A Strange and Bitter Fruit: The Peacemaker

by Barry C. Davis

The thrilling saga of the Powell family continues in A Strange and Bitter Fruit: The Peacemaker, a follow-up to the bestselling historical novel A Strange and Bitter Fruit.
The book opens in 1913, seven years after the tragic conclusion of A Strange and Bitter Fruit. At the heart of The Peacemaker are four males, each consumed by anger and hate given the events portrayed in the previous novel. Robert Powell, son of the wronged Thomas “Tee” Powell, has taken up the mantle of revenge, doggedly pursuing the elusive Wendell Pike, the last surviving Klansman of the group responsible for lynching Tee’s parents and sisters. After years of fruitless searching, Pike finally surfaces at the 50th anniversary celebration of the Battle of Gettysburg. Robert’s actions in Gettysburg draw the attention of Clellon Folmar Junior, son of the Pinkerton detective who kidnapped Robert and his sister Harriet, leading to Harriet’s death. Folmar, obsessed with revenge since youth after viewing his father’s body, one that was tortured and mutilated by Tee, is a federal agent. He convinces his boss and President Wilson that he should track down the Powell family given the events at Gettysburg. Unknown to his superiors, Clellon plans to lynch any Powells that he can find, performing the act in the same South Carolina field where the original Powell lynchings occurred. Folmar reaches out to the families of the Klansmen killed by Tee Powell, placing him in contact with Charles Marston, US Army officer and another man dedicated to the destruction of the Powells. As a youth Charles had glimpsed the shattered body of his father Marshall, another victim of Tee Powell. Innocent William Reems, mixed race son of Billy Reems, rounds out the angry quartet. With his light complexion, William is a target of violence in all-black West Philadelphia, where he lives with his adopted mother, Sara Powell Matthews. Although a person of color, William develops a deep hatred of all black people, an internal conflict with tragic consequences.
Powell matriarch Sara, recently remarried, has plans of her own. She, too, contacts the families of the Klansmen involved in the Powell tragedy. Lillian Marston, mother of Charles, is receptive to Sara’s offer of peace. Can the two women bring peace to the situation as their sons remain dedicated to violent revenge?
The Peacemaker confronts the issues of the first novel – violence, revenge, racial injustice – as reflected in the lives of these four men and in the context of the challenges present in the early 20th Century. The Powell Legacy pales against the scope and tragic scale of events – a World War and a Pandemic – each epically destructive, costing an untold number of lives, each far-reaching in impact into our modern times.
Challenging times call for exceptional men and women to courageously confront them. Who among these men and women is able to put past events behind them to confront a shared evil, a shared threat? Who will become The Peacemaker?
