El largo viaje de La Roja es un libro donde podemos apreciar el pasado reciente de la selección española de fútbol. Un viaje por el tiempo a través de un país futbolero en el mejor sentido de la palabra.

El libro contiene nueve capítulos, uno por cada mundial. Desde Argentina en 1978 hasta Sudáfrica en 2010. Un largo y penoso periplo con final feliz en Johanesburgo.

Cada capítulo comienza con una entrevista hecha en la actualidad a uno de los protagonistas de cada mundial. Cardeñosa, Salinas, Camacho o Hierro recuerdan aquellos encuentros de la selección española que siempre se saldaban con la eliminación del campeonato. Hasta 2010. Aquellos días históricos de julio, cuando las calles de España, en un fenómeno social desconocido hasta entonces, se llenaron de gente alegre que festejó a La Roja porque al fin éramos Campeones del Mundo.

This is a personal account of a few enjoyable months spent one simmering summer aboard a small, live-in sports cruiser while exploring the Catalonian coastline. This journey was hardly a blue-water sailing adventure, but rather, an opportunity to race offshore past the magnificent Costas Brava and Dorada, see all of their lighthouses, mountains, beaches and ports from far out at sea, and to cruise inshore to explore whatever catches the eye.

Cruising can be invigorating if you are planing a small sports cruiser offshore at twenty knots, and that is half the fun. Yet though you may be in sight of land you may also be a few miles out to sea, where breakdowns and squalls occur when least expected, particularly along this coastline, and beware of the tramontanas. So it is important for all skippers and their crews to be experienced in the arts of boat-handling, navigation and pilotage, before they embark on such adventures in these climes.

A lighthearted read-and-complete silliness 3-in-1 short story in less than 10 000 words. (Think of it as an adult coloring-in exercise for the idle mind.)

It started during one of those boring never-ending commuting journeys shared with my publishing agent and lifelong friend Jan. Jan suggested an easy reading on-the-go detective lose-hanging piece to kill start-stop commuting time. Maybe a bit of light-hearted investigator reading fun that one could start and then put down with your train timetable and front door key just to be picked up again tomorrow morning. A who-done-it story or stories that I would begin in some detail and then allow it to fizzle out, never to finish, with only a vague catch-all author’s synopsis.

It sounded tempting; my publisher bought the idea and advanced Thirty Thousand Pounds. Not that I was in need of the money, of course not.

The only stipulation – it had to be less than 10 000 words.

Story 1: A Pair of Two’s.
