As You Like It

by William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare’s exuberant comedy As You Like It is his playful take on the Renaissance tradition of pastoral romance, edited by H.J. Oliver with an introduction by Katherine Duncan-Jones.

‘All the world’s a stage,

And all the men and women merely players’

When Rosalind is banished by her uncle Duke Frederick, who has usurped her father’s throne, she flees to the forest of Arden where her exiled father holds court. There, dressed as a boy to avoid discovery, she encounters the man she loves – Orlando, similarly forced into exile by his older brother Oliver – and resolves to remain in disguise to test his feelings or her. A gloriously sunny comedy, As You Like It is an exuberant combination of concealed identities and verbal jousting, reconciliations and multiple weddings.

This book contains a general introduction to Shakespeare’s life and Elizabethan theatre, a separate introduction to As You Like It, a chronology, suggestions for further reading, an essay discussing performance options on both stage and screen, and a commentary.

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was born to John Shakespeare and Mary Arden some time in late April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. He wrote about 38 plays (the precise number is uncertain), many of which are regarded as the most exceptional works of drama ever produced, including Romeo and Juliet (1595), Henry V (1599), Hamlet (1601), Othello (1604), King Lear (1606) and Macbeth (1606), as well as a collection of 154 sonnets, which number among the most profound and influential love-poetry in English.

If you enjoyed As You Like It, you might like Much Ado About Nothing, also available in Penguin Shakespeare.

‘At once sublime poet and master dramatist’

Albert Finney In Character

by Quentin Falk

In the 1960s, Albert Finney was the screen’s incarnation of the new British working-class hero. In the theatre, he was hailed as the â??new Olivier’. Yet, instead of actively pursuing either image, he went his own way and became a millionaire.

To some, he became the leading actor of his generation. To others, he had an ambition bypass. To severer critics, Finney has remained cheerfully indolent, almost wilfully failing to fulfil the remarkable early promise which led to comparisons not only with Olivier, but also Scofield, Burton, Cagney and even Spencer Tracy.

On screen, he appeared in more than twenty films, including classics such as â??Saturday Night and Sunday Morning’, â??Tom Jones’, â??Two for the Road’, â??Murder on the Orient Express’, â??Annie’, â??The Dresser’, â??Under the Volcano’, â??Miller’s Crossing’ and â??The Playboys’.

On stage, where he was chosen to lead the first South Bank National Theatre Company in the mid-1970s, he has played Macbeth, Hamlet, Tamburlaine the Great, Henry the Fifth, Billy Liar and Luther.

On television, he’s run the gamut from Pope John Paul II to Kingsley Amis’s â??The Green Man’. Over his remarkable career, Finney, the son of a Salford bookmaker, has earned four Oscar Best Actor nominations and won a host of awards worldwide.

He has been married (and divorced) twice, indulged in very public affairs, owned a fortune in horseflesh and travelled to most corners of the world. He also has a son, Simon, from his first marriage to Jane Wenham.

His humour and drive was an inspiration for his fellow actors – especially when times were hard and morale was at an all time low. Recollections from his former colleagues are fondly described.

Yet the man, who from his record would appear to be a pillar of the establishment, seems deliberately to have remained an outsider.

In â??Albert Finney In Character’, Quentin Falk attempts to probe the real man beneath the many masks of actor, director, traveller, bon viveur and lover. Falk has spoken on and off the record to many of Finney’s friends, colleagues and critics, including Martin Sheen, Angela Lansbury, Lindsay Anderson, Karel Reisz, Gregory Hines, Carol Burnett, Susannah York, Alan Parker, Robert Hardy, Peter Nichols, Sidney Lumet, Bernard Hepton, Anthony Hopkins and many many more.â??

Quentin Falk, author of books on Graham Greene, Lew Grade, the Rank Organization and Anthony Hopkins, is a former editor of â??Screen International’, and he also contributes regularly to the â??Daily Telegraph’, the â??Mail on Sunday’ and the â??Sunday Mirror’.

Group Rehearsal Success: Avoid The Mistakes Others Make And Rehearse Your Way To The Top

by Simon Horsey

“This could be the difference between having a band and pursuing a solo career!”

It’s a fact: Most bands break up not because of musical differences, but because of rehearsal differences.

How many times have you been frustrated in a rehearsal?
How many bands do you know who have broken up?
How many gigs or concerts have you played, KNOWING you could be better?
“Success – no matter what your style”

It doesn’t matter whether you are in a rock band, a jazz quintet or a string quartet, the rules of rehearsal still apply and the problem is that MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW THEM! This leads to frustration amongst band members and arguments within the group, which ultimately often lead to bands breaking up JUST AS THEY ARE ABOUT TO MOVE UP TO THE NEXT LEVEL.

“Avoid The Mistakes Others Make”

at $4.99. Read on your PC, Mac, smart phone, tablet or Kindle device.

Here is a bit of what you will learn

Model trains have gone a long way since the carpet railways of the 1840s. The advent of more sophisticated electric trains with decent power packs, motors and rail systems has allowed the modern enthusiast an opportunity of turning a simple hobby into a work of art.

Model railroading is more than just making miniature trains go round and round on a trackâ??the most avid and dedicated of the modelers spend their hours crafting the perfect layout for the entire ensemble; putting down complicated tracks that go through exquisitely crafted and expertly replicated scenery and arrive at realistic replicas of stations, buildings and other miniature structures that are painstakingly arranged and weathered to provide the most true-to-life homage to its real world counterparts.

There is no greater satisfaction than sharing this completely engrossing hobby turned artistic expression of realism to your friends and family. The whole process can even be participated on my multiple people, or simply be the product of solitary work. It is solely the prerogative of the enthusiast.

This book aims to convey the message that entering into the world of model railroading is easy and incredibly rewarding. The sense of satisfaction in seeing the culmination of your workâ??the train running flawlessly against a complete layout of urban and rural vistas will be nothing short of magnificent.

Waitui Sam: Sheep Muster

by Thaddeus McCarthy

Waitui Sam: Sheep Muster is a short story about an atypical early January morning day on the farm Waitui. Sam is the biggest dog on the farm, is the biggest personality, and is consequently the protagonist of the story. His Master is affectionately called, The Boy, due to him not really being the main boss on the farm. The main boss is really his father, who is called Dad, as The Boy refers to him. The other main characters consist of the animals (other than Sam). Some of them include the dogs Ice, Turk, Dude, Grunt and Gyp. There is also The Boy’s horse Charlie, and of course there are the sheep and cattle, which both feature prominently.

This story starts off normally as The Boy walks up the road from the house, and towards the kennels with his pet dog Homer. With (his) Dad being away on his summer holiday the sole charge of the farm today will be in The Boy’s (and Sam’s) hands (/paws). And of course The Boy has left the big job till right at the end of Dad’s trip away. But first The Boy and his canine friends must feed hay to the cows and calves, and this doesn’t at all prove to be an easy task. By the time that The Boy returns to the kennels, he is exhausted. Although one of the dogs has done a runner, no time can be wasted, and The Boy quickly runs to saddle up his horse. As the team head out to the back of the farm, The Boy knows the biggest adventure of the day has hardly begun, but the real big event of the day is brewing in the clouds out to the West. The Boy has no idea that brewing in those clouds in the distance, is once-in-a-century storm. This storm will consequently mean that this muster, which will run into the next day, will be an adventure like never before.

Shipping Container Home: 30+ Easy Decorating & Designing Ideas (how to build a shipping container home, shipping container home construction, shipping container designs)

by Imogen Murphy

Shipping Container Home

30+ Easy Decorating & Designing Ideas!

Transforming shipping containers into new homes â?? sometimes known as â??Cargotecture’ â?? is a rapidly growing industry all over the world. Professionals and amateurs alike have been using containers to create homes, offices, studios and storage spaces, as well as being used as emergency accommodation following natural disasters.

This method of creating buildings is relatively cheap, eco-friendly (since they do not require new materials to construct and are saving space in landfill that would otherwise be taken up by abandoned containers) and allows the designer to create practical, perfectly-adapted and unique homes. They are easy to install and transport, quick to convert and sturdy enough to stand up to extremes of weather.

Once you have designed and built your new home, however, you are still faced with the challenge of living in a space which is likely to be much smaller than a standard domestic home, as well as having a few physical and structural limitations.

In this book we will go through some of the important points to consider, such as:

  • Exterior decoration
  • Gardens, plants and roofs
  • Furniture
  • Making the most of limited space
  • Decluttering your possessions

Building your house is just the beginning. This book will help you turn your brand new container into a proper home.
