25: A Tasty Tale from the Heart of Asia

by Chaiyaporn Ruamklang

To some, age isn’t yet an element of concern. To many, it’s something they’ve started to think about. To a lot of people, it’s more and more on their mind. Elsewhere, it’s proclaimed to be just a number. And then, for many others, it’s the ultimate reminder of how their days are numbered.

Everywhere we go, we see how this point of reference is being used, to death. We use it to define our time and place. We use it so that we know which label we are entitled to, whether it’s “Baby-Boomer”, “Generation X”, or “Generation Y”.

Regardless of what your reality may be, lands and territories specify from which point in life you can drink legally. They dictate at what age you may enter into binding contracts, give consent, vote or lawfully engage in sex.

Most societies have a good idea on when you’re supposed to be “accomplished”, “settled”, breeding the next generation, and, later, plowing through a “mid-life crisis”.

Then, after seeing you enjoy the highs and survive the lows, they’ll have enough of you. “Hey, we’ve had a good run, but your time is up. Retire,” they’ll gently say.

And in some places you can even choose to die, under some dire circumstances of course. This is not to mention a certain sub-culture in which artsy characters seem to have chosen to perish and, in the process, immortalize themselves, at the age of 27.

In one particular culture, 25 is the most vulnerable, hapless and dangerous year. This is a product of their tenacious belief in past lives. Many lose their jobs. Many are jilted. Many fall ill. Many have accidents. Many even cease to exist.

Set in the strategic location that is Bangkok, Thailand, “”25″ – A Tasty Tale from the Heart of Asia”, opens with our hero “Mann” turning 25. Here are his five basic facts as a backdrop against which this particular year plays out.

He has;-

two jobs – you’ll see which one fills the ego and which one the pocket.

two best friends – will he manage to reconcile the two? What “divides” them?

two girlfriends – does this translate into two children as well?

two “experiments” – are both executed during this one year? Which one has the biggest impact?

two fathers – and these two men are good friends who don’t talk.

What else?

Well, he has one mother, and one boyfriend, maybe?

Meeting the Middle East: Travels in Arabia

by Jason Smart

Meeting the Middle East is a lighthearted travelogue through twelve countries of Arabia. Starting in the Gulf State of Qatar, Jason Smart sets out on his whirlwind tour. From the futuristic skylines of Doha and Dubai to the ancient temples of Petra and Byblos, he visits some of the greatest cities this often-misunderstood part of the world has to offer.

Among his adventures, he swims in the Dead Sea, takes a transit through Saudi Arabia, sees the bullet holes of Beirut and almost succumbs to heat exhaustion in Bahrain. Find out how a Land Cruiser rams him off the road in Qatar, and why, in Kuwait, he almost gets into a fight with a large man wearing a white robe. As his journey continues, he takes a day trip to Israel, has a memorable encounter with a Turkish barber in Istanbul and experiences the warmth of the Kurdish people in Iraq. His journey ends in Ajman, the smallest of the United Arab Emirates, where he gets to see some of the more unsavoury sights of the Middle East.

Meeting the Middle East is Jason Smart’s ninth travel book.

Classic stories, stretched truths and wry observations of life in the Pine Tree State by columnist and professional storyteller John McDonald.
A Moose and a Lobster Walk Into a Bar is a wonderful mix of classic Maine storytelling, stretched truths and wry observations made by John McDonald during his many travels through the Pine Tree State. In this collection of essays and stories, John extols the important economic power of Maine’s Yard Sale Industry, bemoans that Massachusetts, still upset because it allowed Maine to become a state in 1820, is buying it back one house at a time and relates how the state’s infamous black fly was really just an attempt at controlling tourists gone haywire. You will also meet Maine characters like Uncle Abner, Merrill Minzey and Hollis Eaton, and find yourself pondering just where the truth ends and the story begins.
