The Colors Of Burning

by Shawn Blankenship

The trees were bright with the colors of burning as the world began its yearly dying, and the stones were gray, the wind was cold, as I stood staring at the house of the man I would kill.

The rage, burning in my veins like hot red racetracks or lightning in a tempest, and the pain sitting in my gut like vile acid, was burning away all that was pure. The weight of the axe in my hand felt real and solid – the most deadly thing I had ever known like a predator in high grass about to spring. I felt myself on the brink of a threshold that the red racetracks led across, a precipice that I knew once I stepped out beyond, I would never look back on and the distance from there would darken all the dead gone brighter days to black photographs and stain my soul even blacker still and damn it then forever.

The man in black laughed behind me. I knew he was there even if I couldn’t see him. He was back there in the shadows of the old willows that hung over the graveyard, staring at my back and he was laughing. He thinks I’m a coward, I remember thinking. He thinks I won’t. But I will. I did.
