The Invisible Hand of the Market: The Theory of Moral Sentiments + The Wealth of Nations (2 Pioneering Studies of Capitalism)

by Adam Smith

This carefully crafted ebook: “The Invisible Hand of the Market: The Theory of Moral Sentiments + The Wealth of Nations (2 Pioneering Studies of Capitalism)” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The invisible hand of the market is a metaphor conceived by Adam Smith to describe the self-regulating behavior of the marketplace. The exact phrase is used just three times in Smith’s writings, but has come to capture his important claim that individuals’ efforts to maximize their own gains in a free market benefits society, even if the ambitious have no benevolent intentions. Smith came up with the two meanings of the phrase from Richard Cantillon who developed both economic applications in his model of the isolated estate. He first introduced the concept in The Theory of Moral Sentiments, written in 1759. In this work, however, the idea of the market is not discussed, and the word “capitalism” is never used. By the time he wrote The Wealth of Nations in 1776, Smith had studied the economic models of the French Physiocrats for many years, and in this work the invisible hand is more directly linked to the concept of the market: specifically that it is competition between buyers and sellers that channels the profit motive of individuals on both sides of the transaction such that improved products are produced and at lower costs.

Baby Tony’s Shoebox

by Antonio D. Barnes

In this book, a variety of unique sketches have been resurrected from an old childhood shoebox and used to convey the nature of the relationship between Time, Self-Reference, and the subjective experience known of The PRESENT.

Utilizing the indispensable freedom of the imagination, these images methodically evolve to illustrate that THREE is the irreducible form of all things conditional and its motion may be imagined as Time, Reason, and among other things, the interdependence of Opposites.

Subsequent images further reveal that by annihilating the three “irreducible objects of mind” Time, Self-Reference, and all that is conditional is annihilated along with it leaving the deeper, subjective experience of what has been called The PRESENT.

Luminous Drifting: Reflections on the Dream of Life

by Storm Khandro Moon

This is a book of 36 bite sized essays gathered over a quarter century of Luminous Drifting, the name I give to my somewhat eclectic spiritual wanderings. They express my thoughts and insights into the nature of consciousness and being human. Musings on questions such as; â??What is consciousness?’, â??Is there a deeper level to being than our experience of selfhood?’, â??Does social media mirror the way our minds are organized?’, â??Why does it feel like we have been here forever, even though we are limited by birth and death?’, â??How do we connect to nature and totems in our industrialised world?’, and â??What is the big picture and how do we fit in?’

The musings, dreams and insights are gathered into two sections. The first looks at the nature of consciousness and draws on Buddhist concepts of the unborn nature, the ungraspable backdrop of reality. It explores classic Buddhist teachings such as the Surangama Sutra, the Diamond Sutra, the Heart Sutra, and the Five Ranks of Tozan. The second section looks at how our minds are organized and considers concepts such as karma, rebirth and the how our complex mental processes give rise to a sense of self. It ponders the nature of reality, dreams, and the individual self, asking the question â??Who are we really?’

by Friedrich Nietzsche

The Collected Political Works: Leviathan + De Cive (On the Citizen) + The Elements of Law + Behemoth, or The Long Parliament

by Thomas Hobbes

This carefully crafted ebook: “The Collected Political Works: Leviathan + De Cive (On the Citizen) + The Elements of Law + Behemoth, or The Long Parliament ” contains 4 books in one volume and is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The Collected Political Works, written by Thomas Hobbes, described his views on how humans could thrive in harmony while avoiding the perils and fear of societal conflict. His experience during a time of upheaval in England influenced his thoughts, which he captured in The Elements of Law , De Cive (On the Citizen), Behemoth, or The Long Parliament and his most famous work, Leviathan. Leviathan, published in 1651, concerns the structure of society and legitimate government, and is regarded as one of the earliest and most influential examples of social contract theory. Written during the English Civil War (1642-1651), Leviathan argues for a social contract and rule by an absolute sovereign. Hobbes wrote that civil war and situations identified with a state of nature and the famous motto Bellum omnium contra omnes (“the war of all against all”) could only be averted by strong central government. De Cive (‘On the citizen’) was Hobbes’s first published book of political philosophy.

Toutes les Oeuvres Majeures d’Aristote (French Edition)

by Aristote

Max Webers Protestantismus-Kapitalismus-These. Ein kritisch affirmatives Exzerpt (German Edition)

by Dalibor Truhlar

The Scarlet Peacock

by David Field

He was the son of an Ipswich butcher, but he was no ordinary boy.

His precocious intellect earned him a degree from Oxford at the unheard of age of fifteen, and his assumption of holy orders was to have an indelible impact on the status of the Church of Rome in England.

Thomas Wolsey first entered the royal service as chaplain to the ageing Henry VII, and stayed on as the first choice counsellor of his heir, Henry VIII.

Under royal patronage he rose to be Chancellor of England, Archbishop of York, and Papal legate for life.

But his love of flamboyant display, and his acquisition of ostentatious wealth, were anathema to the old nobility who resented such success by a mere commoner. Chief among these was his old boyhood enemy Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk, who had a potent weapon in his arsenal.

Her name was Anne Boleyn.

Wolsey’s inability to secure the annulment of Henry’s marriage to Katherine of Aragon was the breach in the wall through which Norfolk and his faction poured poison into Henry’s ear.

Wolsey was stripped of most of his offices and retreated in disgrace on a northern pilgrimage from which he was destined not to return alive.

No-one was left to mourn his passing other than his loyal protégé Thomas Cromwell, who vowed revenge on the woman who had been the primary cause of the downfall of one of the most able clergymen and ambassadors that England would ever know.

This is his story – the highs, the lows, and the treacheries of life at the court of one of England’s most colourful monarchs, seen through the eyes of one of its most tragic victims.

Praise for David Field

“Recommended for fans of The Tudors and Wolf Hall” – Richard Foreman

David Field was born and educated in Nottingham, and it was at Nottingham High School that he first acquired his love of the history, and language, of England, which he has over the years combined in a series of historical novels. He currently resides with his wife in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia.

From the Author

‘Cardinal Wolsey’ is a name familiar to most people.  But who was thereal person under the red soutane with matching skullcap?  The record tells us that he was overweight, that he was vainglorious, and that he sired two children by his live-inmistress.  But unless you visit one of his architecturallegacies (e.g. Hampton Court or York Palace, which is better known today as’Whitehall’), where a guide book might just offer you a fuller picture, youwon’t get beyond the ‘everybody knows’ version of his life in the schooltextbooks, and you’ll come away vaguely aware that he earned his come-uppance byfailing to acquire for Henry VIII the dissolution of his marriage to Katherineof Aragon.

But look more carefully at the world thatWolsey occupied, and there was clearly more to it than that.  He was a commoner in a society of fadingnobility, and he was as welcome as a condom salesman in a convent to those whohad been raised to believe that the Gold Lotto of their birth entitled them toa First Division prize.

Chief amongthose who resented Wolsey’s success wasThomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk, uncle and key-holder to the Boleyn familywhorehouse, and Wolsey ‘s real mistake was in failing to appreciate how seriously he was getting upsome blue-blooded noses.

I hope youenjoy ‘The Scarlet Peacock’.  Whether youdo or you don’t, the next volume off my groaning manuscript shelf is likely tobe ‘The Flowering of the Tudor Rose’, which examines in more detail the life of the original Tudor,Henry VII, which has been little considered by historical novelists.  Until now.

Under the Blood Moon (The Stargazers Trilogy Book 1)

by Summer Lee

Blood moons. An unlikely messenger. Is it the end of days?

Eric has a giftâ??a gift of premonition and a supernatural connection to the blood moon. As well as the physical signs of the timesâ??extreme weather, violent earthquakes and moreâ??what Eric sees in his prophetic dreams may be warnings that God’s plans for Israel are coming to fruition.

Eric’s sister, Sybil, believes he is a messenger to the world and that something big is coming. And it’s something bad.

Dr. Caladasian is the head of research at the Dream Institute in Seattle, Washington. He’s a scientist who refuses to dabble in pseudoscience, but he does have a way to record people’s dreams.

Torn between her loyalty to her brother and her desire to view his dreams, Sybil makes Eric into Dr. Caladasian’s unwitting research subject. Astounded by what they see on the video of Eric’s dream, Sybil and Dr. Caladasian are invited to a panel where they meet Solomon Dancer, a Messianic Jew with knowledge about the Blood Moonsâ??their meanings, and the events as they relate to the Jewish calendar. Solomon believes that Eric’s dreams are a message to the Jews.

Someone else is interested in Eric’s blood moon dreams, too. Separated from Sybil during the chaos of a disaster, Eric is kidnapped by someone who wants him to track the blood moons and aims to learn his secretsâ??the kidnapper is having the same types of dreams.

Now parted, the siblings pray for each other that they may be spared in the coming Battle of Armageddon. There is only one way to save themselvesâ??their acceptance of Jesus as their Savior.

Traumatic events are occurring, but is Eric really the chosen one to tell the world that the end of days is upon them? From the Bible and from Eric’s prophetic dreams, they know what’s going to happen. The big question is when. Will any of them survive the coming end of days that God’s Word promised would wipe out most of the human race?

UNDER THE BLOOD MOON is a novel about the impending end times on Earth by acclaimed Christian author Summer Lee.

There is endless wisdom in the medicinal practices of ancient civilizations. People who didn’t have the opportunity to rely on modern technology were not capable of the same chances at longevity and health that we are in modern times. However, it is important to remember that the drugs we are using now are still in their infancy, and may come with more problems than solutions in some cases.

Because of this, it is always helpful to remember what our ancient forefathers were able to discover about the natural world of medicine. Before humanity
was able to rely on technological advances, we had to rely on more natural solutions to our body’s natural problems, and these generally came by way of plants.

The medicinal practices of ancient Chinese and ancient Indian peoples are still widely used and respected today. They have the longest standing records of medical plants and their uses and properties, and have been looked to for thousands of years to treat and cure medical ailments of all kinds. This wisdom is becoming more and more important as we are able to recognize more and more the body as a machine whose natural state is balance, and when this balance is off, that’s where the problems begin to arise.

Dead & Alive Raven (Short Story 2)

by I.J. Smith

Dead & Alive Outbreak, Raven survived. Now this is the next chapter in her story.

The man who beckons

by Ryana Davidson

“We do not know of their location,” Celeborn interjected. “To try and locate them with magic could potentially put the search party in danger at the present. Saruman is in alliance
with the Enemy now, and any attempts to recreate his work could trigger disaster for all involved.”

Flashes of rage

by Emma Foster

I laughed as Gwaine twirled me around the dance floor, my green dress swooshing with the movement as Arthur and Gwen danced past us. My eyes went over Gwaine’s shoulder and landed on Merlin who was sitting at the table and talking to Gaius. He had been allowed to eat with the nobles since the feast was in honour of him. Apparently saving the King’s ward was a cause for a huge celebration. The song finished and Gwaine bowed to me as I curtsied in response.

Clouds of Tyranny

by J. R. Pond

In the year 2264, a meteor strikes Earth with such force that it nearly eliminates all living inhabitants. All technology is lost within the rubble of the planet’s destruction, wiping our slate clean. After over 250 years, the planet begins to resemble a vague shadow of it’s former self which now embodies that of 1000 years into the past.
Currently, the eastern area of the world is in turmoil at the hands of a tyrannical government known simply as the Empire. An Empire of murderers, rapists, thieves, and corrupt politics. After years of suffering under the rule of the imperials a new light begins to shine through the black clouds of hatred: a resistance known to the people as “The Returners.”

Sentients in the Maze: Book 2 Symbiont Wars (Symbiont Wars Universe)

by Chogan Swan

Sentients in the Maze

Book 2 in the Symbiont Wars Universe – a struggle across generations, worlds and souls.

When Tiana awakens from unexpected hibernation, she discovers over one hundred years have passed since her last memory. She’s on Earth in 2016. Nowâ??a century behind her parasitic foesâ??she must find and destroy them or her adopted world will become the next niiaH charnel pit.

Who is Jonah Galt?

In Jonah’s dystopian world, the government doesn’t use barbarian warriors battling in the arena to pacify the masses anymore. Instead, they hold elections for modern day gladiators called politicians who thrive on hype and controlled media coverage to make the public think things will change, though the only thing that changes is the rich get richer no matter which party gets into office.
The aristocrats have learned to disguise robbery, exploitation and the new rise of serfdom by using controlled financial markets and crony corporations.
Children don’t work in factories anymore, instead they attend institutions where they are conditioned to avoid critical thinking.
Instead, they learn just enough to make a bit of money so they can buy the mind-numbing products the company stores provide and accept being powerless and poor.
Outlaws, bullies and thugs are common, but many of them find camouflage in corporate suits or blue uniforms and badges that provide them the power to rob or terrorize the homeless, the poor minorities and anyone else who gets in their way.
Resources are running out, but the elite only care about power and wealth. Though they’ve learned to ‘donate’ in a way that makes them seem benevolent in media coverage which they can purchase by parting with a few tax-deductible pennies on the dollar from the money they rake in.
The frustrating thing for Jonah is that he IS a critical thinker, a scientistâ??expert in Systems Thinking with graduate degrees in Business, Engineering and Finance.
He’s developing a disruptive business model that could peacefully revolutionize society using existing science, technology and information, but it’s going to take a lot more than a village to make it work.
You can be sure the aristos don’t want their world to change.
As if that wasn’t enough of a challenge, when a beautiful woman picks him up at his favorite bar while he’s on the rebound, he discovers the Earth has been invaded by aliens who also have a plot to rule the world.
Oh yesâ?¦, and she’s an alien too.
Yes…. it is, in fact, an alien invasion of Earth.
Tiana is a symbiont humanoid warrior who has pursued the parasite niiaH remnant across the galactic core to Earth.
She made the first contact alien encounter with the humans on Earth at the turn of the 19th century and she still hasn’t found the niiaH. It’s a big planet.
But she knows they’re still here. She’s found the signs. She needs Jonah’s help, and Jonah sure as hell needs hers!

This continuation of the Symbiont Wars Universe features:

First contact alien encounters

Alien conquest

Alien invasion

A strong female lead

and war on parasitic tyranny in all forms

Sky Raiders

by Michelle Diener

When the people of Barit first saw the silver glint of sky craft, they felt awe. Then awe turned to fear. And they found a name for the mysterious newcomers. Sky raiders.

Garek’s one year of duty as a guard walking the walls of Garamundo was extended to two when the sky raiders appeared. Two long years away from home and his lover, Taya. When he finally returns, the town is empty. While Garek was protecting Garamundo, the sky raiders were taking their victims from his hometown.

Taya can’t bear looking into the night sky. All she can see is Barit, her home planet. Impossibly, the sky raiders have brought her and their other victims to Shadow, the planet that shadows her own, and looking up makes her aware of everything she’s lost. Garek is out there somewhere. She knows he’ll look, but he’ll never find her.

She and the other captives have to find a way to escape. Without the food and clothes the sky raiders bring them from their raids on Barit, they’ll starve on the almost barren wastes of Shadow. And when they’ve given the sky raiders enough of what they want, that’s exactly what the sky raiders will leave them to do.

What Taya doesn’t realize is she’ll have some help with her plan. Because Garek isn’t giving up on finding her. And he’s even more resourceful than she could ever have imagined.

Nothing is going to keep him from Taya. Not even space itself.

Death is not abandoned

by Alan Dutton

Arthur made his way alone through the tunnels which Morgana’s slaves had dug beneath Ismere, ignoring the itch caused by the rough unfamiliar fabric of the borrowed Saxon garments. Passageways branched off in every direction and Arthur wondered which way his idiot servant had gone when he chased off after a dragon. Torches lit the rough-hewn passages but the ground was too rocky to determine where either the dragon or the fool chasing it had gone.

by Emma Foster

After a second of debating, she realized that this was something she couldn’t stop. This was something she could not go back on. So she set the weird device in the cup holder of the car and began to drive.

1914, A Prelude to War, Book One (1914, The Unfinished Painting Trilogy)

by Gary Coatoam

Abounding in intrigue, action and romance, “1914, A Prelude to War” is Part I of an historical fiction series centered on the First World War. Commemorating the Centennial of the First World War, this novel combines a gripping story with a scrutinizing look at the causes and events of “the war to end all wars.”

Scores of novels have been written about World War I prior to the release of official government documents, and the stories in those novels have become accepted as historical fact. For instance readers were asked to believe that it was merely a “punctilious admiralty clerk” who “mistakenly sent out the telegram to the Mediterranean Fleet,” with the premature announcement of war that resulted in Turkey joining the war on Germany’s side, thereby prolonging the war for years and eventually leading to the downfall of Russia and the inception of communism in that country.

“1914, A Prelude to War” relies on information newly gleaned from previously unreleased documents in the British National Archives; and, this romantic war novel presents a not so fictional alternative historical depiction of events leading to the First World War.

Recruited into MI6, the British Intelligence Service, Michael Adler a United States citizen finds himself in a conflicted romantic entanglement with Claire Jaurés, a self-proclaimed French pacifist and socialist. His love for the young French woman is at odds with his devotion to duty. Adler agonizes over the possibility that his espionage activities may actually be fueling an impending war in Europe.
Adler’s overseas assignment brings him into direct contact with many notable historical figures including Winston Churchill, Sir Edward Grey, Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, Rasputin the Mad Monk, and French journalist Jean Jaurés. Meanwhile behind the scenes, conspiratorial political and corporate schemes are being hatched by the likes of JP Morgan, JD Rockefeller, Colonel Edward Mandell House and President Woodrow Wilson.

Beckoning back to the centennial of the Great War, the reader is transported back to a time when in the words of Theodore Roosevelt, “Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people.”

Though this novel is a work of fiction, the reader will be enlightened by an array of historical facts relative to the time period including dress, culture, industrial innovations and political exploitations. “1914, A Prelude to War” is the first book in this series of romantic historical fiction novels of the First World War, and is free to the reader. This novel is an independent story and can be read alone, or it may be enjoyed with subsequent books in the series.

The world is beyond

by Nikita Bubnov

In rural Ontario, the topic of ‘the weather’ has a time honored place of importance in conversation making among farms, which is why it is only fitting that we begin our story by
discussing said topic. After all, it does all begin on a small farm…and the weather…

Our spoiled souls

by Nelly Fraser

Arthur and Merlin had slept for days in the physician’s chambers. Neither of them had woken up much over the course of a week or two. Gaius was sure to make sure that they were properly medicated and, when they weren’t dead as a rock, Gwen and the knights would visit them for comfort.

Synbat (The Green Berets Book 3)

Kirkus Reviews. “Action packed entertainment. An atavistic milieu plausibly conjured up by Mayer.”

The Top Secret research is conducted at a lab in the deep woods of western Tennessee, under the Pentagon’s Black Budget. But the subjects of the experiment escape. The Synbats are now roaming the countryside, acting out what they were designed to do: kill.

Riley and his team are called in for ‘damage control.’ Easier said than done. They follow the deadly trail to Chicago, where long abandoned tunnels are a lair for the Synbats to do what could well spell the end of mankind: procreate at incredible speed. Counteract: Book One of the Resistance Series

by Tracy Lawson

Check out the Special Deals on Counteract, Resist, and Ignite July 17-21 to celebrate the launch of Revolt: Book Four of the Resistance Series–the explosive conclusion to this award-winning series!

“So, this series that I’ve been reading since the beginning is over. What’s a girl to do? Restart from Book One, of course!” –Devon Duran, Top Amazon Reviewer

“Usually I can tell within the first 100 pages how a story is going to end. [Counteract] had me surprised around every corner. Lawson is going to be one of those authors to watch in the near future for sure.” –Brian’s Review Blog

Who do you trust when your world unravels and everything you believed is a lie?

For the past fifteen years, The Office of Civilian Safety and Defense has guarded the public against the rampant threat of terrorism. Teenagers Tommy and Careen have never known life without Civilian Restrictions. For them, there’s no social media. No one is allowed to gather in public places or attend concerts or sporting events. Only a small, select group of adults have driving privileges, but it’s a small price to pay for safety.

Now a new, more deadly, terrorist threat looms: airborne chemical weapons that can be activated without warning. The OCSD is ready with an antidote to counteract the effects of the toxins. Three drops a day is all it takes. It’s a small price to pay for health.

The day the disaster sirens signal the dreaded attack, Tommy shares his last dose with Careen, even though doing so might hasten his death. It’s a small price to pay for a friend.Follow Tommy and Careen as they uncover a web of lies and deceit reaching to the highest levels of the United States government and join an underground resistance group that’s determined to expose the truth.

“Counteract is a novel for our times, but with a decidedly different plot twist. Most dystopian thrillers focus on the devastating consequences of the unleashed virus or poison on society, community, and the individual. They become character studies of the protagonists and antagonists.

“Tracy Lawson’s novel asks an even more disturbing question–what if the real culprit was someone or something we trusted? I thought The Hunger Games might be the Millennial generation’s version of George Orwell’s 1984. Now, I think Counteract and the Resistance Series are more primed to take that spot.”–SR Staley, author of St. Nic, Inc., and the Tortuga Bay series.

She also discovers we are not alone through contact with two other human races, whose visionary mission is to help us transform our world beyond the control of greedy corporations and their secret conspiracy to control the government and our progress into a higher level of technology and civilization.

This science fiction thriller is not your ordinary alien invasion fantasy. The aliens are not monsters, but intelligent beings with an undisclosed agenda. This conflict is going to be long and hard. It is a time for true heroism and sacrifice to rise up against the overwhelming odds.
