UNDERSTANDING IMMANUEL KANT: The Smart Student’s Guide to Grounding for the Metaphysics of Morals (Smart Student’s Guides to Philosophical Classics Book 4)

by Laurence Houlgate

This book is fourth in a series of books devoted to helping students understand some of the great works in ethics, social and political philosophy. It has been said that Kant’s Grounding for the Metaphysics of Morals “is the single most important work in modern moral philosophy” (Henry Allison). It is also one of the most difficult books to comprehend, especially for beginning philosophy students. Understanding Immanuel Kant makes Kant accessible to students while at the same time showing why his writings have had such a powerful influence on philosophical ethics.
Professor Houlgate’s book is not a scholarly monograph on Kant, nor is it a bare-bones outline of Kant’s writings. Instead, the book gives the reader an interpretation of Kant in ordinary language, explaining the technical words Kant uses (“analytic,” “synthetic,” “categorical imperative,” “autonomy of the will”) and using examples of moral problems drawn from everyday life. The book also shows how Kantian ethics differs from the theories of the other great philosophers represented in the series (Plato, Locke and Mill).
Each chapter concludes with questions for thought and discussion and within these questions students will find many topics that can be pursued in term papers.

The Public Mapping Project: How Public Participation Can Revolutionize Redistricting (Brown Democracy Medal)

by Michael P. McDonald

The Laurence and Lynne Brown Democracy Medal is an initiative of the McCourtney Institute for Democracy at Pennsylvania State University. It annually recognizes outstanding individuals, groups, and organizations that produce exceptional innovations to further democracy in the United States or around the world.

Micah Altman and Michael P. McDonald unveil the Public Mapping Project, which developed DistrictBuilder, an open-source software redistricting application designed to give the public transparent, accessible, and easy-to-use online mapping tools. As they show, the goal is for all citizens to have access to the same information that legislators use when drawing congressional mapsâ??and use that data to create maps of their own.

It’s who we are, it’s what we do

by Rene Jax

Who we are, is an examination and exploration of the human race and its propensity toward violence. It does more than just complain about violence but suggests how people must accept this part of ourselves. Passivity and love for all mankind is a sure-fire means to become extinct in a world of alpha males and aggression. Violence is built into our DNA just as surely as our eyes, liver and teeth.
Violence serves humans since the beginning of time and is necessary for our survival. And our survival today is just as much determined by our willingness and capability to act violently as it was a million years ago. Its who we are, its what we do takes a fresh look at society and the individual and supports the individual’s need to take back their life from the burden that modern society places upon him and his family. This book encourages people to step back from their political and financial support of our dysfunctional societies and focus on raising their children in a moral, healthy and normal setting. Jax is able to document the many ways that human families are failing, due to the failed societies we live in.

Going to Pentecost: An Experimental Approach to Studies in Pentecostalism (Ethnography, Theory, Experiment Book 7)

by Annelin Eriksen

Co-authored by three anthropologists with long-term expertise studying Pentecostalism in Vanuatu, Angola, and Papua New Guinea/the Trobriand Islands respectively, Going to Pentecost offers a comparative study of Pentecostalism in Africa and Melanesia, focusing on key issues as economy, urban sociality, and healing. More than an ordinary comparative book, it recognizes the changing nature of religion in the contemporary world – in particular the emergence of “non-territorial” religion (which is no longer specific to places or cultures) – and represents an experimental approach to the study of global religious movements in general and Pentecostalism in particular.
