by Ronald Higgins

Brent Stewart, once a military policeman in Saigon during the Vietnam War in 1975 is Vice President for an insurance company in New York City. All he ever wanted was to become a private detective, but he couldn’t pursue it because of financial reasons. Fortunately for him, winning the million-dollar lotter and investing the money in the stock market brings him into the limelight of being an independent wealthy bachelor in New York City, living a life of every person’s dream.
He resigns from the Insurance company and opens his own private investigation firm. One day Alex, Brent’s co-policeman in Vietnam seeks his help about the disappearance of his wife, Maggie. But Brent’s team must deal with a Mafia group based in Hong Kong (AKA Chinese Mafia) in connection to Maggie’s disappearance and her father’s blunder against the gang.
In Maggie, I Love you, the story of a woman who is too desperate to turn from rags to riches even if it affects her family is told. This book also tells how a power and dedication to work as exemplified by Bent Stewart, the detective in charge, can easily solve any case.

The Infected And Those They Left Behind: 1. Devotion (Chronicles of the Infected)

by QJ Martin

They called it the end of death, the beginning of a new Golden Age for mankind.

They were half right.

When Sanctum Pharmaceuticals announced that they had finally discovered the key to instantaneous regeneration, locked deep within our genome, the world shook with anticipation. Little did they know the effect that this so-called ‘Cure’ would have on mankind.

Now, one father is left picking up the pieces of his life, making allies and enemies in his fight to find his children, before it’s too late.

Prologue (Reprinted With Permission):

Klaxons rang throughout the laboratory, echoing down its large, empty corridors. Beakers were smashed, windows were busted, and tables were split in half. Scott sat there, furiously typing on his computer, knowing that he had only moments of life left.

He groaned as he reached over to move the mouse. He reached down and wrapped his hand around the broom handle protruding from his stomach. It was bleeding even worse than before. He wiped his hand on his jeans and continued typing.

It was pointless for him to do anything else now. There was no hope for him, but there was still hope for the rest of humanity.

Across the room, Scott heard the ding of the elevator. The doors slid open, and the footsteps of dozens of individuals echoed across the laboratory. Mixed in with all that noise was the cacophony of growls, snarls, and hisses.

Scott didn’t bother looking behind him. He knew who was there, and he knew that his presence made no difference now. Scott was either going to be successful, save the world, and die, or he was going to fail, doom the world, and die. So he continued typing.

“Scott,” a man chided, clicking his tongue at him. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you, Scott.”

Scott ignored the man, not even glancing back at him. He knew what he would see, anyway. His buzzed brown hair, his thick three-day beard, his mischievous smirk, and an army of disposable soldiers at his beck and call.

Scott continued typing.

“Come now, Scott. You know I don’t like saying things twice.”

Scott’s arms were yanked off of the keyboard. He screamed in agony as the broomstick slammed against the desk, wedging itself deeper into his stomach. They turned his chair around, and Scott came face to face with his newfound enemy.

The man, who didn’t even deserve the name of Solomon Parsons, stood there, grinning from cheek to cheek. Behind him stood a dozen grey-skinned, sickly-thin monsters in laboratory coats. He knew almost all of them by name, not that it made a difference anymore. For all intents and purposes, they were nothing but cannon fodder now.

To his right and left stood two more monsters, clutching his arms, not giving him an inch of slack.

“What do you want with me?” Scott groaned.

“I think you know the answer to that already. You’ve lost. There’s nothing you can do to change that now. There’s only one option you have left: do what I command you to do, when I command you to do it. Give up this pointless crusade of yours and accept that the human race is doomed.”

“You know I can’t do that.”

“I know. It’s just a waste.”

The man lifted his hand up and pointed at Scott. All around him, the monsters reacted as if they had just been awoken from some manner of trance. They started marching forward, encircling him. The two monsters on each side of him tightened their grip on his arms.

Scott reached under his sleeve and pulled out a scalpel, stabbing the first monster in its hand. It reeled back from shock, letting him go. He stabbed the second one in the leg, and when it doubled over, he finished it off.
