Marcel Proust: In Search of Lost Time [volumes 1 to 7] (Golden Deer Classics)

by Marcel Proust

In Search of Lost Time (French: Ã? la recherche du temps perdu)â?? previously also translated as Remembrance of Things Past, is a novel in seven volumes, written by Marcel Proust (1871-1922). It is considered to be his most prominent work, known both for its length and its theme of involuntary memory, the most famous example being the “episode of the madeleine” which occurs early in the first volume. It gained fame in English in translations by C. K. Scott Moncrieff and Terence Kilmartin as Remembrance of Things Past, but the title In Search of Lost Time, a literal rendering of the French, has gained usage since D. J. Enright adopted it for his revised translation published in 1992.

The novel began to take shape in 1909. Proust continued to work on it until his final illness in the autumn of 1922 forced him to break off. Proust established the structure early on, but even after volumes were initially finished he kept adding new material and edited one volume after another for publication. The last three of the seven volumes contain oversights and fragmentary or unpolished passages, as they existed only in draft form at the death of the author; the publication of these parts was overseen by his brother Robert.

Lonelyhearts Pawn Shop

by susan smith nash

These daily thoughts and predictions create an avant-garde pastiche, a “Tender Buttons” for the 21st century, that unites daily reflections, astrological predictions, visits to your local psychic or soothsayer, and a whimsical entrepreneurial woman.

Moreover, it is not an ordinary pawn shop, but one that provides low-interest micro-loans to woman-owned enterprises. You might say she’s an idealist. You could also say she’s curious about cultures, about finding out what makes people make meaning out of the random detritus of their lives. Her motto for living: Make It Happen. In buying Lonelyhearts Pawn Shop, she made something happen, even if it was not quite what she intended.

Screaming at the Storm: And Other Very Short Stories

by Robert Roy Britt

The water rises, pushes harder. Fingernails dig into a tiny crevice. Inching forward.

Britt packs his very short stories with pithy descriptions, terse dialogue and edgy little plots.

Screaming at the Storm will have you clinging by your fingernails. But not for long. The story is a superquick, rollicking read, like the others in this tiny collection from the author of the Eli Quinn mystery series.

If novels are dinner, wine and desert, consider this 99-cent gem a scrumptious little truffle.

Recuerdos del pasado (Spanish Edition)

by Vicente Pérez Rosales

The Lottery

by J. E. Abramson

A man on the edge of despair struggles for renewal in the face of lost time.

by J.B. Aspinall

Four novellas about hapless hunters and elusive quarries:

THE SEA: Two drinkers in a Scarborough bar consider the inexplicable dénouement of a love-affair forty years earlier. Masquerading as a detective-story, it is a poetic statement about love and an allegory of the relationship between artist and audience.

OLD LOVE’S DOMAIN: News of the death of Alison, last seen in Paris in 1968, takes Jeremy on a Hardyesque journey of nostalgia that ends surprisingly. A lament for the second half of the Twentieth Century by a despondent but unrepentant socialist.

IMAGERY OF DAY DESIRES: George dreams about a woman who has no place in his waking life: he lost his chance of her on a bus eighteen years earlier. His search for Jenny toys with the concept of alternative existences but basically this is a naturalistic study of delusion.

THE GIRL HE CHOSE: In the shambolic world of the future Precinct Frendlicop Kyriakos, investigating the deaths of two consumers of drug-induced fantasies at the Dream Palace, is compelled to undergo the perilous adventures himself to solve the case.

And When the Arguing’s Over…: Contemporary Plays

by Garry Crystal

And When the Arguing’s Overâ?¦where will you be and what will you have achieved?

People argue on a daily basis but conflicts are not always what they initially appear to be. Sometimes a little perception is needed to read between the lines in order to discover the truth.

Six plays covering themes such as following the herd and selling out at work. The desire to be noticed, fiction versus non-fiction, fact versus memory and the comforting lies we tell each other and ourselves to make life a little easier. And hope – because without hope, even misguided hope, what would be the point in arguing?

“The other thing about lying is that the liar is banking on two things. They are hoping that the person being lied to is gullible enough to believe, and it’s also not even that they think they are gullible, it’s that they know the person they are lying to well enough that they know the person won’t push it any further because they know the person they are lying to wants to believe the lie.” – The Elephant Frowned

Hecklers – a stand-up comedian is heckled on stage during a comedy festival leading to a debate on originality in art versus following the herd in order to obtain an audience.

Appraising – a depressed employee attends a work appraisal where a character defining question is asked – would you would remain in hell if the devil paid you enough?

The Elephant Frowned – a journalist interviews a film director and breaks through an idealized personality to uncover truth, lies and manipulation. But what is reality and what is fiction when everyone has an agenda?

Happilyâ?¦everâ?¦ – one person wants to get married, the other doesn’t. The eternal argument. Does love actually exist when marriage becomes a deal-breaker?

Algeciras – the morning after. Two strangers who have spent the night together spend the next morning trying to convince each other that further contact is and isn’t required.

The Seawall – a short meeting between two people, but what is this rendezvous actually about.

These plays are included in the anthology All of Us With Our Pointless Worries and Inconsequential Dramas

Cover photo courtesy of dollen

“Although these stories themes deal with the subject of arguing, this is not to say that these are angry, bitter tales. They are infused with a healthy dose of humor and wit that Crystal’s previous work is known for. It takes a lot of talent to be able to write fully realized stories using only dialogue.

In “Appraising”, the setting is a job interview. As you read on, you’re not quite clear exactly who these characters are. From the dialogue alone, you assume one character is a man, the other is a woman, but you aren’t sure which is which, and the realization creeps up on you, little by little, and just when you’re finally trying to come to grips with your own assumptions about gender, he deftly pulls the rug out from under you and offers another beautiful twist. That I will leave up to you to see after you read this wonderful story.”

In “Algecerias”, keeping with the theme of this collection, a young couple argue and you feel like you’re eavesdropping on an intimate moment in their relationship. The most interesting thing about this story to me is the fact that while it’s composed strictly of dialogue, you can see the setting: I imagine it being in the bedroom, sheets in disarray, each holding their own on their side of the bed, the imaginary barrier between them as they each try to make their point but to no avail. Anyone who’s been in a relationship will no doubt relate to this story but it’s the power of the language that virtually dictates the visuals that impressed me the most; and the great thing about such a story is that it will always be different for those who read it, most likely relating their own experience into the piece.” Julian Gall

Justin Therét’s Guide to a Better Life: a novel despite its title

by Karl Fandkin

Bored billionaire, Walter Hudgins, takes an elevator full of people hostage at his own hotel’s grand opening for a million dollars ransom of his own money. Every word in the prior sentence happens, pretty much by the third chapter, but that’s not what this story is about, although it has a major influence. This is a boy meets girl, boy does his best to impress girl, boy gets girl and, in an awkward post-coital moment, boy loses girl story. The boy, forty something Justin Therét, angeleno, cycling enthusiast, former advertising executive, lottery winner, divorcee and would be writer. The girl, Suzanne (Zany) Farmington, Chicagoan, recently kicked out of her apartment after watching her fiancee’s sex video, literary agent hosting a convention for on-line writers at Walter’s hotel.

Although things get explosive, literally when the police helicopter onto the Hotel Colossus’ roof, our focus remains on Justin’s attempts to win Suzanne. He guides her though a chaotic week in San Diego. Along the way they encounter dauntless paraplegic Marine wheelchair basketball players, Miss J’s soulful shoe store, JNY – a TV and Film comedy themed restaurant, The Girls – elite cyclists trying to wrest the Rosarito to Ensenada record from The Boys – elite and amateur cyclists lead by Big Joe Holzman, Tucker Grant – an Australian who was touring the world on his bicycle before Walter, inadvertently, blew it up (Tucker’s bicycle, not the world).

Excerpts from Justin’s book, the eponymously titled Justin Therét’s Guide to a Better Life, punctuate the action giving insights to Justin’s rather unusual approach to every situation. In the end, most major characters couple up, but who ends up with whom? To find out, you’ll need to read this madcap romantic comedy of misdirection, misunderstanding, miscalculation and, well, don’t miss it.

Muj und der Herzerlfresser von Kindberg: Ein Südbahn-Krimi (INSPEKTOR MUJ ERMITTELT) (German Edition)

by Christoph Wagner
