The Black Albatros

by Ron Eisele

Here is a mystery. During the course of our lives we sometimes encounter occurrences or situations that defy rational explanation. Some of us are quick to ascribe supernatural influence, others strive to apply reason and logic. `The Black Albatros’ is a short story based on such an incident. It was related to the author by a retired RAF Squadron Leader in the mid 1960’s who had served in the Great War. The fictional characters portrayed in `The Black Albatros’ will be familiar to readers who have read the author’s debut novel `1918 Blue Skies Aloft.’ The sequence of events are as narrated over fifty years ago.

by Robert Marshall Boyer

Before the terrorist attack in Charlotte (the Queen City), a future Lakota Indian chief, Alex Napayshni New Eagle, is born in South Dakota in 1919. More importantly, the name Alex means “Warrior” and the name Napayshni means “Courageous.”

In 1944, Alex becomes a paratrooper for the United States Army’s 82nd Airborne Division. He is based out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, United States.

A few months later, in the very early morning hours of June 6, 1944, Alex’s Army unit jumps out of a C-47 twin-engine airplane during the historic Battle of Normandy. However, the aircraft drops them on the German Army. He receives a few serious bullet wounds. At the same time, the Germans take out most of his unit.

Once on the ground, Alex goes to a hospital in a medevac vehicle. Due to his war injuries, he can’t reenlist. However, he has a desire to reenlist. After all is said and done, Alex will be honorably discharged as an Army Sergeant (SGT).

On December 5, 1963, the 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) becomes activated at Fort Bragg. At the same time, SGT Jerry Smith knows the Army history of Chief New Eagle. As a result, SGT Smith volunteers for the U.S. Army Special Forces.

After completing Special Forces training, SGT Smith becomes a Sergeant First Class (SFC). More importantly, he is assigned to the 3rd SFG (A).

In the mid-1960s, the 3rd SFG (A) is deployed to the Vietnam War. SFC Smith encounters a super warrior called a Knight Eagle in the Vietnam War. SFC Smith keeps quiet about what he saw. However, the Knight Eagle fights secretly with the allies for humanitarian freedom.

On September 11, 2001, Al-Qaeda bombs the United States. The United States Army Special Forces deploys to Afghanistan within weeks.

Five years later, another terrorist group bombs Downtown Charlotte, North Carolina, United States. The day of the bombing is April 8, 2006. It is the birthday of the late Chief New Eagle.

Days after the terrorist attack in Charlotte, a new superhero is born. His name is Brandon Newman. He becomes a Knight Eagle.

During the 7-hour battle, there is another encounter from the Knight Eagle, but it isn’t Brandon Newman. At the same time, there is radio chatter of a Native American taking out Al-Qaeda members. However no soldier, ally or foe, could make out the Indian. This person â?? this thing â?? fights against the Afghanistan terrorist group at night.

During the same time period, a new Iraqi terrorist group, Badiya Aswad Uf”uwan (Desert Black Snake), works with another terrorist group from North Carolina, United States. At the same time, a young man named Brandon Newman (Knight Eagle) joins the United States Army. He becomes a Ranger and a Green Beret. He fights terrorism.

First-hand narrative accounts take you back to December 7, 1941 into the heart of action!

Japan had succeeded in launching two waves of their attack planes on the island. They had come intending to launch a third wave but for some reason it was never launched. All planes returned to their aircraft carriers by 12:15 pm and began their trip homeward. However, the US military had no idea the attack was over. The threat of a full out invasion kept everyone, military and civilian on high alert for the remainder of the day and well into the night. The next day, President Roosevelt gave his speech to the country and effectively declared war on Japan. Isolationism was destroyed and the anger of the Americans served to propel them forward into war…

If you’re a World War 2 history buff , this is a book to challenge your knowledge.

“Get down! Everyone, get down!” Someone cried. I looked down the ladder but the entire mast below us was ablaze with orange and yellow flames greedily licking up the ship like a ravenous wolf. “We’ve got to get down! Get out of the way!”

“I can’t,” I cried.

“Get the hell out of the way!” One of the other crewmen pushed me aside and tried to race down the mast. It was as if he had no clue of the danger or the extent of the damage. Flames grabbed a hold of his legs pulling him into a crumpled heap on the deck below us. I looked around frantically. We couldn’t stay here! We were dead if we stayed. The roaring heat was all around us and sweat stung my eyes. We had to get off the mast.

“Everyone, get down now! Now!” Others snapped to life and climbed hastily down the mast through the flames. Scream after scream rent my ears and I saw them fall to the deck below. I don’t want to die! Oh God in heaven, I don’t want to die, but where could I jump. I could hardly see the water below me even though I knew it was there. It was my last chance to get away from the flames that were already peeling the skin on my hands. The mast was so hot I could feel my shoes melting. I looked at the others clinging to the mast and shuddered. I had to jump! I had to. I felt the ship rolling to her left.

I leaned back as far as I dared and then threw myself forward through the smoke. My heart flew into my mouth and I felt the space of air for several agonizing seconds before the shock of water and oil slammed into my helpless body. Only then did I remember what a subpar swimmer I was. My head pounded and I clawed with my legs and arms trying for all my life to stay afloat. I shook my head trying to clear my vision before pulling myself through the water away from the ship. My breath was already coming in gasps. There was no way I could get anywhere like this. I only saw the Arizona in front of me with her sinking decks almost level with the water. I seized hold trying to call for help, but no sound came out. I tried pulling myself up onto the ship but I couldn’t get a good grip.

It wasn’t until I saw John another crewmen from my division racing past that I found the voice to cry out. He looked back and saw me.

“Lee, what in God’s name!”

“Help, me please!” John grabbed hold of me and hastily pulled me aboard.

“The ship is sinking, Lee! She’s gone! You have to get to a lifeboat! We’ll all be dead if we don’t get off!” I stumbled to my feet and away from the encroaching flames. My mind beat crazed like in my head…
