Night Tide (Blake Sanders series)

by Michael W. Sherer

Blast from the Past …

Blake Sanders thought he left his Midwestern past behind when he went to the University of Washington on a basketball scholarship more than 20 years earlier. But Keely Radcliffe drags it back into the present when she shows up on Blake’s stoop one morning to ask for his help. Back then, Keely’s sister was killed in a lab explosion on a university campus in southern Illinois.

Blake’s best friend Perry Langford was arrested and convicted of murder for setting the charge, but Langford always maintained his innocence, claiming someone else blew up the building. Not even Blake knows what really happened, and he was there. This is a secret he’s kept all this time. Now Langford is out of prison, and he’s gunning for all those he holds responsible for his 20-year stint in jail, including Blake.

A week later, Blake’s cop friend Charlie invites him to a backyard barbecue at his folks’ house. Masked gunmen burst in on the festivities before the two of them can even open a beer. Charlie and Blake manage to hold off the marauders, but Charlie is wounded and when the smoke clears, Charlie’s parents have vanished.

Events begin to snowball, putting Blake on the run from both the shooters and Langford, his childhood friend. Blake realizes they are all related. Soon the FBI and even naval intelligence officer Reyna Chase are on his tail, too. Whoever planted the bomb 20 years ago is cleaning up loose ends, and the prize they’re still seeking after all this time – a revolutionary battery design – is worth a fortune, even worth selling out one’s own country … and killing for.

Praise for Humpty Dumpty…

“Come for the murder, stay for the three-dimensional, realistically fractured characters! … Long plane rides and rainy Saturday afternoons were made for books like this. If you like your suspense with a side of gruesome and a dash of humor, this is it.”
Brandon Stanley
Amazon Reviewer

“Humpty Dumpty is a wonderful start to what I hope will be the first in a fun and thrilling series. I found myself flipping the pages to get to the end and what an ending. The story was well written and the dialogue was sharp, witty and fast-paced. The chemistry between the main characters, Joshua, Had and Cooper was magical… Eagerly awaiting the next installment in this series.”
Romano Robusto
Amazon Reviewer

“Another good crime scene series from one of my favorites. Once again McCray has brought together an interesting cast of characters. Each member of the team has flaws, just like real people. The concept of using nursery rhymes as a theme for murder gives the story a creepy edge. The plot twists will keep you guessing.”
J. Duarte
Amazon Reviewer

Overview:
With a vicious serial killer on the loose, distributing body parts all around the country, the FBI must turn to a disgraced agent and an untested rookie to capture the madman before anyone else is dismembered.

Full of the twists and turns you expect from McCray and Hopkin, Humpty Dumpty is a page turning thriller for mystery fans

More Praise for Humpty Dumpty…
“I am a big fan of this author’s novels… So, I have been excited and waiting a long time for this story… I was not disappointed and continued to read every single page all the way to an ending that was unbelievable, made me feel a little sick, and left me just as speechless as Agent Sariah Cooper… I have never read an ending to a book like this ever and it’s a vision that will be with me for quite a while.”
Robin Lee
Amazon Reviewer

“For me, a book that inspires my imagination so much that I can see the movie playing along as I go is a great read – and this definitely does that. Highly, heartily recommended for fans of murder/mystery novels, fans of James Patterson, and fans of action/mystery movies.”

Sky Game

by L.P. Boucher

In 1980 WarGames featured a teenager who was about to trigger off a nuclear conflict with a mere video game. Half a century later, at the heart of a society dominated by computer technology where electronic surveillance and automation is everywhere, a young man is likewise caught up in a terrifying spiral of events. On June 20 2027, the first fully automatic pilotless airliner crashes on its maiden flight with 400 passengers on board. At a video-game center in Seattle where he plays almost every day on an aeronautic simulator, John Higgins watches the event as it is broadcast live. While the other two billion viewers are deeply shocked, John is totally stunned, for the crash bears an uncanny resemblance to one of his own virtual flights. In a world where one’s every movement is continuously monitored and security constantly threatened by ruthless hackers, he manages to escape from unknown pursuers and sets out in search of the truth, a quest that is shared by CIA agents and a determined crash investigator, and carried out against a background of rivalry between Europe and the US.

At once an action-packed thriller with cliff-hanging suspense and a work of science-fiction for fans of the latest technologies!

Killing Mum

by Allan Guthrie

Receiving ten grand as down payment on a hit isn’t that much of a surprise to Carlos Morales. After all, arranging contract killings is his business. But he never expected that someone might want his mother dead!

What’s equally troubling is the fact that the anonymous package arrived addressed to ‘Charlie’. Only two people call him by that name: his wife and his mother. Has his wife just hired him to whack her mother-in-law? Or is his mother just looking for some help to put an end to her misery? Or maybe there’s another answer entirely.

One thing’s for sure: Carlos is about to find out.

Praise for KILLING MUM

“Dark, warped and funny, and with a surprising number of twists and turns for such a short book… Loved it.” Big Beat From Badsville

“Nobody working today has Guthrie’s way with black humor and sweat-drenched suspense” Bookspot Central

“â?¦ another fantastic whirlwind of violence and intrigue from Allan Guthrie, who is fast becoming a master in his genre. It hits you a powerful punch in the very first paragraph and just gets darker from there on in.” Euro Crime

“All I could do as a reader was hold on tight and get to the end… Not a word is wasted. The characters are real, where they live — and how — makes sense. They tell us about themselves not in what they say but in what they do, how they act, the way they move from one decision to another. â?¦ In that short space and time a complete world has been set up and a monumental chain of events has been completed. An amazing achievement.” Sea Minor

“Guthrie packs his prose with real suspense, his usual droll take on human venality and enough surprises to keep you turning the pages quickly. A really nice piece of crime writing.” Ed Gorman

“another fine contribution to hard-core noir by one if its finest contemporary practitioners” International Noir

Praise for SLAMMER

“SLAMMER is the most relentlessly page-turning novel this reviewer has come across in a long, long time â?¦ delving deep inside a mind that is quickly unravelling into psychotic madnessâ?¦ Guthrie creates empathy for all his characters – there are no faceless monsters here – and in portraying the prisoners and their guards as two sides of the same human coin, he nails a universal truth about the nature of life and about the way we differentiate good and bad, sanity and madness.” The Scotsman

“This is Guthrie’s masterpiece to date, grim and brutal in tone, cunning in design and flawless in the telling. Guthrie keeps the numerous plot turns both exciting and believable. There is a surprise twist in the middle of the novel that stuns the reader and makes the pace even faster…SLAMMER is not only artful, it’s real art.” Bookgasm

“…an absolute masterpiece, really should be at the top of everyone’s “must-read” list” Eurocrime

“…a gripping psychological crime novel. When we speak of those on the forefront of dark fiction …Guthrie’s name is near the top of the list, and SLAMMER proves why.” Bookspot Central

“a dark jigsaw-puzzle of a book… expect moments of ‘oh, I see!’ mingled with sharp sadness. Nick Glass is an unforgettable protagonist and Guthrie has placed him in a darkly tragic, poignant, and ultimately satisfying psychological thriller.” The Drowning Machine

“Guthrie’s prose is a series of short, sharp shocks, reeking of the visceral brutality of the toughest contemporary noirâ?¦ those who enjoy the darker side of the genre are in for some serious thrills.” The Guardian

“one of the best thrillers of the year” The Editor’s Notebook

The Company of Fellows

by Dan Holloway

“the plot rattles along at a great pace with enough twists to keep the most restless armchair detective guessing…add another cracking book the illustrious tales of this most murderous city. Do yourself a favour and pop into the shop to pick up a copy and enter the the dark, disturbing and at times depraved world of The Company of Fellows” (Review by Blackwell’s Bookstore)

The Company of Fellows is a psychological mystery set in the dark heart of England’s oldest University. The perfect read for fans of the Hannibal Lecter novels, Val McDermid, Minette Walters, Mo Hayder or P D James.

In June 2011, The Company of Fellows was voted “FAVOURITE OXFORD NOVEL” in a poll by the world-famous bookstore Blackwell’s and the paperback was given a window and front table display.

Tommy West was a brilliant academic, until a breakdown stopped him in his tracks 12 years ago. He has reinvented himself as a successful interior designer. His new life is comfortable, in every way, and safe. But life without the intellectual challenge is slowly suffocating him.

Charles Shaw is a world-famous professor of theology and sensualist: unpopular with all his colleagues, loathed by his ex-wife and, as of five minutes ago, dead.

As a student, Shaw was Tommy’s mentor. Now Tommy must draw on the professor for inspiration one more time in order to find his killer. But all he has to go on are a handful of papers for the controversial research the professor was working on when he died.

The unspeakable truth about the Professor’s death lies buried in the past: somewhere between the night his daughter was born – and her twin sister stillborn – and the day Tommy broke down. But for Tommy the past is a dangerous place, a long way from the safety he has so carefully built for himself. Can he find the answers before time, and his sanity, run out?

Death On A Budget (Emerson Ward Mystery)

by Michael Sherer

From the bestselling author of the Blake Sanders thriller Night Blind comes a tale of greed and deception, the sixth in the Emerson Ward mystery series. There’s nothing like having kids to change your outlook on life. A toddler has Chicago freelance writer Emerson Ward thinking twice about his habit of tilting at windmills and riding a white charger to people’s rescue. It’s no wonder he turns down his friend Brandt’s pleas to find out why a banker they both knew was shotgunned to death in the park near Montrose Harbor.

But when the love of Emerson’s life leaves for Seattle with their daughter to care for her ailing mother, Emerson has no reason to turn down a cry for help from a childhood friend. It means climbing back in the saddle of his old GMC motor home and returning to the small town where he grew up and swore he’d never return to confront old demons, family, friends and foes he hasn’t seen for 25 years.

Soon he’s up to his eyeballs in a high-stakes commercial real estate scam and a decades-old family secret that threaten everything he holds dear. The deeper he digs, the less he likes what he learns, about his old hometown, the people in it, and even himself. When he links the dead banker to the real estate scam and a group of fundamentalist Muslim businessmen raising funds for terrorists, the FBI steps in to let him know he stands to lose even more–his life.

“Think Travis McGee in Chicago with an Alfa Romeo coupe instead of a moored houseboat,” says author Jeremiah Healy (Rescue, Spiral), “and you have a terrific series.”

Little Use For Death (Emerson Ward Series)

by Michael W. Sherer

Still reeling from the murder of the woman he loved, Chicago freelance writer Emerson Ward accepts a job as a guest lecturer for a semester at his alma mater, a small college in upstate New York. So when one of his students, Bob Marter, comes to him with vague references to something evil happening on the sleepy, rural campus, Emerson ignores his pleas for help.

But Bob turns up dead, an apparent suicide, and Emerson is forced to listen to his intuition, which is telling him that he should have paid more attention to Bob’s concerns. Now he has to find out on his own what Bob knew that may have gotten him killed. Just when Emerson thinks he has it all figured out, another student dies, this time the victim of an apparent accident, and Emerson knows it can’t be coincidence.

The deeper he digs for answers, the more he realizes he’s in over his head, and someone has raised the stakes dramatically. It isn’t about murder anymore, it’s about something far bigger and so wide-reaching that if Emerson doesn’t stop it he’s not the only one who will lose his life.

Michael Sherer is the Thriller Award-nominated author of ‘Night Blind’.

Old friend Brady “Puppy” Barnes pulls Emerson Ward away from a party to ask for help in recovering and finding out who stole a priceless gem collection from his commercial photography studio. Less than an hour later, Puppy is ambushed and shot in front of his own home while Emerson looks on helplessly.

Unsure if the shooting is connected to the jewel theft, Emerson starts poking into every corner of Puppy’s life to see who might want him dead. Suspecting the theft was an inside job since the stones had been replaced with fakes, he even takes a job at the financially troubled ad agency that commissioned the photo shoot to tae a closer look at everyone involved.

The deeper he digs, the more skeletons he finds in the Barnes family plot, all of which paint an unflattering portrait of Puppy himself. Throw in a few dirty Chicago politicians, a murdered judge and a pattern of greed and blackmail, and Emerson soon uncovers a picture worth far more than a thousand wordsâ??one that someone will kill to keep secret.

Michael Sherer is the 2013 Thriller Award-nominated author of ‘Night Blind’.

Deadly Tide (An Inspector Mowgley Murder Mystery)

by George East

Jack Mowgley is anything but an ordinary copper. For starters, how many police officers have â??ACAB’ (All Coppers Are Bastards) tattooed on their knuckles? Or get booze and baccy supplies by smuggling them through the continental ferry port he is supposed to be keeping free of crime? Or dispense sometimes very rough justice without troubling the courts? For these and many other reasons, Inspector John â??Jack’ Mowgley is a very different detective. He also finds the rules and requirements of political correctness a closed book.
After proving a great disappointment to his wife, a painful divorce resulted in our flawed hero being dispossessed of his home in Hampshire and lumbered with the crippling mortgage on a pretentious ruin in Normandy. This is why he lodges where he can in between spending his time on the job or in his dockside local pub, The Ship Leopard.

DEADLY TIDE opens with the world on the brink of a new millennium. A beachcomber finds a Hermes Birkin designer bag containing a large amount of heroin, and an even larger amount of banknotes, and two arms. Meanwhile, a cleaner on board a cross-Channel ferry boat finds a limbless and headless body in a luxury cabin.
At his temporary lodgings above the Midnight Tindaloo, our hero is awoken with the grim news by his fiercely loyal assistant, drinking companion and confidante, Sergeant Catherine McCarthy. To other members of the City force, she is a strikingly attractive, clever but often prickly officer. To Mowgley she is his muse and mate Melons, but he is the only person on earth allowed her to call her that.
After opening the Trunk Murder case, Mowgley and Melons find themselves following a trail across the Channel which becomes increasingly littered with dead bodies… and body parts.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ABOUT INSPECTOR MOWGLEY:

“I was totally absorbed as the tale unfolded. Not so much by the plot, but by waiting for the next assault on political correctness.”

“Refreshingly and hilariously non-PC.”

“Make way for a new anti-hero. A triumph for Mr East.”

“The character was so beautifully flawed, the plot inventive and the humour original.”

“Regular readers of George East productions will recognise the sharp witticisms, the keen eye for the absurd, and the understanding of the human condition.”

THE AUTHOR

George East gained hands-on experience of police procedure when he and his wife ran an inner-city Portsmouth pub frequented by a host of hard-bitten CID officers. As well as telling tales of grisly and bizarre cases in which they had been involved, the officers even once set up a murder room at the pub so they could continue working while enjoying a session at their favourite local…

THE ANTEDILUVIAN DETECTIVE

Name: John (â??Jack’) Mowgley
Rank: Detective Inspector (just)
D.O.B.: 31.1.50
Height: 5ft 11 inches
Weight: 16-17 stone (depending)
Body shape: Lumpy
Distinguishing Features: ‘ACAB’ tattooed on fingers of left hand. Scar on right temple. Frequently broken nose. Right earlobe mislaid.

As the publisher of George East’s books, I’m always pleased to have a new title from George to offer our friends and readers. I have been working with George now for a long time and find his ironic and subtly-layered style to be absorbing, thought provoking and entertaining. Some may think George’s approach to be verging on outrageous, but good perceptive readers see the clear thinking and logic in his characters thoughts and deeds. As for political incorrectness, yes, many people in these modern days would say his Inspector Mowgley is un-pc. Others would say that he was not at all out of kilter with general feelings of a growing number of people about how ridiculous political correctness is becoming.

Reviews for Book 1 in the series – Return to the Aegean

‘E.J. Russell has written a debut novel packed with mystery, intrigue and drama against the backdrop of a beautiful Greek Island that will totally captivate you.’
(Marilou George, The Kindle Book Review.)

‘There are a myriad of things that make me fall in love with a story, but a strong setting has to be at the top of the list. A literary geography is comprised not just of the landscape where the story takes place but also of people, their relationships with the location. Though E.J. Russell’s Return to the Aegean is well plotted, the rich characters and gorgeous setting are what captured my heart.’
(Isla McKetta, A Geography of Reading Blog)

‘A mystery story, a cultural reference, a book about the Greek islands for all seasons, not just the summer time.’
(Greek Network, Press Office, Greek Embassy, London)

‘Her debut novel – a tribute to the Greek islands.’
(The National Herald, NY.)

‘Thalia Shestacova has always had suspicions about how her mother and twin brother died. Returning to her childhood home on the Greek island of Katafigio for the first time since their deaths, she prepares herself for the brutal truth.’ (Daisy Seely – The Press, The Dominion Post, New Zealand)

‘English author Emma J. Russell, who was raised on the Aegean island Paros, wrote a book praising the Greek islands of the Aegean. The breathtaking novel has already attracted attention and is in fact nominated for the Amazon Novel Breakthrough award 2012.’
(Greek Reporter.com – Europe)

‘You can expect murder, love and deep-water diving.’
(NeosKosmos Newspaper – Australia)

‘The novel -a tribute to the Greek islands of the Aegean- has already attracted the readers’ attention.’
(Greek News Agenda)

‘Intrigued? Find out the end of the story, lying on the beach of a Greek island!’
(parikia.co.uk)

‘Return to the Aegean: murder, love and culture.’
(Parikiaki Newspaper, London/Cyprus)

‘This is an intriguing novel that is part mystery and part thriller. There is also a good dose of romance when Thalia meets Petros again. I found the story to be very compelling, and I struggled to put it down! The descriptions of the island and it’s people was very vibrant, If you are looking for a mystery/thriller filled with Greek culture, this book is for you. I have never been to Greece, or any of the islands, but having read this book, I may just have to go and visit!’

Metamind

by Wayne Wightman

In the tradition of Brave New World, Metamind shows an artificial world that is peaceful as long as it is entertained. Then the Ultimate Entertainment device, the Metamind Me-2, is given to a waiting world, with side-effects no one had imagined.

Jack Land, the media face of Metamind Enterprises, looked at the row of gleaming white pods.
“I don’t know what I’m looking at, sir.”
“You’re looking at the end of the world as we know it.”
“Will it be with a bang or a whimper?”
“Both. We’re gonna bang ’em and they’re gonna whimper.”

–Did the eccentric billionaire Theron Hibbing return from space with fabulous alien technology? Or did he just steal it from the Chinese?
–And then Clara Nolan found those incriminating memdots. She just wanted to do the right thing–and dropped herself and Jack Land in the middle of Kafka’s best nightmare, where nothing was what it seemed.
–Now, while half the world prepares for an alien invasion, Metamind wants you to remember,

“Meta. . . Meta. . . Metamind. . . . We’re so good we must be illegal!”

WHAT OTHERS HAVE SAID

Orson Scott Card, Hugo and Nebula winner: “[Wayne Wightman is] …one of the names I[‘ve] learned to look for…. He…is a romantic whose stories confess his belief that individuals can be larger than life, that their decisions can change the world around them.”

John Brunner
, the legend himself: “Wayne Wightman is agreeable company, both in person and via the printed page. As to the former, I’m afraid you will have to wait the chance to make his acquaintance…. As to the latter, however, now’s your chance.”

Richard Paul Russo
, Philip K. Dick Award winner: “One of Wightman’s great strengths is his willingness to go to the edge. He pulls no punches, whether the story is serious or violent or manic. You can count on him to take you places other writers shy away from.”

Elinor Mavor
, editor of Amazing Stories, says of Metamind: “The concept of the impossibly complex and bizarre consequences… is delightfully evil. I’m sure lots of our… ‘rulers’ in Washington would snap up Hibbing’s nasty invention in a heartbeat… and I would imagine they, too, would then have their minds even further scrambled.”

Best Story of the Year 2011
awarded to Wayne Wightman’s “Brutal Interlude” by Orson Scott Card’s online magazine The Intergalactic Medicine Show.

‘Skull & Crossbones’ – Zac Tremble Investigates (series 2) (The Zac Tremble Case Files – Series 2)

by Chambers Mars

â??Skull & Crossbones’ is the first case of â??Zac Tremble Investigates – Series 2′. Series 1 is available in the Kindle Store and the three collections, ‘Six Pack’, ‘Verdict’ and ‘Jury’s Out’ are also available in paperback.

In ‘Skull & Crossbones’, Zac and Paul and Cindy and Delphes get married and everyone heads out with them to Saint Gertrude’s, an island off the coast of Key West, for the honeymoon holiday. However, all is not as it seems in paradise and s00n after arriving, Zac finds himself investigating the weird and gruesome goings on which centre around the eccentric island owner Winston Spart.

The discovery of a severed hand belonging to a local PI ups the stakes and P.E.N.I.S makes an appearance; well, it wouldn’t be a Zac case if it didn’t! In the investigation of the PI’s murder, Zac uncovers the truth about a seventeen year old â??accident’ which robbed Joe, the kids’ entertainer, of his parents. As Zac tries to identify the person who stole Joe’s inheritance; everything seems to be linked and all roads appear to be leading to Spart.

Yes, it does contain pirates; just not the cute variety!

There are some differences in series 2 compared to series 1. The key difference is that the stories in series 2 will tend to be longer; so not anything to be unhappy about!

If you didn’t already know, Zac and Paul are young, gay and lusty. This story has an adult theme, aside from the case being investigated. The descriptions of the sexual relationships are not especially graphic, but they are, nevertheless, a feature.

I sincerely hope that you enjoy the story. Feedback is especially welcome and I would be delighted to hear from you.

The Sarajevo Hostage Crisis

by Carl Theodore

‘Has the world really learned the lessons from World War One?’ On the eve of the 100th anniversary of the assassination of the heir to the Habsburg throne, on June 28, 1914, Auschwitz-survivor and Austrian senator Solomon Birnbaum addresses this question in a public lecture in Sarajevo. The next day he goes missing. Other kidnappings follow and soon the shaky peace on the Balkans is, once again, tested. Shuttling between Sarajevo and Vienna, journalist and Bosnia old-hand Alois Hofer and his American and Bosnian colleagues pursue the unfolding story, obtaining worrisome answers to Birnbaum’s question in the process.

Although this novel is a work of pure fiction, events are placed against a background of existing international politics and some existing politicians are cast in imagined roles and settings.

The author is a retired diplomat who served as his country’s ambassador in Sarajevo and also did four years of service in Vienna. The book reflects his expertise in questions of international security and good governance.

The Syndicate

by Steve White

On a frosty morning in March 2030, a recidivist petty thief was arrested for burglary as his feet dangled from the window of an English country home. Although a seemingly routine instance of crime committed by a hopeless reprobate, the occurrence led to an unanticipated and alarming discovery which shook the British government to the core. Within his plunder was a collection of data sticks containing what amounted to a blueprint for the most virulent criminal enterprise ever known. Powerful, organised and ruthless, this paramilitary organisation cultivated a cult-like fidelity in its members and ruled the dark recesses of London’s criminal underworld with an iron fist in a granite glove. But that had only been the start. Once established, the organisation’s influence spread like a blood stain through the fabric of the United Kingdom wiping out all who stood its path before its unyielding power was felt on the global stage. Yet strangely for such a large, complex and sublimely successful illegal enterprise, those in power knew little or nothing about its activities, some even questioning its very existence. Stranger still was the fact that from the very moment this shocking discovery was made, the organisation vanished from the face of the earth and not a single one of its membership was ever identified. The only remnant of this unmatched criminal superpower today is a name. A name whispered between bad men in illicit circles and used as a byword for both brutality and order…the Syndicate.

The Closet (Summerset Tales)

by Jac Wright

Written as a prelude to the author’s full-length title THE RECKLESS ENGINEER.
Love is a battlefield. Who will get out of it alive?

â??â??Harry Duncan Wood runs a hotel in the historic city of Bath with his beautiful young wife. When he falls in love with Mill House, an old greystone farmhouse on the banks of river Avon among the soaring hills of Somerset, and sets about moving his family there, the first appearances of the cracks in the marriage take him by surprise. Is his wife seeing another man? Duncan needs to get to the bottom of the affairs for his own sanity. Sometimes, however, ignorance is bliss and will also keep everybody alive.

The Closet is written in the tradition of Charles Dickens’ The Pickwick Papers and Thomas Hardy’s Wessex Tales as the first in the collection of literary short fiction. The tales have an added element of suspense similar to the works of Roald Dahl. The Closet accompanies the first title in the author’s full-length literary suspense series, The Reckless Engineer, published by Soul Mate Publishing, New York.
