Die Juden von Barnow (Novellensammlung): Die Geschichten aus der Welt des osteuropäischen Judentums (German Edition)

by Karl Emil Franzos

MY LAST DUCHESS: A Dramatic Lyrics from one of the most important Victorian poets & playwrights, also known for Porphyria’s Lover, The Pied Piper of Hamelin, The Book and the Ring

by Robert Browning

“My Last Duchess” is a poem, frequently anthologised as an example of the dramatic monologue. It first appeared in 1842 in Browning’s Dramatic Lyrics. The poem is written in 28 rhymed couplets of iambic pentameter. The poem is set during the late Italian Renaissance. The speaker (presumably the Duke of Ferrara) is giving the emissary of the family of his prospective new wife (presumably a third or fourth since Browning could have easily written ‘second’ but did not do so) a tour of the artworks in his home. He draws a curtain to reveal a painting of a woman, explaining that it is a portrait of his late wife; he invites his guest to sit and look at the painting.
Robert Browning (1812 – 1889) was an English poet and playwright whose mastery of dramatic verse, and in particular the dramatic monologue, made him one of the foremost Victorian poets.

WORDSWORTH & COLERIDGE: Lyrical Ballads and Other Poems: The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, The Dungeon, The Nightingale, Dejection: An Ode…(Including … on the Principles and Secrets of Poetry)

by Samuel Taylor Coleridge

This carefully edited collection has been designed and formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices.
Lyrical Ballads, two collections of poems by William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge are generally considered to have marked the beginning of the English Romantic movement in literature. The immediate effect on critics was modest, but they became and remain a landmark, changing the course of English literature and poetry. Most of the poems in the 1798 edition were written by Wordsworth, with Coleridge contributing only five poems to the collection, including one of his most famous works, “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner”. A second edition was published in 1800, in which Wordsworth included additional poems and a preface detailing the pair’s avowed poetical principles.
Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772 – 1834) was an English poet, literary critic and philosopher who, with his friend William Wordsworth, was a founder of the Romantic Movement in England and a member of the Lake Poets. He wrote the poems The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan, as well as the major prose work Biographia Literaria.
William Wordsworth (1770 -1850) was a major English Romantic poet who, with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, helped to launch the Romantic Age in English literature with their joint publication Lyrical Ballads (1798).

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860 -1904) was a Russian physician, dramaturge and author who is considered to be among the greatest writers of short stories in history. Along with Henrik Ibsen and August Strindberg, Chekhov is often referred to as one of the three seminal figures in the birth of early modernism in the theatre. Chekhov had at first written stories only for financial gain, but as his artistic ambition grew, he made formal innovations which have influenced the evolution of the modern short story. He made no apologies for the difficulties this posed to readers, insisting that the role of an artist was to ask questions, not to answer them.

ODE TO A NIGHTINGALE

by John Keats

This eBook edition of “Ode to a Nightingale” has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices.
“Ode to a Nightingale” is either the garden of the Spaniards Inn, Hampstead, London, or, according to Keats’ friend Charles Armitage Brown, under a plum tree in the garden of Keats House, also in Hampstead. According to Brown, a nightingale had built its nest near his home in the spring of 1819. Inspired by the bird’s song, Keats composed the poem in one day. It soon became one of his 1819 odes and was first published in Annals of the Fine Arts the following July. “Ode to a Nightingale” is a personal poem that describes Keats’s journey into the state of Negative Capability. The tone of the poem rejects the optimistic pursuit of pleasure found within Keats’s earlier poems and explores the themes of nature, transience and mortality, the latter being particularly personal to Keats. The nightingale described within the poem experiences a type of death but does not actually die. Instead, the songbird is capable of living through its song, which is a fate that humans cannot expect.
John Keats (1795-1821) was an English Romantic poet. The poetry of Keats is characterized by sensual imagery, most notably in the series of odes. Today his poems and letters are some of the most popular and most analyzed in English literature.
