Married to the Game: A Story of Love and Waiting

by Lydia Harris

“Married To The Game” is the debut novel from Lydia Harris. Lydia is best known for being wife to imprisoned entrepreneur Michael “Harry O” Harris. The vast majority of people learned of this couple due to the documentary in which Lydia executive produced “Welcome To Death Row.” Michael was one of the investors that helped to launch Death Row Records. Let me start off by saying that what I like the best about this book is that it has a real “tell it like it is” flavor to it. Being that it was published by a smaller publisher, there is not a lot of editor/publisher driven propaganda. You truly hear the authors voice in the words in the text.

On to the review, chronologically, the book is a little bit all over the place. For instance, the story of how Michael and Lydia met is near the end of the book and there were certain stories told within the book that I couldn’t place to a specific year. The book is not all about Death Row Records. Michael had a successful stage play and according to Lydia also played a role in the creation of Rap-A-Lot Records. The book is not all about “Michael” per se. Lydia has owned several businesses and she is successful in her own right.

It’s a story of a wife’s love for her husband despite a lengthy prison term. A lot of these urban fiction writers write these “down chick” novels but Lydia didn’t just talk the talk, she walked the walk as her husband has been in jail for well over a decade and their child was even conceived on a conjugal visit.
