Silencing the Laughter of Goliath

by Doreen Mampani

Silencing the Laughter of Goliath are poems written by Doreen regarding handling criticism. There are certain circumstances that a person have no control of, for example we don’t choose who are mothers and fathers must be, we don’t choose what race we must be and we don’t choose our appearance. Women who fornicate as young girls then reject the children they bear as a result of such an act. The child cannot be humiliated for such an act. To this I wrote poems “Forbidden to talk, a mystery to unfold, she loved her not’.

The title is referring to how some people mock and belittle others. In the case of David, he silenced Goliath who belittled him by killing him which is what is done in war. In day to day life we also have to silence our enemies but not by killing. We silence them by not responding to their criticism, not succumbing to their influence. Remembering that “our battle is not against flesh and blood but against principalities, powers and rulers of darkness”.

Not claiming to be a super human, when I meet a homeless person I great him or her. I bear in mind that a dirty person, who has not have a bath for months or years has a soul that Lord Jesus Christ died for.

Some of the poems are about children rejected by their parents. I wrote these based on my personal experience of being rejected by my mother and father. There is nothing that I did that my mother ever approved, even during the time that I was invited to a local Radio station to speak on xenophobia. I accepted that I will never do anything good before her eyes. So in this case I know there are Arms opened wide of my Maker always ready to embrace.

Are you excited of your achievements, run to your Maker in thanks giving. Is your soul downcast, run to your Maker for solace. Are you in doubt, turn to Lord Jesus Christ for true peace and direction and some dosage of faith. Are you rejected, well there is plenty of unconditional love from our heavenly Father just go to Him now. Are you sad, well “the joy of the Lord is your strength” Are you in distress, lost a loved one, turn to the Lord He knows exactly how to comfort your heart. Is your soul pierced with hurting words, go to the Great Physician, Lord Jesus Christ.

Love in the Time of Dinosaurs

by Alexandria Constantinova Szeman

By Alexandria Constantinova Szeman (formerly writing as “Sherri”)
About Love in the Time of Dinosaurs (award-winning poems)

Love in the Time of Dinosaurs includes all Szeman’s non-Holocaust poetry from 1983-2010. Many of the poems begin with a narrator’s or character’s questioning his expectations of life versus the reality s/he encounters.
In the section Portrait of the Poet as a Woman, the poems, firmly grounded in everyday objects and people, examine marriage, children, and family relationships; eventually expanding the narrator’s or character’s view to include the universal human condition, especially that of women.

In “Portrait of the Poet as a Woman” and “A Cappella,” a new wife feels saddled with and rejected by the young children from her husband’s previous marriage(s), despite the fact that she actually loves them and desperately wants their love in return.

The narrators of all the family dramatic monologues speak poignantly of our desire for acceptance and love, of the fear of betrayal, of loneliness and isolation even when within a relationship, as well as of treasured moments of love, happiness, and desire.

Imaginative depictions of mythological, literary, and biblical characters’ lives frequently appear. In “Cain’s Lament,” the narrator, Cain, long in exile “in a land that is a good land but far from home” after having murdered his brother Abel, begins his lament against God in bewildered grief but ends in self-confident, righteous defiance, revealing the depth of the character only briefly presented in Genesis.

“Ahab’s Wife,” published almost thirty years before the best-selling novel of the same name, depicts the confusion, longing, and love of a young wife married to an older man whose obsession with hunting the great white whale that maimed his body is so powerful that it continually takes him away from her and their infant son.

The award-winning “Penelope to Ulysses, on their First Night Together after Twenty Years” is a plaintive exploration of how the long-abandoned Penelope, having fought off numerous suitors and preserved her chastity during the two-decades-long absence of her husband, might have actually felt about Ulysses’ return, had The Odyssey been written from a woman’s perspective rather than from a man’s.

Some characters who were mentioned in short stories in Szeman’s award-winning volume Naked, with Glasses appear in poems like “Eddie Madison and the Theory of Evolution,” where Eddie simply doesn’t understand why his wife, who’s returned to school as an adult, keeps comparing him to a dinosaur, “and not a very flattering one at that.”
Eddie’s best friend Auggie longs to get closer to God by looking for angels and demons in “Auggie Vernon and the Eclipse,” no matter what the personal consequences might be.

In the collection’s title poem “Love in the Time of Dinosaurs,” the disillusionment, anger, and pathos of Eddie Madison’s life as his marriage deteriorates is likened to the changes of the earth and its climate through long geological transformation, leading to an unexpected, startling conclusion.

Szeman’s themes are universal, encompassing the perspectives of men and women, adults and children, equally honestly. Though the line-breaks are often syllabic, and the stanzas formal, the language flows musically over the artificially imposed line-breaks. The poems’ stories and characters have generated a multitude of fans who claim that, “for the first time, [they] understand contemporary poetry.”
