Crime and Punishment (ReadOn Classics Editions)

by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

The two years before he wrote Crime and Punishment (1866) had been bad ones for Dostoyevsky. His wife and brother had died; the magazine he and his brother had started, Epoch, collapsed under its load of debt; and he was threatened with debtor’s prison. With an advance that he managed to wangle for an unwritten novel, he fled to Wiesbaden, hoping to win enough at the roulette table to get himself out of debt. Instead, he lost all his money; he had to pawn his clothes and beg friends for loans to pay his hotel bill and get back to Russia. One of his begging letters went to a magazine editor, asking for an advance on yet another unwritten novel â?? which he described as Crime and Punishment.
One of the supreme masterpieces of world literature, Crime and Punishment catapulted Dostoyevsky to the forefront of Russian writers and into the ranks of the world’s greatest novelists. Drawing upon experiences from his own prison days, the author recounts in feverish, compelling tones the story of Raskolnikov, an impoverished student tormented by his own nihilism, and the struggle between good and evil. Believing that he is above the law, and convinced that humanitarian ends justify vile means, he brutally murders an old woman â?? a pawnbroker whom he regards as “stupid, ailing, greedyâ?¦good for nothing.” Overwhelmed afterwards by feelings of guilt and terror, Raskolnikov confesses to the crime and goes to prison. There he realizes that happiness and redemption can only be achieved through suffering. Infused with forceful religious, social, and philosophical elements, the novel was an immediate success. This extraordinary, unforgettable work is reprinted here in the authoritative Constance Garnett translation.

Inspired by Art: Rise to Power (The David Chronicles Book 6)

by Uvi Poznansky

Inspired by Art: Rise to Power is a collection of art throughout the ages, around the story of David. This volume focuses on the decline of the House of Saul and David’s rise to the throne.

These amazing sculptures, paintings, etchings, and manuscripts inspired the author to write The David Chronicles, a series of three volumes, the first of which is Rise to Power, where she imagines the decline of the House of Saul and the rise of David. Besides being an artist and having worked as an architect, she taught art history, and this collection served as the basis for a reserch course analyzing the contrasts in viewpoints around the biblical story.

This collection is arranged not by artist, nor by artistic style or era, but rather by the story moment-by-moment, blow-by-blow, as imagined by various artists. Rembrandt, Ivan Schwebel, James Tissot, Rubens, William Blake, Gustave Doré, and Vallotton, to name but a few.

French Chic

The Ultimate Beginners Guide to French Style Secrets

French Chic: The Ultimate Beginners Guide to French Style Secrets takes a parable approach to a subject that is very important to the modern woman: Style

Contrary to popular belief, style is more about how a person feels and less about what they wear, which is a very “French” way of dressing. But how do we get there?

Join us as we follow Mademoiselle Alise through the process of creating a new look for herself. While all of us are unique, we are all quite similar as well so we can learn along with her the tips and tricks of French style such as:

Before You Dress
What we wear before we dress is as important as the final accessory. What happens before all those wonderful garments is far more important than the garments themselves. Let’s tag along as Alise learns a valuable lesson about “first things first”.

Where Do I Begin
When you know where you want to go but you don’t know how to get there, where do you start? Alise understands the most important part of fashion now and we will follow her lead as she chooses the style that fits her best.

So Many Choices
Alise is learning what works best for her but in each style there are so many choices. How will she choose? How will she know she has made the right choice? How will we?

Don’t Break the Bank
Alise is “reinventing” herself. Like many of us, she is starting over and wants to do it “right” this time. While her style dreams are sky high, her budget is bargain basement. How will she manage to buy what she needs without breaking the bank?

Just Before You Go
Alise has all the clothing she needs but feels her look is somehow incomplete. What is missing might surprise you. As Alise is walking out the door, she remembers a key piece of advice and takes one more important step in her new French Style fashion makeover.

La Vie Est Belle â?¦
Life is good. When we feel good, we are more beautiful no matter what style of clothing we choose, but when we choose the style that fits our life best that makes feeling beautiful easier.

Confidence is one of the most alluring things a woman can wear.

Body Language

The actions our body takes without our even thinking about it are very telling indeed and this is precisely why we need to understand what it is and how we can use it to our benefit.

What this book CAN doâ?¦

Understanding how to read and give non-verbal cues is an important part of communication. We do it automatically without even knowing that we are so understanding is the key word.

The information in this book can help you to understand how your own body language affects others and your own psyche and decide if you are sending the message you want to send.
