle from the east coast about 25 years ago, I started to explore the city and the surrounding area by bike; first, commuting to work and then adding fitness rides to my commuting trips. What I found were challenging routes that gave me a great workout but also some beautiful scenery, great parks, spectacular views plus interesting restaurants, cafes, bistros and bakeries along the way to stop for a snack or a cold drink. I think that by traveling by bike, at my own pace on quite streets and trails, through neighborhoods and parks, I have seen the Seattle area in a way I would not have experienced otherwise. I want to share with you the rides that have given me such a unique insight into our city and surrounding area. Whether you are new to town or a native, I hope you’ll find something to enjoy in these rides that have become my favorites.

In this book I describe several loop bicycle rides in and around the Seattle metropolitan area with rides for every level of cyclist ranging from 13 to 89 miles. Many of the loop rides can be combined or can be done as a shorter “out and back ride”. Each loop described in this book includes a convenient start/end point that offers ample parking for those transporting their bicycle. Any loop can be done in either direction.

The book also contains a variety of parks for rest stops and places for snacks that can be used as stops themselves or just convenient places to buy food or snack items for the rest of the trip to enjoy at one of the many parks in the greater Seattle area. Each route includes detailed information on the degree of difficulty of the route as well as possible detours that include local bike shops, parks, neighborhoods, an alternate hill or just a popular tourist spot.

In addition, each significant hill is listed and quantified by distance, elevation gain, average and maximum grade and a hill difficulty rating known as FIETS1. This rating is common in Europe and was developed by a Dutch cycling magazine, Fiets. This metric puts emphasis on steepness of climbs, and adds additional difficulty for climbs that finish above 1,000 meters (about 3,300 ft). The higher the number, the more difficult the climb. This book contains climbs from a relatively easy 0.1 (W Fort / Gilman Ave (Magnolia), Ride 2) to the most demanding at 8.4 (Hurricane Ridge, Ride 25)

A ride’s overall difficulty is, of course, subjective. What one rider considers easy another finds painful and difficult depending on background and fitness level.

If something goes wrong in our country the president is sent to an undisclosed location. This is a highly stocked and prepared location.
