Abode of Souls: The Gift

by R.L. Evans

Set primarily in Japanese occupied Malaya during World War II, “Abode of Souls: The Gift” tells the story of prisoners and their captors in Demeure des Ã?mes (Abode of Souls), an internment camp for Allied civilians.

Principal characters among the Allies include sisters Bea Garlow and Betty Anderson, two American women whose complimentary strengths help sustain the diverse and sometimes contentious inhabitants in the camp. Another featured protagonist is Samuel McCauley, a British academic and linguist who finds purpose in educating young prisoners.

Lieutenant Shoji Tsuru administers Demeure des Ã?mes. A literary scholar who studied in the U.S., Tsuru understands and sometimes sympathizes with his Western prisoners. He is a man on a tightrope, trying to balance his sense of patriotic duty, and his better nature as a man who does not enjoy inflicting pain. As a counterpoint to Tsuru, Sergeant Susumi Nakati relishes every opportunity to punish and torment his captives.

Not all of the prisoners are good people, and not all of their Japanese masters are evil; most display their weaknesses and strengths when confronted with the hardships of such an unremittingly difficult existence. The internees suffer numerous hardships: grueling work details, hunger & malnutrition, and appalling abuse. Yet, amid all the brutality, turmoil, and heartache, stories emerge of hope, humor, the power of love and friendship, and the astounding resilience of the human spirit in times of trial.

Arizona Territory — the famed town of Tombstone is dying. Silver mines are flooding. The surrounding towns are disappearing. Into this country rides Billy McKaller, a 24-year-old outlaw with a deadly past, a lightning-quick hand, and a gang of followers determined to survive the tightening noose of the law.

Hot on their trail — the unwavering marshal Joe Calliope, veteran sheriff Wyatt Lareson, and his fiery young deputy, Dewnan Kender.

Outlaws throughout the territory flock to McKaller’s gang, ready for one final fight to the death. The three lawmen begin to gather a posse from the remnants of Tombstone’s population.

Amid the impending confrontation, Lareson and Kender begin to unearth the stories of Calliope’s past, a past tied much closer to the young outlaw McKaller than either of them could imagine…
