Your Daily Risks for Sudden Vision Loss

Choose which simple activity is the greatest risk to suddenly losing your vision: Standing close to a grinding wood chipper without safety glasses; looking directly into the sun; or hugging your cousin or their dog? You may be surprised to learn they’re all equally dangerous for sudden vision loss.
Low vision is the term used to refer to a visual impairment that is not correctable by surgery, pharmaceuticals, glasses or contact lenses. It often means partial sight, such as blurred vision, blind spots or tunnel vision, but also includes legal blindness.
What we don’t know can hurt us! A little-known side effect at the time, but now well advertised, the author lost vision, ischemia, in his right eye after taking his first Viagra. If you watch Viagra related commercials on television, you’ll see a warning about vision loss. There was no pain but he awoke in about two hours to discover a terrifying veil of darkness masking the vision in his right eye. Hoping for improvement he asked the optometrist’s his chances for recovery only to hear that it’s common to lose the vision in the other eye as well! To reduce the risk, he had better buy some safety glasses! The author thought that he needed to start researching how to protect his remaining vision. What he learned about our human vulnerability came as a surprise! There are many daily but avoidable risks that we humans are confronted with where prior knowledge could result in an early discovery as to the or even avoidance.
Don’t use Viagra? Well, don’t get too comfortable with your carefree lifestyle. Did you know that contact with a person having an outbreak of oral herpes becomes a risk to your vision? Yes, virgins and family members are at risk for oral herpes. Unfortunately, having contact nonsexual contact with a person having a non-noticeable outbreak of oral herpes is a prevalent cause of blindness in the United States. It can be transmitted by a touch or shared towel. I didn’t say STD or other genital herpes, I said oral herpes. Oral Herpes contains a virus that can spread into the eye but there are various ways to avoid the problem or at least secretly medical care to reduce the problem. Did you know that?
Don’t stop reading, there is more to the list. How about stress? Normally we think about ulcers or anxiety, but too much stress can lead to a bulge on the eye which if not treated can result in blindness. Lying in bed with your cell phone or computer up near your nose can result in vision loss from excessive blue light which is avoidable. Resisting sneezing too hard can leave you with retinal detachment, which is a medical emergency. Hugging your dog or cat, although very clean and fully inoculated, without awareness of environmental risks can result in avoidable blindness.
Pain is not required for you to lose your eyesight. Understanding the risks in this book may get you to medical help in time to save you from sudden vision loss.
