Arm The Children

by Ronald Raubaugh

My dad is going to hurt my little sister Sarah.

And I don’t mean punch in the face or cut with a knife hurt either. I mean the kind of hurt that never ends. Right now she is a happy five-year-old little girl. The kind of little girl who can cheer you up just by looking at her. But one night my dad is going to get drunk and go to her room and Sarah will scream at him to stop but he won’t listen and when he is done the bright light will be gone from her eyes and it will never come back and Sarah will never be the same and it will be my fault because I promised that I wouldn’t let him hurt her.

I pinkie swore.

And you can’t break a pinkie swear.

I don’t know how to stop him from hurting her. But I know I’m going to try. And if I don’t stop him, I want Sarah to know I tried my best and I love her very, very much and I’m very, very sorry.

Not that it will matter much.

(* A previous version of this novel received a contract offer from HarperCollins in May 2009 which the author eventually refused to sign. *)

Dark Shadows: A Psychological Horror

by Toni Vallan

My name’s Ella Raimi.
Until last week, my life was pretty normal for a sixteen-year-old. Until I spent that awful night trapped in the janitor’s closet in utter darkness. Until the dreams began â?? suffocating, panic-filled dreams. My best friend Kyla stays with me, but the dreams still continue. And I wake each morning with cuts & burns on my skin. I don’t recall inflicting them.
And then there is the blood on my hands and my sheets when I wake up.
I’m afraid of myself.
I’m afraid I am a killer.

Clémentine’s Uncommon Scents

by Jocelyne Lebon

Have you ever been hijacked? By your nose, that is? Have you ever been, at a mere whiff, snatched and catapulted into a time of remembered bliss? Or remembered grief? What if your nose was a veritable time machine transporting and immersing you, mind, body and soul into a past long gone yet as exquisitely vivid as the present?

On the surface, there is nothing remarkable about Clémentine’s nose: it has only two nostrils and sits roughly in the middle of her face. Yet when it is discovered that the six-year old has in fact the nose of a bloodhound, it soon converts her into a force to be reckoned with in the small hamlet where she is growing up. Is she angel or beast? Her bizarre attribute garners her praise but also subjects her to taunts and insults, until a searing humiliation brings her ambivalence to a tipping point, and upon reaching puberty she makes a decision which will change the course of her life by a few latitudes. How she handles and resolves her strong ambivalence is developed in this olfactory odyssey, a sensuous tale with comedy, drama, and romance, drenched in fragrant magic realism.
