“A strong female lead role has science fiction in an uproar as she steers this genre to the front-line, not the typical scenario. A refreshing change from the traditional romp of sci fi meets fantasy saga. An enjoyable read and I’m looking forward to the sequel.”

PRIMAL 2055 – Escape

by Jack Silkstone

She never knew her name, only the number they used to define her. A possession of Sakkin Industries, she is being honed into a surgical weapon, trained to infiltrate and exterminate. Slowly, day-by-day, they try to erode her humanity and replace it with blind obedience and determination.

For operative Eight Two, Sakkin is a second chance at life. Rescued from a massacred village, she’s given a new home among their deadly trainees at the Institute. But as she’s indoctrinated, the brutal training reveals she’s not like them. Conflicted, she’s torn between graduating to join Sakkin’s elite ranks or lashing out against the injustice they bring to the world.

Part 1 in a new series, 2055 – Escape follows on from the PRIMAL books of hard-hitting global vigilantes. It gives a glimpse into a not so distant future where security conglomerates protect the privileged few, Lascar has evolved into a sophisticated humanitarian aid outfit, and a shadow war is looming.

Space Pirates: Dangerous Dimensions: The Brave but Unlucky Captain Renouf Vaubadon and the Continuous Chain of Calamities

by Ingo Potsch

If bad luck could be said to have followed one person, Captain Renouf Vaubadon would certainly be considered as having good chances of winning this championship, if it was a contest to be crowned as a person disadvantaged by cruel fate. The man was certainly struggling, and struggling hard, to make it, – nay, to barely stay alive. Thus, blaming him for his hard fate might neither be fair nor useful at all, especially since he died in such an unexpected and cruel way, which would anyway inspire pity in most observers, not matter their knowledge of the man’s own crimes. Renouf Vaubadon’s bad luck started with the family he was born into. He could be chided for having made a bad choice in that respect, if he had anything to do with it. In clear absence of his guilt in this matter, only blind fate could be blamed, which cannot be bothered about at all, be it blind or not. From Renouf Vaubadon’s childhood, through his youth, and all along his adult life, till his premature death, the man’s unlikely amount of bad luck is as amazing statistically as it is pitiable to watch the poor wretch receiving one after the other strokes of fate. True, Vaubadon kept on standing up, kept on fighting for his life, kept on pursuing his happiness with all his mental and physical strength, which was enormous, yet rarely has anyone struggled so hard and archived so little with it. What Renouf Vaubadon had managed is to get admitted into the lot of the galaxy’s worst pirates, about whom chapters of this history of piracy in our beautiful Milky Way were compiled from the archives of nations human and alien. This, of course, is a doubtful honor, and it won’t bring the man’s life back, either. In fact, as Vaubadon was a pirate, it is not quite certain of he would even want his life back, even if it could be given back to him, because that might happen just for his life to be taken away from him again, as piracy is still punishable by death in many jurisdictions. Therefore, we might let the man rest in peace, yet perhaps we can learn from his example how bad fate can be to some people. It almost appears as if Renouf Vaubadon had been singled out by cruel destiny to suffer as many setbacks and as much harm as anyone only could. Because, as they say, nothing is so useless that it cannot even serve as a bad example, we may let this pirate teach us with his story that there are poor creatures in this universe who live lives that resemble endless chains of calamities rather than an enjoyable existence.
