Why Is there a Civil War in Syria?: The reason refugees coming to Europe

by Gregory March

The Syrian Civil War is an ongoing multi-sided armed conflict in Syria fought between the Ba’athist Syrian Arab Republic led by President Bashar al-Assad, along with its allies, and various forces opposing both the government and each other in varying combinations.

The unrest in Syria, part of a wider wave of the 2011 Arab Spring protests, grew out of discontent with the Assad government and escalated to an armed conflict after protests calling for his removal were violently suppressed. The war is being fought by several factions: the Syrian government and its international allies, a loose alliance of Sunni rebel groups (including the Free Syrian Army), the majority-Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Salafi jihadist groups (including al-Nusra Front), and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), with a number of countries in the region and beyond being either directly involved or providing support to one or another faction.

Iran, Russia and Hezbollah support the Syrian government militarily, with Russia conducting air operations since September 2015. The U.S.-led international coalition, established in 2014 with the declared purpose of countering ISIL, has conducted airstrikes against ISIL as well as against government and pro-government targets. Turkey, on the other hand, has become deeply involved since 2016, actively supporting the Syrian opposition and occupying large swaths of northwestern Syria.

International organizations have accused the Syrian government, ISIL, opposition rebel groups, and the U.S.-led coalition of severe human rights violations and of massacres. The conflict has caused a major refugee crisis. Over the course of the war, a number of peace initiatives have been launched, including the March 2017 Geneva peace talks on Syria led by the United Nations, but fighting continues.

REMF Life Inside The Wire

by Kevin Baldwin

REMF Life Inside The Wire

MOST VIETNAM VETERANS SAW COMBAT. Actually the opposite is true; only a relatively small percentage was ever involved in combat. In fact, it is likely less than 30% of all who served there ever saw combat of any sort during their war. (Myths & Misconceptions: Vietnam War Folklore – by Michael Kelley, July 1998).

Some 2.6 million Americans served in the Republic of Vietnam between 1957 and 1975. So what were the other “likely more than” 70% of them up to in that place? Or more to the point, who wants to read a Vietnam book or watch a Vietnam film or documentary about a Company Clerk or a Switchboard Operator? Or how about the Mess Sergeant or the Motor Pool? Or even a focus on the BOQ? Borrr…ing! Then again, if you haven’t read about or watched any of that, and especially if you were never in Vietnam, I guarantee you will be surprised at what you’ll find there! Remember … this is 1970 South Vietnam and a nasty war is raging all around. After all, if the grunts had to go outside the wire to hunt the enemy, the same enemy had to get inside the wire to get to what the grunts were out there protecting.

Please allow me to take you along right beside me on this one year guided tour through Long Binh, Cu Chi, Long Thanh North and Vinh Long in the Mekong Delta, III & IV Corp Vietnam. Like any good “story” this one has not only the drugs, murders, sex and violence, but also my extraordinary encounter with a very little known Vietnam-era DARPA top secret project known as “Quiet Star” and the YO-3A stealth aircraft. Only 11 were ever built and you’ll be amazed by their story and the few brave REMFs who flew them.

REMF Life Inside The Wire is not a “war story”. And while a lot of “war” still goes on “Inside The Wire”… its viewed from the perspective of an REMF who was on the inside looking out through that wire. Memoir, history, opinion … this is my sometimes humorous take on the insanity that was Vietnam … and what it felt like to be an REMF. Wipe off your sweat, smell the misery! Come along with me, and pay tribute to the “the Majority” who lived inglorious, totally unsung lives of often lonely misery in an alien land that held it in abundance. And that along with all the dangers that were included merely by setting foot upon this place. Brothers, embrace that banner of REMF as your badge of honor and wear it proudly. I wrote this book for us.

The Roman Catholic Inquisition was one of the most controversial organizations in human history. Although it has been painted in a negative light, the Inquisition was too broad in scope to define as simply good or bad. It was a period where conflict and bloodshed were inevitable. It was a time where war, famine, plague, and poverty were common factors of human life. From the 1180s to the 1830s, the Inquisition was the judicial arm of the Catholic Church. Created to root out and punish heretics within the Catholic faith, the Inquisition became an institution that would carve its name into history.

Inside you will read about…

â?? The Conception of the Inquisition
â?? The Hammer of Witches
â?? The Spanish Inquisition
â?? The Portuguese Inquisition
â?? The Roman Inquisition
â?? Shades of the Inquisition in Modern Society
And much more!

Throughout its many variations, the Inquisition took hold in France, Spain, Portugal, and Italy and in the process, both hastened and stunted progress in Western society. The Inquisition was as multi-faceted in its failure as it was in its successes. Though it was responsible for the deaths of thousands, it was also responsible for the sparing of thousands more. The Inquisition put to death some of the brightest minds of the time, and yet their brutality quickened the pace of the Renaissance and the Enlightenment. In short, the Inquisition was many thingsâ??easy to define is not one of them. This concise, compressed guidebook reveals the history, failures, and successes of the Roman Catholic Inquisition from its birth to its final death rattle.

Stuff Doesn’t Just Happen 2: Challenger, Czar, Sultana, Mulholland , Kursk, Pearl Harbor, Alive!

by Bob Mayer

Book Two in the Stuff Doesn’t Just Happen: The Gift of Failure Series by NY Times Bestselling Author, West Point Graduate and former Green Beret, Bob Mayer.

Covering the cascade events leading up to each disaster, why they happened, and how we can prevent similar disasters in the future.

“My God, Thiokol. When do you want me to launch? Next April?” Senior NASA official on a conference call to the manufacturer of the solid boosters, when they recommended on the morning of the launch that it be postponed.

“It’s dark here to write, but I’ll try by touch. It seems like there are no chances, 10%-20%. Let’s hope that at least someone will read this. Hello to everyone. There is no need to despair.” Captain Lieutenant Dmitri Kolesnikov, commander 7th Compartment (turbine room) Russian submarine Kursk.

“If we arrive safe at Cairo it would be the greatest trip ever made on the western waters, as there were more people on board than were ever carried on one boat on the Mississippi River!” William J, Gambrel, first clerk & part owner of the steamship Sultana.

“Should hostilities once break out between Japan and the United States, it would not be enough that we take Guam and the Philippines, nor even Hawaii and San Francisco. To make victory certain, we would have to march into Washington and dictate the terms of peace in the White House. I wonder if our politicians (who speak so lightly of a Japanese-American war) have confidence as to the final outcome and are prepared to make the necessary sacrifices.” Admiral Yamamoto, Commander Japanese Navy. (Note that this quote was used extensively for propaganda purposed by the United States by leaving out the last sentence)

Mulholland & The St. Francis Dam
During the Los Angeles Coroner’s Inquest, William Mulholland said, “this inquest is a very painful for me to have to attend but it is the occasion of that is painful. The only ones I envy about this whole thing are the ones who are dead.” In later testimony, after responding to a question, he added, “Whether it is good or bad, don’t blame anyone else, you just fasten it on me. If there was an error in human judgment, I was the human, I won’t try to fasten it on anyone else.” William Mulholland, chief engineer, Water Department Los Angeles

“I am not prepared to be a tsar. I never wanted to become one. I know nothing of the business of ruling.” Nicholas II, last Czar of Russia.

“It was repugnant. Through the eyes of our civilized society it was a disgusting decision. My dignity was on the floor having to grab a piece of my dead friend and eat it in order to survive. ‘But then I thought of my mother and wanted to do my best to get back to see her. I swallowed a piece and it was a huge step – after which nothing happened.” Dr. Robert Canessa

Reviravolta na saúde: origem e articulação do movimento sanitário (Portuguese Edition)

by Sarah Escorel

Uma verdadeira Reviravolta na Saúde, começada no movimento estudantil, no interior de movimentos médicos e na própria academia. Sarah Escorel detalha o início do movimento sanitário no Brasil, a partir do governo Figueiredo. Para isso, utilizou não somente documentos, mas depoimentos. Ã? a história contada pelos próprios atores.

by Bruce Thatcher

Adamant Aggressors exist today. They want something America has, and they’ll stop at nothing to achieve their goals. Anything less than complete achievement is unsatisfactory; any agreement that grants only part of a goal will be broken just as soon as the adamant aggressor believes restrictive conditions will not be successfully enforced.

ADAMANT AGGRESSORS: How to Identify and Deal with Them, published in June 2011, examined five adamant aggressors from history. It defined the three essential characteristics that can be used as early warning to identify an adamant aggressor, along with four guidelines that could be/should be but mostly aren’t used for dealing effectively with adamant aggressors who threaten us today.

Now, those same characteristics and guidelines are presented in this easy-reading digest of one historical adamant aggressor team — Chaim Weizmann and David Ben-Gurion of Israel; how they might have been identified and countered early enough to realize peaceful Jewish and Palestinian states in the Near East. In just 65 pages, What We Learn From Chaim Weizmann and David Ben-Gurion of Israel About Dealing With an Adamant Aggressor tells what we as a nation should be doing NOW to identify and counter adamant aggressors.

Understanding of these lessons by political scientists and policymakers may not ensure that the best choices will be made today . . . but understanding them will surely help to reject demonstrated bad choices and, thus, more likely arrive at better choices.
