Africa Motorcycle Expedition: Explore the Beauty of the Africa by Motorcycle

by Hamood Khamis

I grew up in Africa and lived there for quite a while. My family moved out when I was thirteen years old, and we ended up just staying in Oman.

The desire to go to Africa seemed to have been an obscure yearning to return. Something unique about the continent of Africa. Some will tell you who visited, especially those who lived there.

Planning long overland travel to Africa begins with dreams, but eventually, the practical necessities, the basics, have to be considered.

Africa has many attractions and entices me to visit every time. There is always a new adventure, something waiting to be discovered, if we can only find the time to look for it, and the courage to jump.

Africa is a continent of mysteries and excitement, of various cultures and exciting activities of natural wonders, vast wilderness areas and memorable experiences.

The continent filled with breathtaking sceneries; from high mountains, tropical rainforests, Savanna mixed woodlands, grasslands, ecosystems and extraordinary desserts.

Everyone knows that Africa’s main attraction is, of course, the wildlife but even if there were no wild animals in Africa, it would still be an infinite number of reasons to visit this amazing continent.

Getting the most out of the beauty of Africa than just turning up and ticking it off. It’s the sense of freedom and space that gets to me, the vast horizons, hills and the feeling that you can ride all day across its blowing grasslands and never get to the end of it.

Overland is not for everyone. It requires a good sense of humour, patience and teamwork when travel by a group. This form of travel does involve little hard work and preparation than your regular conventional holiday package.

“Life is not measured by numbers of breath we take, but by the number of moments that takes our breath way” – May Angelou

You must accept and follow team rules and accept any task given to you by your trip leader, prepare for adverse conditions, prepare to participate, prepare to cook, to put up a tent and sleep anywhere. Able to maintain your bike as well supporting others, accept any source of food and water, ride over long distances, prepare to ride under any road conditions that may appear during the journey or laughing out loud when a torrential downpour floods your tent in the middle of the night.

If you have the ability for enduring all of this, then you could be a potential overland traveller, this way you will be lucky to experience the real rhythm and soul of Africa. It can never describe as a luxury holiday – it’s more fun than that.

The continent is vast, and riding distances are long, several times longer for a given range than they are in more developed countries. Some roads that shown on a map as tarmac do exist, but others will be potholes, have broken sections, have rough, uneven surfaces or have little tarmac left. Other roads shown as gravel might be under construction or new. Some gravel roads are in excellent condition; some are not. Keep in mind that some gravel roads during the rainy season can be extremely muddy, with large puddles often the size of ponds.

“Training sessions are critical, help to keep motorcyclist physically and mentally fit.”

The overland journey can turn out to be the trip of a lifetime. It has many advantages, such as the ability to cover large areas in a limited time, have security better when you have the companionship of a large group, ultimate freedom to explore Africa as you intended to.

After obtaining experience from previous international motorcycle expeditions from Oman to Germany 2013 and from Oman to China in 2015, the overland knowledge fostered a self-confidence and helped to create a more positive attitude, enabled to get through hard times. I do believe that all success comes with a detailed pre-plan and proper preparation.
