Saikhom Mirabai Chanu

November 30, 2017 was a historic day for India in the sport of weightlifting. Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won the gold medal in the Women’s 48 kg category at the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships. The event was held at Ahaheim, California, US, and Mirabai set a new world record by lifting a weight of 194 kg in total. The break-up amounted to 85 kg in Snatch and 109 kg in Clean & Jerk. No doubt, it is a huge feat for herself as well as the whole nation. People from all over India joined in congratulating Chanu on her grand achievement.
Mirabai is 23 years old and hails from Manipur. Her silver medal at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games is still fresh in the minds of many, and the sensational gold has added glitters to her growing bouquet of achievements, collected at such a young age. Mirabai considers the legendary Kunjarani Devi as her inspiration in weightlifting, and managed to better her idol’s record with this gold, indeed making for a dream-come-true moment for herself and all those involved with the sport of weightlifting in India.
