Fixed: Dope sacks, dye packs, and the long welcome back

by Doug Piotter

Fixed is a darkly comedic memoir that spans my unsupervised youth, drug and alcohol addiction, bank robbery, life in prison and ultimately my release and re-entry into my life’s new and sober orbit.

I grew up with alcoholic parents trapped inside their own lonely skins, a painful childhood full of cold shoulders and broken furniture. I burst onto the drug scene at age eleven and thrived before slowly finding out that it wasn’t all that it was cracked up to be. With addiction taking over and dictating my every move, I tried to make sense of it all while gathering five unwanted felonies along the way.

At thirty-three, after a long string of bank robberies and my bad guy impersonation had run its course, I was brought back to life with the gift of prison and given the opportunity to experience a new childhood that I could have only imagined while growing up in Manville. Upon release, I learned that the universe is a kind and forgiving place, often strange and funny with plenty for everyone as long as I don’t forget where I came from.

The Frozen Trail

by Lisa Dayley

THE FROZEN TRAIL is a novella set in the American West. It is written in a simple, clear style, making it suitable for younger readers as well as adults.

In 1856 the Mormon pioneers trekked across the Great Plains in wagon trains and pulling handcarts to find a new home safe from persecution. This is the story of one 18-year-old young woman, Emma Girdlestone of the Willie Handcart Company, who faced starvation, frostbite, and death so she and her family could join their fellow Latter-day Saints in the Salt Lake Valley. This work of historical fiction is dedicated to the members of the Willie Handcart Company. These courageous pioneers displayed commitment and heroism in the face of unbelievably harsh and brutal conditions while en route to Zion. It is especially dedicated to Willie Handcart member, Emma Girdlestone, who left behind a legacy of bravery, fortitude, and faith; and who, 155 years later, managed to change the life of her great-great-granddaughter Lisa Dayley, the author of this book.

“A thrill to read, Lisa Dayley crafts a genuine pioneer story with just the right mix of fact and fiction. You’ll find this book hard to put down.” ~Jay Lenkersdorfer, newspaper publisher and columnist

SEPARATE LIVES: THE STORY OF MARY RIPPON

by Silvia Pettem

As a pioneer woman educator at the University of Colorado, in Boulder, Mary Rippon received wide acclaim for her teaching, but, in order to keep her job, she hid her husband and child behind a Victorian curtain of secrecy. Now, for the first time, “Separate Lives: The Story of Mary Rippon” reveals the conflicts between this extraordinary woman’s public and private lives.

The following true story follows Mary from the small midwestern farm where she was born to the great centers of culture in Europe. In January of 1878, after years of education in Germany, France, and Switzerland, the soft-spoken twenty-seven-year-old woman was welcomed at the newly opened University of Colorado in the small frontier town of Boulder. The growth of her lengthy career paralleled the growth of the university where she worked her way up from the first female faculty member to the university’s first female professor, eventually chairing the department of German language and literature.
Modest and unassuming, “Miss Rippon” taught in the male-dominated world of nineteenth century academia where she shielded her womanly emotions from the public eye. She was a professional woman and a mother in an era when these two roles could not be combined.
Hidden romance and familial responsibilities spanned two continents, and in an age of meager salaries and lengthy sea voyages, she managed to travel to Europe and back eight times. This biography does not tarnish “Miss Rippon’s” well-deserved reputation but uncovers the human side of a woman whose circumstances clashed with the mores of her times.
