God You’re Ugly: Boy is you Ugly

by George Bailey

In my mind I have always been ugly. Even when I look back at old childhood photos and realize that I was kind of cute at times, I never felt that way. Somehow it was branded on my soul that everyone else was prettier than me, and thereby, I somehow concluded, inherently superior. I don’t know why I felt that way – only that I did.

It didn’t help that those anguishing suspicions about my hideousness found justification in the form of my personal tormentors. In other words, there has been a long string of people in my life that have reinforced my self-perceived disgustingness. On the other hand, despite their efforts in reminding me of my inherent inferiority, my repulsiveness was already and inexplicably a permanent part of my core essence. In other words, while it may have made them feel better over the years to remind me of their innate superiority, they were wasting their time – I already knew it. The question to me was never why people were born superior, it was how could I level life’s playing field?

Those feelings of worth most people are apparently born with have always been foreign to me. I am ironically likewise cursed,

however, with the desire to be perceived as at least adequate in the “looks” department – particularly in regards to females. I always yearned to be a part of the social dynamic, despite my limitations, and eventually concluded that some level of high achievement – by any means – could blind people to my hideousness.

Throughout my life, though suffering from temporary bouts of self-pity inherent to those born with my “looks”, I eventually came to embrace the bizarre way my insecurities manifested into the strange, unique path my life has taken. My feelings of worthlessness, ironically, have provided the means for my life having purpose and value. I now embrace the quirky, if not downright weird, path my life took. Only in retrospect, and reflection, am I now aware of how my self-perceived repulsiveness transformed my journey from average and boring to at least different.

My life has become the stuff of legends – legendarily lame that is – in the minds of most anyway. For those of you who see “lam-o” in my actions, I offer you redemption. In exchange for you reading about me, I gift you the personally redemptive power of joyful exuberance in knowing that you didn’t live my life!

In somewhat chronological order, after first describing the seminal events leading to this book, the memories forming the mangled mosaic of my deranged thoughts and deeds will be recounted. From the perspective of a mind operating amidst a thick cloud of profound insecurity and pathos, I offer you the re-telling of a life inspired by the power of “ugly”.

Susan’s Brother

by James Marinero

In 1957, at the age of 9, Susan’s brother was in an adult unit – a unit treating very seriously ill mental patients. In 1985, Susan’s brother took delivery of an Aston Martin DBS.

The intervening 28 years hold a remarkable story about a man who grew and prospered as a successful engineering professional, but started out as a dyslexic â??slow starter’, abused and unwanted by his parents and sister.

Set in a Middle England which is recovering from the war, damaged buildings and infrastructure have to be repaired, but also damage people and damaged lives.

This is based on a true history, a history that gives hope, a history that demonstrates how simple acts of kindness by friends and neighbours can help someone overcome tremendous handicaps, identity denial and family abuse to become a success both as a person and a parent.

There is also a message about those who learn to abuse as children and continue that abuse into adulthood with their own children, and also about those in the extended family who turn a blind eye out of a misplaced sense of family loyalty.

Several public personalities (some notorious), and Carl Jung, the eminent Swiss psychiatrist, are among those who briefly feature in the life of Susan’s brother.

This book has some dark moments, but it is a book written to uplift. As it was related to James, by Susan’s brother:

“I want this book to show that ordinary people, doing ordinary things, can help someone get through the most appalling difficulties. If it wasn’t for the Tolhursts, I wouldn’t be here today”

Working Class Hero

by Jim Burns

Tom Brokaw applied the term The Greatest Generation to those who “came of age during the Depression and the Second World War, and went on to build modern America – men and women whose everyday lives of duty, honor, achievement, and courage gave us the world we have today.”

Without detracting from the record of that generation, I want to draw attention to the preceding generation, the parents who raised these people and instilled in them the qualities and values so essential to their later performance. Those parents faced a major war in their youth, the First World War. With far less education than their children, they faced economic boom and bust, and made career adjustments through changing times. During the Great Depression, they continued to earn a livelihood and to “bring home the bacon” for the fledglings of the Greatest Generation. Many endured major career disruptions again with the onset of the Second World War, yet became too old, or had too many responsibilities, to enter new career fields that opened in the booming postwar years. Many past generations have made enormous contributions, so I will avoid superlatives and any claim to uniqueness. I will refer to this generation simply as A Stalwart Generation.

To represent this generation, I will focus on a man of working-class background whose diverse experience touched many aspects of that period’s history. His name was Jim. He lived from 1884 to 1954.

About the author –

Jim Burns is a retired geologist living in Waynesboro, Virginia. He is the father of three grown sons. After more than fifty years of marriage, his wife Jaquelin died in 2006.

His early career, mostly with the U.S. Geological Survey, was devoted to applications of earth sciences in solving military problems. His later career was in environmental geology, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Geological Survey. He retired as chief of the Survey’s office of environmental affairs.

He has written numerous articles, reports, and books on scientific and technical subjects. This is his second book aimed at a general audience. The first was an account of his experience during the Cold War on board a spy ship in the Arctic, titled The Cold Coasts.
