Safdarjung’s Tomb: Discover India | Photojournals (Monuments of Delhi Book 5)

by David Riley

About the Series

Being a historic capital, and housing a vast array of heritage sites; Delhi has always been one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world. It has such a large plethora of monuments (and other places) to visit, that even a month’s trip to Delhi might seem insufficient.

This series makes an attempt to capture some of these monuments in pictures and words, telling all that you’d need to know about the monument: before, during as well as after visiting the place. This is your perfect guide to know about the concerned monument, as well as enjoy a preview/souvenir with beautiful photographs of the monuments. So, enjoy the book and take it with you as you journey through the city of Delhi, exploring the vast array of monuments that Delhi has to offer.

Safdarjung’s Tomb

The Tomb of Safdarjung, or Safdarjung’s Tomb is a mausoleum built in sandstone and marble, located in New Delhi. The mausoleum was built for the royal prime minister (Wazir ul-Mamlak-i-Hindustan) of the Mughal empire, when Ahmed Shah Bahadur was the emperor. It is one of the last royal tomb structures built in Delhi, and in India itself. The structure, which is topped by an imposing white onion-shaped dome was completed in the year 1754. It was built in the Late Mughal type of architecture.

The tomb is located near the Safdarjung Airport (named after the tomb complex), and near the much earlier Lodhi tombs located in Lodhi Gardens, in South Delhi. It is one of the many must-visit heritage sites in Delhi.
