Different Shades of Vegetarian – For the Veggie Lover In All of Us

Vegetarianism is the practice of eating only food derived or harvested from plants. These may or may not be cooked food. The diet may or may not include animal by-products such as eggs, dairy foods, or gelatin, but it ideally excludes all animal meats (whether from land or sea) from this diet.

But that’s just the thing: vegetarianism seems to have emphasized the exclusion of non-plant foods, as if these completely unhealthy or “evil” for the human bodyâ??which isn’t true. Meats, seafood, eggs, and dairy products do have their merits. That’s why the ancestors of homo sapiens were first omnivorous hunter-gatherers, rather than foraging or farming herbivores. Eating anything that was available, meats included, was the most efficient way to get all the right nutrients and survive.

That’s not to say vegetarianism is completely wrong, either. Science has proven that eating mostly veggies is always good for you, especially if you live a life that’s nowhere near that of a Stone Age human. Our bodies seem designed to take in only a moderate to spare amount of non-plant foods, especially for a semi-sedentary lifestyle.

But a vegetarian’s goal should be to emphasize the nutritional value and taste of the fruits of the earth, rather than demonize other foods. Vegetarianism should mean sharing with other people (regardless of eating habits) a growing love and enthusiasm for eating delicious plant-based foods. It should be about appreciating the history behind vegetarianism, the science that backs it up, and the wonderful gourmand’s world it opens up.
