Babazouk, Old Nice’s Changing Heart

by Lawrence Bohme

Lawrence Bohme, Anglo-Swedish author, illustrator, photographer and world traveller, lived in Paris as a student and later as a Unesco translator, before finally settling in Nice’s old quarter, popularly called Babazouk – “a veritable honeycomb of dark alleys and luminous church squares” whose mysteries and histories he recently set out to gather in this “historically serious and sometimes gossipy guidebook”- After a full year of “pleasurable research” and black-and-white photography, he has painted a portrait in words and images of this fascinating and always changing “heart of Nice”, with its street markets, ancient palaces and baroque churches, as well as remains of the ramparts which, long after their military function became obsolete, served as embankments to prevent the Paillon River from flooding the streets. Lawrence describes how Nice was traded back and forth between France and the Italian-speaking Duchy of Savoy for seven centuries, until it finally and officially became part of Napoleon III’s realm.
After an eccentric Scottish physician named Tobias Smollett wintered there in the late 18th century to cure his tubercular lungs, and then published in London y an account of his daily sea baths (unheard of then by the natives) praising the city’s mild winter climate, wealthy fellow sufferers began flocking to what soon was known as “the Riviera”. When the then devoutly Catholic government allowed them to build an Anglican Church in the city, the British gratefully financed, also, the creation of a coastal road which became known as the Promenade des Anglais.
Lawrence also details some of the more recent skullduggery in what he calls “a devils’ paradise”, with its lurid and often murderous scandals. As Somerset Maugham, who lived and died nearby, wrote, Nice is “a sunny place full of shady people”, but, as Lawrence irreverently adds, that’s half its charm!
