The Primary Protocol (The Dossiers of Asset 108 Book 2)

by JM Guillen

Eldritch abominations are invading our world.

Only Michael Bishop and the Facility stand against them.

With none of his cadre at his side, Michael Bishop, Asset of the Facility, awakens in a labyrinth of forsaken darkness with faceless assassins in close pursuit. He has few memories and fewer weapons and is running for his life fighting against inhuman horrors from another world. It seems as if Asset 108will soon be dead, all without remembering his true nature.

Then things grow difficult.

Soon Michael and his allies are lost in a dark, forbidden city in a world where the stars are bent and strange. He is without any of his reality-twisting technology or upgraded neuralware and is pursued by mad fanatics, worshipers of the tentacled aberrations that plot against the nations of man.

Even this is not the greatest danger, however. There are twisted plots between the abominations, schemes of which Michael and his cadre are simply pawns on a vast board. Soon they will take part in an attack that will change the very fate of this entire twisted realm, all in exchange for a whispered oath: a promise of a way home, back to the Rational world.

But can the cadre trust the creatures they are bargaining with? Will the technology offered actually be capable of taking them home? And what of the mysterious lost Asset and his cryptic warnings?

In distant worlds beneath strange stars, promises are easily broken, especially ones made by inhuman foes.

A Myriad of Worlds…

This story is the second in the series, The Dossiers of Asset 108, regarding the adventures and trials of Michael Bishop, a man who does not know his nature. It is a story of a shadowed world, a world where creatures of outer darkness are hunted by a faceless organization, the Facility.

This series is itself a strand in The Paean of Sundered Dreams, is a multi-genre, universe-spanning array of tales with Lovecraftian themes.

Some of the strands of this work are science fiction, some fantasy, and some steampunk, but they share the same horrific universe. They weft and weave together, each leaving breadcrumbs of clues for the next story.

Each tale echoes a beating heart of darkness, cackling quietly in the shadows of existence.

These stories may be enjoyed as individual series or as part of the Paean in its proper order. If you are a reader who is only interested in Michael Bishop and his adventures, the next in that story is Aberrant Vectors.

If, on the other hand, you are the kind of reader who cannot rest until every secret is found, for whom genre is unimportant, and who will travel a wide and vast multiverse to learn things man was not meant to knowâ?¦

Welcome, wayward wanderer.

This was written for you.

A Grasping Darkness: The two first stories of Asset 108

by JM Guillen

The time is 1998.
The world is not what it seems.
An invasion is coming.

Michael Bishop is an Asset of the Facility– a job that comes with many strange perks. He is a man who never gets ill, who never pays taxes. He is effortlessly fit, and has a different woman every night of the week.

That is, when he is not on assignment.

When activated, Michael becomes Asset 108, a cyberpunk-enhanced human who stands against the strange darkness that lurks at the edge of our world.
Armed with equipment that most would find impossible to comprehend, he is sent on missions both strange and deadly. Each dossier pits him against irrational creatures and beings- most with the power to unravel his sanity, or reality itself. It’s never a simple job.

This job, however, is more complex than most. Mysterious unknown targets are fracturing reality, somewhere in the middle of the Mojave Desert.

The Facility has no other Assets in the area, and their telemetry is spotty at best. Without knowing what to expect, Bishop is activated, assigned to a cadre, and sent to the middle of nowhere.

What he finds there will lead him into a different world.

This cyberpunk collection is in a series called The Dossiers of Asset 108, and contains the stories Rationality Zero and The Primary Protocol. This series is itself the first strand in The Paean of Sundered Dreams, a multi-genre, universe-spanning array of tales with Lovecraftian themes.

These stories may be enjoyed as individual series, or as part of the Paean in its proper order. If you are a reader who is interested in The order that all these stories would be read in, at once, that order is as follows:

  • Rationality Zero
  • The Herald of Autumn
  • Collateral Damage
  • Handmaiden’s Fury
  • On the Matter of the Red Hand
  • The Primary Protocol
  • Regarding Oaths and the Whispering Flame
  • Slave of the Sky-Captain
  • The Wormwood Event

Coming in November 2015! “Aberrant Vectors.”

Slave of the Sky Captain (Legacy of the Archons Book 1)

    by JM Guillen

Generations ago, the Shroud fell beyond the Last City of Man.

Now as the Riftingwar rages, the Gloaming Twilight once again settles across an accursed world.

In the distant wilds of Cæstre, reality itself is unraveling and horrific abominations stalk the land. The nations of man stand against them but it is a hopeless cause.

Distant from the front, Ysabel never worried about much- except the bloodstorms that plagued her home and the abominations that dwelt within them. Fortunately for her, her father was a man who always had a secret plan. In this case, his plan was to gamble until he made enough money to steal them both away to the distant city of Teredon, the Last City of Man. There they would be safe from the gloaming darkness.

    Sometimes, plans go awry.

After making an impossible choice to sacrifice herself, Ysabel is carted away to be sold into a lifetime of servitude. She despairs, understanding the rest of her life may be spent as a slave for savage sky pirates and it seems as if there’s nothing she can do.

But this is just the beginning. The world is far stranger than Ysabel has guessed and her new owner, the enigmatic Captain Argent, has unexpected designs. He holds secrets that can save their benighted world, requiring that she become a living component in an alchemy that is older than recorded history.

When worshipers of ancient and faceless powers realize what Captain Argent plans, they execute a devastating attack and steal Ysabel away. Soon she is alone in the deep-ruins of her city, surrounded on all sides by tainted and mad cultists bent on mass destruction.

It seems as if she may never leave the city alive…

    A Myriad of Worlds…

This story is only one of the many paths into our bent and Irrational worlds, one which has others forthcoming. Here we begin a steampunk adventure that will stretch across a broken, archaic city, unveiling an ancient technology which may be the only hope against the Shroud and its fell servitors.

This tale is a flicker of light in the darkness.

    INTRODUCTION

Imagine that you are the driver of a sports car – a very fast but luxurious model. Let’s, say, for the purpose of this exercise, an Aston Martin – the DBS James Bond Special model, if you like. Now imagine that you are driving at a breakneck speed around a racetrack – a racetrack that is completely unknown to you. You are matched against competitors that are so close to you with regard to ambition and crucial expertise that you have little choice about dealing with anything else apart from keeping you and your beautiful vehicle under control. You see a vicious right-hand bend coming up and you are going too fast. Mirrors show cars to the left and right of you and both of them within two feet. They are matching your exact speed and every minute thought that you have. The bend is bellowing its way towards you like a thunderous, angry giant. You twitch the steering wheel and in the nick of time, you manage to carry out a magnificent swerve at an unbelievable speed and fire yourself through the angle to find yourself on the other side and slightly ahead of the competition. Now, accelerate – and sweat.

There, you see? You missed it completely.

At the exact moment that you saw the right-hand bend approaching, there was also a roadside sign showing a road joining in from the left at an angle that can only be described as stupid-o-clock. We shall call this the Lesser – Followed Road – and thank Robert Frost for the privilege of even seeing it while we are at it. At this juncture, it must be observed that it is a virtual impossibility to make that turn under these particular circumstances. Then, of course, that means that there is a finite possibility of making it – it just isn’t very likely.

Max Weissman made that turn. He held his father’s hand as he died and he saw the Lesser-Followed Road on the sign that was fleeing past him. No, of course he couldn’t make that excruciatingly awful angle. Instead, he did an about-face immediately after the right-hand bend and accelerated back through the oncoming racers.

You see, the first thing that Max learnt from his dying father was that the roadway wasn’t a one-way street, as he had always misunderstood it to be. The second thing that he learnt was how to allow himself to navigate the downstream traffic and then easily make the shallow right turn into Lesser-Followed Road. What followed astounded him in every way.

Max Weissman was the Oxford Physics Student that we have all waited for.

    Max Weissman invented Time Travel.

    Overthrown: The Great Dark

    by Judd Vowell

Ever since the Great Dark pushed the world into chaos, Gordon’s singular focus has been keeping his family alive. But survival is growing tougher by the day, just like the cancerous tumor wrapping itself around his wife Meg’s spine.

Meg is strong – she’s fought off the disease once before. It was over a year ago, when there were doctors and hospitals and pharmacies. Now those things are gone, along with so much else. And the battle inside her body is turning against her. Gordon knows that she won’t survive without the cancer medicine that saved her the first time. Medicine that’s in a distant and deserted city, out in the darkness.

He’s heard the stories of a dangerous new landscape, with fearless wild animals and bands of violent outliers. Yet Gordon has to try, even though the only allies he can enlist to help him are his 15-year-old twins, Jessica and Henry. And they may be too young to provide any help at all.

But what Gordon starts to see on their journey is that his kids are more gifted than he’s ever noticed. They’re clever and resourceful, adaptive and resilient. And as the three of them get closer to the city that holds the medicine, they find themselves in the midst of a new war. A war against the hackers who destroyed the world’s technological infrastructure and rebuilt it for their own design. And Gordon begins to realize that his children may be the only hope that civilization has left.
