THE MARY LOUISE SERIES (Mystery & Detective Books for Children): The Adventures of a Girl Detective on a Quest to Solve a Mystery

by L. Frank Baum

The Mary Louise Series is a collection of four novels concerned with adolescent girl detectives written under the pseudonym Edith Van Dyne. The series began with Mary Louise, originally written as a tribute to Baum’s favorite sister, Mary Louise Baum Brewster. She is a fifteen-year-old girl with unusual maturity (though the other girls in her boarding school find her somewhat priggish). She is suddenly confronted with the fact that her beloved grandfather is suspected of no less a crime than treason against the United Statesâ?¦ The second book, Mary Louise in the Country, involves the struggle for Irish independence from Britain. Mary Louise and the Liberty Girls is concerned with the strong anti-German sentiments in the United States during World War I. L. Frank Baum (1856-1919) was an American author chiefly known for his children’s books. Too Old for the Buzz Cut

by Chris O’Brien

Follow one man’s borderline epic journey to find one borderline simple haircut.

The main character has been getting buzz cuts since kindergarten and it’s gotten to the point where his hair doesn’t do anything else. It just grows straight up, like a human Chia pet.

But now, in his late 20’s, it’s getting harder and harder to find just a regular ol barbershop to do the cut. Places are either too fancy or too extreme. Is it time to go with a trendy look made popular by Justin Bieber? Is it time to just wear a hat? Or is it time to go into one more barbershop at the end of the street.

Note – This is a short story. About 4,000 words. I’m calling it a Chicken Nugget because it’s too long for a blog but too short for a book. And, just like a buzz cut, it’s short and inexpensive. Give it a try!

UNCLE ABNER, MASTER OF MYSTERIES: 18 Detective Tales in One Volume: The Doomdorf Mystery, The Wrong Hand, The Angel of the Lord, An Act of God, The Treasure … The Hidden Law, The Riddle & many more

by Melville Davisson Post

Uncle Abner, the mystery solving West Virginian backwoodsman, is the best-known literary creation of Melville Davisson Post. Uncle Abner solved the mysteries that confronted him in a backwoods West Virginia community, immediately prior to the American Civil War and before the infant nation had any proper police system. He had two great attributes for his self-imposed task: a profound knowledge of and love for the Bible, and a keen observation of human actions. One example of Uncle Abner’s keen deductive skills is his showing a deaf man had not written a document, because a word in it was phonetically misspelt. The first one of these tales, “The Angel of the Lord”, is perhaps the very first work in the historical mystery genre. Melville Davisson Post (1869-1930) was an American author, born in West Virginia. Although his name is not immediately familiar to those outside of specialist circles many collections of detective fiction include works by him. Post’s best-known character is the mystery solving, justice dispensing West Virginian backwoodsman, Uncle Abner. Table of Contents: The Doomdorf Mystery The Wrong Hand The Angel of the Lord An Act of God The Treasure Hunter The House of the Dead Man A Twilight Adventure The Age of Miracles The Tenth Commandment The Devil’s Tools The Hidden Law The Riddle The Straw Man The Mystery of Chance The Concealed Path The Edge of the Shadow The Adopted Daughter Naboth’s Vineyard

The Monkey King: A Superhero Tale of China, Retold from The Journey to the West (Ancient Fantasy)

by Aaron Shepard

If you think Superman or Spiderman has been around a long time, think about Monkey. He has been China’s favorite superhero for at least five centuries. He’s amazingly strong, he can fly, and he has a few tricks those other superheroes never heard of. And he’s always ready to do battle with demons, dragons — sometimes even the gods.  Monkey stars in The Journey to the West, an epic comic fantasy from the sixteenth century. The part retold here is about Monkey’s origin and early career — and the one time he didn’t come out on top.  For ages 10 and up. Not illustrated! ///////////////////////////////////////////////// Aaron Shepard is the award-winning author of “The Baker’s Dozen,” “The Sea King’s Daughter,” “Lady White Snake,” and many more children’s books. What is left to hope and strive for? What can be higher than a king?”  “Your Majesty,” said the gibbon carefully, “we have ever been grateful for that time four centuries ago when you hatched from the stone, wandered into our midst, and found for us this hidden cave behind the waterfall. We made you our king as the greatest honor we could bestow. Still, I must tell you that kings are not the highest of beings.”  “They’re not?” said the Monkey King.  “No, Your Majesty. Above them are gods, who dwell in Heaven and govern Earth. Then there are Immortals, who have gained great powers and live forever. And finally there are Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, who have conquered illusion and escaped rebirth.”  “Wonderful!” cried the Monkey King. “Maybe I can become all three!” He considered a moment, then said, “I think I’ll start with the Immortals. I’ll search the earth till I’ve found one, then learn to become one myself!”
