The ADHD Excuse: What the teacher hasn’t already heard…

With ADHD being overly diagnosed lately, many teachers are less receptive to students that really do struggle with the disorder. Many parents enjoy taking their children to “meet the teacher” night and share in the excitement of starting off a new school year. Parents of children with ADHD tend to have a very different experience.

We think we’re doing right by our child and the teacher by letting the teacher know. Maybe the teacher will understand when he or she sees my child do certain things or behave certain ways. Maybe he or she will be more attentive to the way the other students treat my child. Maybe…just maybe…they’ll better understand my child’s struggles and will communicate with me on things they notice in the classroom.

In fourth grade, we didn’t make it to “meet the teacher” night because we were in the Neurologist’s office having an EEG done. I made it to each one the four years prior though. The talk helped…50% of the time. The other two times, I got an eye roll from both teachers. I heard, “That’s what all the parents say,” and “If I had a dollar for every parent that has given me that excuse…”

My son’s journey started off with a great year in Kindergarten, followed by what might live up to be the worst year of his life in first grade. Second grade wasn’t too bad and third grade was fantastic. By fourth grade, he had given up on getting his teacher to “like” him. It broke my heart to listen to my son tell me, through his tears, “I don’t know what it is Mom. I just can’t do anything right this year.”

Throughout this journey, my son and I have both learned a lot. We’ve learned a lot about ADHD and coping with symptoms and we’ve learned a lot about dealing with teachers and the school system in general. Personally, I learned that many other parents are fighting the same battles.

If my son’s journey is able to help bring some understanding to the table for other students, parents, teachers, school administrators and the like…we will consider this a successful mission. But at the end of the day, I will smile if even one person is inspired, encouraged, motivated, or simply more understanding of what it’s like for a child who truly does have ADHD. It is NOT an excuse.
