Hustle Baby: Must Read Urban Street Tale (Urban Fiction Book 1)

by Urban Fiction Books

Chapter 1 (After school special)

It was 2:54 PM as I sat in the back of my class. I was anxious as ever. My teacher Ms. Green often waited until the end of the school day before she handed back our test scores. We had a spelling test every week. A test that I looked forward to simply for its results.
As my teacher walked through the aisle letting each student know what they needed to work on to improve their scores. Though I could only hear her voice, I could smell the perfume that she wore. A scent that somehow reminded me of a hospital.
“Antonio, keep up the great work.” She said approaching my desk.
She laid too perfect 100% scores from math and spelling. Without any acknowledgement, I obviously had my mind on something totally different. I didn’t think like the average 3rd grader and certainly didn’t act like one out side of this school.
I sensed my teacher move on to the next student. I turned my nose hoping that her strong fragrance evaporated just as quick as she moved on. Sometimes I believed my teacher had a clue what was on my thoughts. Yet, she left me alone.
It was Friday afternoon and my eyes were out the window following every car that went up and down the street. My heart jumped in my chest as the school Bell rang loudly. I already had my back pack on, so I snatched both of my test and hit the exit before most students even cleared their desk. I struggled to skip two steps at a time as my little legs worked over time to get outside.
Jumping from the final three bottom steps I hit the pavement and glared up and down the street. Mother’s awaited with strollers for infants, brothers, sisters, and father’s all crowded the walk expecting their loved ones. Not noticing anything familiar, I began taking flight up the street.
My back pack flopped from side to side recklessly as I sliced through older kids from the higher grades, as well as young gang bangers having a meeting. I only lived around the corner so I knew everybody, and if I didn’t know them then they definitely knew me.
“Hey Tony!” Shouted a group of girl in unison from the fence of a pick up basketball game.
I waved with my two test papers in my hand and kept it moving. I was only focused on one thing. I was trying my best to hurry as fast as I could . All I needed was good grades. I heard my name shouted from all angles as I cut through the park.
I run became a slight skip as I walked up on the parking lot of my apartments. It was then that I felt relieved and stopped. I gasped to catch my breath resting my hands on my knees slightly crumbling my papers.
When I looked up I witnessed the sun beam a reflection that made me use my test scores to shield the blinding gleam from 24″ chrome wheels.
Walking up to the car slowly, I gave it a once over by walking around it looking for any hints of flaw. The two tone flip flop paint sparkled under the afternoon sun and I could see my perfect reflection in the wheels that stood nearly taller than myself.
Fully satisfied, I darted IP the steps to my apartment door and did my special knock. When the door opened, I flew inside through the living room heading straight for the kitchen.
“Slow your ass down. Running in my house.” Shouted my mom, but it was too late. I was already into my dad’s arms.
“What up dad?” I yelled in excitement like I didn’t see him in years.
“What it do little homie.” He said putting me down so we could do our special hand shake.
I was so hyped that I didn’t even realize that my dad had business in the kitchen or that I had crumbled both of my test scores. I panicked and grabbed the two paper smoothing them over between my palms and my small chest. I handed them toy dad and waited patiently as he determined a decision. He looked over it hard then smiled before handing the papers over to my mom for a final ruling.

Burning Rage (The Deuce Mora Series Book 3)

by Jean Heller

It’s already been a rough year for the Chicago Journal‘s first-rate journalistic sleuth, Deuce Mora. After two agonizing investigations – one of which won her a Pulitzer Prize, the other of which forced her to kill a man – she claims she’s sworn off action-packed chases that cause nightmares. Stillâ?¦from the moment she hears the earliest details of the first fire, her detective-instincts say the pieces don’t fit, and every other instinct tells the hard-hitting reporter she can’t walk away from the story – even though she knows she’ll regret it.

As a series of deadly fires destroys landmarks first, then occupied structures, the body count rises by scores and the city is gripped by terror at Christmastime, adding lost revenue to property damage in the hundreds of millions. Whole blocks of Chicago real estate are falling to an arsonist, but no one knows why and everyone suspects the worst – terrorism.

After the initial tip from the lead arson investigator (aka her boyfriend), Deuce is on her own to solve the mystery. Their relationship could endanger his reputation and his job if he’s even suspected of leaking information to her, so they’ve called a temporary halt. But she’s not exactly lacking for company – her old adversary, FBI agent Colter, has a tail on her, and Colter himself keeps popping out of the shadows. His presence at the crime scene and, even more revealingly, that of an NSA agent point to the suspicion of jihadist terrorism. But no terrorist group has claimed the mayhem.

Heller’s chilling, diabolical plot promises fans of hard-boiled mysteries a substantial feast to sink their teeth into and a knock-your-socks-off ending.

“Good reporters do not always good novelists make, but Jean Heller is both.” — The Boston Sunday Globe

WHO WILL LIKE IT: Fans of Chicago private investigators VI Warshawski and Libby Fischer Hellman’s Georgia Davis, get-the-story-or-die reporters like Hank Philippi Ryan’s Jane Ryland and Kelly Lange’s Maxi Poole, hard-boiled female protagonists like Marcia Muller’s Sharon McCone and Laura Lippman’s Tess Monaghan; and anyone who admires tough-minded women sleuths who’re good in a fight.
