This review is from: Blackbird: A Boy Meets The Devil For the First Time (Kindle Edition)

I’ve been reading about 70 years and Blackbird is one of those rare nuggets of pure gold in a whole mountain of clay . It plays out like the blues, full of riffs and bass and gravel that spin themselves into a mirror of soul not ashamed to get down and dirty and come up dragging us into a light we refused to open our eyes to before. Don’t let the stomp and shuffle and guffaws fool you into thinking it’s not about you, you ain’t gonna get off that easy. I was in Gadsden Alabama for about three months in 1958, and he’s not telling any lies. It was my first experience with deep southern segregationist views. A great morality tale told by a masterful and powerful writer about a very unique character.

About this story:

The old woman living in the high rise for the elderly was the same as all those around her…

With one exception.

A Five Star Smashwords Review:

“I am writing this through my tears I am so touched… as though a knife has pierced my heart forever. It’s wonderful writing. The words themselves burn into my mind and soul. Thank you for sharing this.”

Burnt Cupcakes-a Memoir of Marriage, Motherhood and Madness

by Carrie Cader

When thirty-one year old Carrie is over-extended, exhausted from work, and trying to pull together the perfect birthday for her child, she ends up on the kitchen floor, lying in a sticky mess of splattered cupcakes, wondering how exactly she had gotten to this point in her life.

A candid memoir, Burnt Cupcakes-a Memoir of Marriage, Motherhood and Madness, is the story of a young woman who is struggling to balance her marriage, two babies, career and home, not to mention all the social pressures that accompany raising a family in a close-knit community, all while not losing herself along the way.

Presented with truth and humor, readers of Burnt Cup- cakes will respond with recognition and empathy to an honest and genuine, but not always pretty, depiction of contemporary marriage and motherhood.

When the Jonquils Bloom Again, Vol 3: Scoliosis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and My Chiropractor: The Paper: The Algebra Note: and Cheerleading Camp

by J G Knox

When the Jonquils Bloom Again, volume 3: Scolosis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, & My Chiropractor; The Paper; The Algebra Note; and Cheerleading Camp, Sharon goes from twelve to sixteen, maturing, puberty, coming of age. Sixth grade, her only sex education class, Mrs. Cole puts up a picture, a saggital slice through the pelvis of a man and woman doing it.
Mrs. Cole says, “The man pokes his thing in here. The sperm comes through here. The egg comes down here. They meet—and you’re pregnant. Girls don’t do it. And that goes for you too, boys.”
A room full of twelve-year-olds snicker.
Pokers and pokees not poking, that’s all there is to it: the end of sex education.
On the front row by Sharon, a short, homely boy, not old enough to have acne yet, Pauly makes eyes at her.
Sharon, not yet close to puberty, cringes, thinks, Why would anyone do something like that—yuck!
Rock, a tall, good looking boy on the back row, a budding thesbian, thinks, To poke or not to poke, that’s the Question.
Later in high school, past puberty, alone in her bed, Sharon fantasizes about Rock poking her.
Rock, the fantasy of many of his female school mates, doesn’t date much in high school, nor college. Later on in Hollywood he becomes the fantasy of millions of teen age through old age females, in their fantasies him always doing the poking.
In reality, he makes the fantasies of at least dozens of sexual partners come true, none of them female, and them doing the poking.
How could millions of women and Rock develop such different fantasies?
The problem is all humans have Ashberger’s Syndrome, a mental disorder characterized by large brains and brilliance mixed with mental dysfunction: Albert Einstein is a prime example. A vision of nuclear physics, an insight into nature unmatched in human history, and still not understood by even other physicists, he changed our world. Yet, he had problems in school, failed high school mathematics, and had constant difficulties dealing with ordinary people.
Modern studies show these larger brains put too much distance between neurons and too much input into primitive areas of the brain designed for simpler, smaller organs. This causes disabilities. Smaller brained mammals like rodents and bats seem to perform without difficulty. Our large brains capable of imagining, understanding, and creating universes, all seem to have trouble with keeping sex straight. Simple poking becomes elaborate rituals of courtship, wooing, fantasies, and complete misconceptions. Rock has misconceptions. Sharon has misconceptions. Doesn’t everyone?
Some less than others, there is this tribe in the Amazon Jungle. They run around naked all the time, and have sex when they want with kids watching. With nothing left to imagine, their children tend to grow up with one very basic concept of sex. Fetishes and homosexuality are very rare.
Imprinting at the right time works with even larger brains, but input of this nature in civilized societies is not the custom and illegal, and creates individuals who have difficulty functioning in our dysfunctional world. This ain’t the Amazon Jungle. Early teens growing up in houses don’t have a clue about real sex. They never see real sex, and seeing sex ain’t experiencing sex. Tactile experience is a critical element. All these teens develop sexual thoughts that become fantasies substituting for reality.
Despite the sexual nature of this introduction, the sex is pre-sex. Nothing more than first kisses occurs in this volume. It is a story of growing up, becoming a woman, learning about God’s love more than that of a mate, and immaginations of mates, with practical insite into youth, some health conditions, and the value of correction. A good book. a good read.

Kids Brain Power From Birth To Nine Years And What Parents Should Know About Baby Brain For Early Childhood Development

by Stanley Contreras

Ever wondered why your child suffers from fears which seem completely irrational, why your toddler throws inexplicable tantrums or why your teenager never seems to plan ahead? The answer could lie in their brain structure.

A young child’s brain is physically structured and built quite differently from an adult’s, and it doesn’t function in the same way. In the first few years of life it will undergo an amazing transformation, and throughout our first few decades it continues to constantly grow, change and develop – in fact, the human brain is a work in progress until well into young adulthood. Until the relevant parts of the brain are fully grown, developed and matured, children genuinely can’t think in the same way as adults do – and don’t experience the world in the same way.

This book covers brain development in children from birth to nine years, including language development in infants, gross and fine motor development, and how the brain grows, develops and increases in complexity during childhood.

It also deals with childhood fears and worries, separation anxiety, â??magical thinking’ in young children and difficulties with decision-making and understanding the future consequences of actions. From the first steps a newborn baby makes towards recognizing his mother’s face or learning to use his hands and fingers, to the social pressures and sense of identity. which pre-teen children begin to feel, the physical development of their brain’s neurons and synapses plays a huge role in their journey towards adolescence, adulthood and independence.

The Quality of Effort Workbook: Integrity in Sport and Life for Student-Athletes, Parents and Coaches

by Reggie Marra

The Quality of Effort Workbook includes the revised text of the 2013 edition of The Quality of Effort, along with content-based end-of-chapter questions and an expanded Appendix and Resources section.

The end-of chapter questions, which can be engaged using the Kindle notes function, your preferred digital entry device or pen and journal, will challenge you to explore your own values, beliefs and motives as a student-athlete, parent or coachâ??and as a player in the larger arena of life itself.

The 2013 Quality of Effort and this companion Workbook marry literature and sport, story and effort, the thrill of experience and the “dignities and disasters” of our interpretations. Reggie Marra speaks to us through the soul of a poet-athlete-teacher-caregiver and kid who got cut from the team he later went on to coach.

He invites us into the worlds of Mary Catherine Bateson and Ken Wilber; Bob Knight and Boethius; Joan Benoit Samuelson and Don Beck; and Sacred Heart High School’s 1979-1980 boys’ junior varsity basketball team.

If you’ve been waiting for a perspective on sport that embraces physiology, philosophy, and ongoing development, and yet at its core is all about your favorite topicâ??you, your wait is over.

Marra takes us by the hand and challenges us to inquire into our own values, behaviors, and relationships within the complexity of the 21st-Century environments in which we live, learn, work and play. “Preaching” only what he practices, the author authentically engages each of us to become increasingly more aware of our storiesâ??the interpretations we choose, and how they affect, and even effect, what we do next as parents, coaches, student-athletes and human beings.

Praise for the 2013 Quality of Effort:

“As a former college athlete and longtime leader of high-performance military units, I recommend Reggie Marra’s work with unbridled enthusiasm…. Following this comprehensive approach to training will not only produce better athletes, but also happier and healthier citizens as our youth grow and take their place in the world.”
– Fred Krawchuk, Retired U.S. Special Forces Colonel and RAND Consultant

“The Quality of Effort has helped me reinterpret my career as a professional athleteâ??providing both relief and direction….Reggie Marra offers a map to tomorrow’s competitive edge, a map that requires effortâ??not necessarily in doing more drills or pushups, but in taking responsibility for all aspects of your approach to life.”
– Ryan Leech, Professional Mountain Biker (Retired) and Professional Integral Coachâ?¢ http://ryanleech.com

“The Quality of Effort inspires coaches and parents to divert their eyes from the scoreboard and focus on nurturing the heart, mind and body of today’s young athlete. Reggie Marra offers a blueprint that encourages our children to become not only better athletes but better people. He delivers a powerful message filled with humanity and honest answers to questions that we sometimes think but may not want to ask….”
– Anthony Perrone, VP, Challenger Division, Cortland American Little League

“….Reggie Marra has, with a master’s touch and rapier wit, illustrated that the essential value of effort is in the quality of the lesson we have learnedâ??and not in the victory or defeat on the field of battle. The book is an incredibly personal gift from Reggie to the reader, written through and with his bountiful, open heart.”
– Tom Rubens, Founder, http://theaccountabilityfactor.com

“….narrating [The Quality of Effort] through an integral lens adds a holistic, relevant complexity and robustness to how we think about sport, which is such a vital element of our cultural lifestyle, and in much need of an integral assessment of its impact on student-athletes, parents and coaches….a grand opportunity from which we can chart a significantly improved learning and developmental pathway for generations of student-athletes to come.”
