I was numb to my emotions because I had drowned them out by self-medicating with drugs, alcohol, food, and fantasies about a romantic prince coming to rescue me. Yet these did little to fix my problems. My passion for life didn’t exist; I couldn’t see beauty in anything. I found normal activities boring, it was like I was living in a completely different world, a world of my own.

Everyone can experience depression for a shorter period of time due to grief or loss, but the depression I am talking about lasts for years and we often don’t know why we have it or how to live a life free from its clutches. As a qualified counselor and a person who lived a life of depression for 17 years, I have been able to learn why I suffered with depression and strategies to live a depression free life.
