Editing Can Kill An Idiot: A Short Memoir

by Michael Kroft

Told with humorous candor and enough self-defecation to require a double flush, Michael Kroft utilizes 28,000 words to quickly detail his five days leading up to the heart of the story, his then first-time ten-day stay in a hospital. With the actual situations almost too surreal to be called non-fiction, the memoir’s many anecdotes are presented in such an easy-to-read manner and with such a Devil-may-care attitude that it can only be told by a man so humbled by his years that he is forthcoming regarding his ignorance.

From first noticing a pain in his neck and as it grows, denying its dangerous potential and then trying to ignore it as he performs his final edit on his second novel while not being able to physically swallow and almost not being able to speak, Kroft walks us through his sometimes broken reasoning, his first aborted attempt at the Emergency Department, his first night at the hospital under the care of the nurse from Hell, the language tension lingering between a semi-monolingual Anglophone within a primarily Francophone hospital, waking up during his surgery, being hit on by an attractive female patient who just so happens to be…, and much more. The story will entertain, educate and perhaps even frighten.

An Art Affair in Italy (Year One. A Novice Kiwi Goes to Italy to Live Book 1)

by A N Stuart

Description

This book is not a ‘how to live in Italy’ book. I don’t offer any advice on how best to do things if you go to live in Italy. Mainly because we all have different agendas we live by. Yes, you may garnish some tips from this book and the ensuing series.

I’m an avid writer of my journal and the book is written from these notes. It’s not a romantic look at Italy, just how I see it.

I wrote it in the hope that it may inspire women to follow their dreams, no matter what obstacles they need to overcome. My basic agenda was to live in another culture, to see as much of Europe and the world as possible, before succumbing to age. I want to be a better person, by becoming more aware of different cultures.

Above all I have a burning desire to create art. I use and experiment with many different media, always searching for my voice, so to speak.

This is a record of my journey

Sample from the book.

At Fumicino, as I said before, so easy to get through customs, but you do need to have a â?¬1 piece for the baggage trolley, it’s chaos. (Noted last time, you no longer need to pay for the trolley) Grab your bags and out the door. I struggled with my bags up the escalator. As I stepped onto the escalator, my bloody alarm clock, in my suitcase, for some reason, started to go off. The guy behind me jokingly yelled.. “ha una bomba” “she has a bomb”! Christ! why doesn’t he shut-up! As I got to the top of the stairs there were 3 or 4 Carabiniere with machine guns. Well, I thought, this is it, they’re just going to shoot me, as I floundered into the bag to shut the damned thing off. No, they’re Italian (well, I know that now, but not at the time) they just laughed and went on by. I threw a scornful look to the man behind.

Pushkin Square

by Michael Babel

In the USSR in Moscow in 1973, the third of May at Pushkin Square is the first demonstration with transporant: emigrate to Israel.

It was dangerous, so only five participants, considering provocateur.

Ð? СССР в Ð?оскве в 1973, Ñ?Ñ?еÑ?Ñ?его мая на плоÑ?ади Ð?Ñ?Ñ?кина пеÑ?вая демонсÑ?Ñ?аÑ?ия с Ñ?Ñ?анспоÑ?анÑ?ом за вÑ?езд в Ð?зÑ?аилÑ?.

With Closed Eyes, or Disobedience

by Michael Babel

The Assassination attempt, detainment before trial, the police, investigation, the court.

Michael’s books have brought him to such a life.

In 1973 Michael escaped from the USSR after a dangerous struggle with the authorities for the right to leave the country. The KGB state was left behind. The land of his ancestors was ahead and in his suitcase his first book “My Israel”.

But the new reality turned out to resemble the reality that had been left behind.

Israel turned out to be a copy of the Soviet Union and the KGB.

Michael writes a book “The Dunces” about the State of Israel. And then the book “Farewell, Israelâ?¦ or The Last Utopia” about the inevitable collapse of such a State.

In 2003, three days before the book was handed over to press, an attempt on Michael’s life was made. But he came out of it alive.

And immediately he writes the book “The Attempt” about this KGB State, and then the book “The Court Trial” – Michael’s trial against this KGB State.

The State brought opened a court trial against him with a false accusation.

Parallel to the trial, Michael writes the book “With Closed Eyes, or Disobedience” about this trial. He demands to be led to the trial in handcuffs, otherwise he does not go, he refuses to defend himself and sits with his eyes closed.

The law court acquitted him, but the General Prosecutor demanded a prison sentence of three years.

This happened on 2006. From this moment the court has concealed its intentions, but will hang over Michael for many long years.

This is how things are done in this country of lawlessness.

As a result of the persecution, of the attempt and the trial, Michael remained alone, and his wife was seriously ill.

One day he read on the internet about the State of Israel an essay, that is very close to his views. He wrote to the author about this. Nehama, the author of the essay, started to read Michael’s books. And then she started to tell him her own terrible story: the struggle against the KGB for the right to leave the USSR, her arrival in Israel in the same year 1973, the horrors of persecution by the Israeli KGB and her forced escape from Israel to the USA.

The torments of the persecuted Nehama are told against the background of the persecution against Michael.

By his example, Michael had affirmed that this is a KGB State. Now there is a second example, Nehama’s – this is not yet a confirmation, but a proof.

The Israeli KGB continues to follow Michael, and this deteriorates his wife’s health, Nehama is barely alive from what she has suffered at the hands of the KGB. The authors decide: as long as they are still alive they will interrupt their book before the coming Jewish New Year.

Israeli publishers do not want to work with Michael. He publishes his books, several hundred copies, of the book and also has published in several hundred copies in Russian and Hebrew. Bookstore chains do not take his books for sale.

The totalitarian system.

This book is about life in two totalitarian twin States.

The authors have never met.
