An air fryer is a timely kitchen appliance used to ‘fry’ food. The purpose of the air fryer is to cook tasty foods with minimal use of oil or no oil at all. It does this well because of its use of Rapid Air Technology.
An air fryer circulates super heated air to cook food. The air can heat up to 200°C and thus, by the time the food is cooked, it has the browned and crisp quality normally associated with fried foods. Far from being complicated, the air fryer is a simple appliance.
How is that so? Well, it only relies on two things.
The first one is the grill or heating element located near the food or air fryer basket. As a result, the cooking is more efficient and allows for minimal wastage of heat. The second thing the air fryer relies on is an exhaust fan. The fan is conveniently located just above the cooking chamber. Thus, it works well to circulate air from the underside. Remember, this is heated air. The fan ensures that the air passes through the food constantly. This allows for even cooking as all parts of the food receive contact with the same heating temperature.
There is more.
Compared to the traditional oven, the air fryer takes less time to preheat. In fact, many air fryer recipes do not require you to preheat your air fryer first. You can just start cooking immediately. The Rapid Air Technology and smaller volume adopted by the air fryer ensure that the appliance gets hot very fast. This means you can save time. Another thing you can save is the oil you use.
Air frying uses very little oil. For example, if you intend to cook fries, you will only need 1-2 tablespoons to coat the fries and cook them. When air frying, the main thing to remember is that oil is not necessary for the actual frying. The actual frying happens via superheated air. Thus, when using the air fryer, you should pack your food loosely in the air fryer basket. This allows the air to flow freely between the ingredients. If you pack the food tightly, you will keep the hot air from flowing freely, and the results will not be too great.
So, what types of foods can you cook in your air fryer?
If food calls for frying, grilling, or baking, you can cook it in the air fryer. You can use ramekins to make cooking easier or if you wish to bake something, place a heat safe dish in the air fryer basket. When baking, your air fryer turns into a basic oven.
When frying, the important thing is to keep the food dry. This is especially so if you have marinated it. Pat it dry before placing it in the air fryer. This will prevent excess smoke and splattering.
