A Geometrical Framework for Understanding the Universe

by Gerald W. Scanlon

In physics there are two broad ways to look at the world. One is the classical realm of Newton and Einstein, where objects have definite form and interact in clearly determinate ways. The other is the quantum realm, where objects are more difficult to describe, since they have a strange mix of particle-like and wave-like behavior. The classical view gives us a wonderfully accurate description of everything from planets to baseballs. The quantum view is necessary to accurately describe the behavior of light and atoms. The classical world dominates on the scale of our daily lives, but nature seems to be rooted in quantum theory at its most basic level.

While both the classical and quantum approach are extremely accurate in their respective regimes, what happens in the intersection of the two regimes is still unclear. We don’t have a rigorous theory or framework to combine our classical and quantum models.

Imagine a geometrical framework that could reconcile our understanding of the infinitely small world of atoms and particles with that of the infinitely large scale of the cosmos. In this book, the author presents a geometrical framework that has the potential to explain and link together the classical and quantum realms of physics.

On The Origin of Sex & Aging By Means of Predator Selection: Or The Preservation of Sex And Aging Via Species Selection in the Struggle for Existence.

by Jeff T. Bowles

Many decades after Darwin’s death, finally enough facts about biology and evolution have been uncovered with which one can relatively easily complete the second and missing half of the theory of evolution that Darwin could not possibly have seen in his time. The evidence has been mounting for years that the “selfish gene” paradigm is not adequate to explain all of what is observed in the world around us-in particular, sex and aging. This book attempts to complete the theory of evolution by using a simple new concept of predator selection, a form of species selection, to solve the most enduring and intractable conundrums and paradoxes that have been plaguing evolutionary theory since its beginning- such as the existence and purpose of sex and aging, male and female sex types, and even homosexuality.
Written in an entertaining and easy to understand style for scientists and laymen alike, this expanded view of evolution leads to many solutions to evolution’s remaining paradoxes. One chapter includes a detailed examination of how various human hormones change with aging, and how the “good” hormones decline with age, and how the “bad” hormones intentionally designed by evolution to stop one from reproducing, skyrocket after age 50. (These anti-reproduction (pro-menopause) hormone changes have the unfortunate side effect of aging and death).
Sex and aging have never had any satisfactory explanation within the Selfish Gene paradigm begun by Darwin and his successors and popularized by Dawkins in his famous book-“The Selfish Gene”.
Aging and Sex are shown to be evolution’s evolved defenses to evolving predation, and in the absence of predation, they are proposed to be eventually selected against -leading to a world where most sexual species eventually should evolve into asexual ones.
As odd as this might sound, examples of many types of animals where asexual reproduction already occurs are provided. Including animals as advanced as turkeys, sharks, and lizards.
Exclusively female species that reproduce solely in a clonal manner such as walking sticks, blind cave crickets, whiptail lizards, and Brahminy blind snakes are also explored.
Homosexuality, while a widespread phenomenon in both humans and many species of animals, remains largely unexplored by current evolutionary theory. Homosexuality is examined within this new framework and hypothesized to be a defense against evolving predation that acts as birth control for what evolution perceives as less fit (predator-stressed) mothers.
Even human religion seems to reveal itself as an evolved trait within this new paradigm and appears to have evolved as a group defense to famine and drought. Religion is explored and explained with a special emphasis on the high rate of religious suicide associated with various religions and cults.
Sex and aging appear to be species-selected defenses to evolving predation that are being selected for at the local ecosystem level virtually everywhere and all the time. When sex and aging are viewed from this perspective, it becomes quite simple to understand how sex and aging evolved and continue to be selected for in almost all areas of the world.

Emergency Response: Life, Death and Helicopters

by Dave Greenberg

Stories from a life spent in the emergency services – true tales of rescue and adventure.

When Dave Greenberg was just 13 years old, he saved a life for the first time, using CPR. He already knew that he wanted to spend his life helping others in times of crisis, and that harrowing event on a city footpath only confirmed this desire. He went on to spend 25 years working with Life Flight – the Westpac Rescue Helicopter service in Wellington, New Zealand, taking part in many daring rescues on land and at sea, often taking the role of ‘the dope on a rope’ – their own term for the rescuer who dangles from a winch over stormy seas trying to pluck people from heaving ship decks or from the ferocious waves. These are his stories.

A Tale of Three Sisters: The Story of Neuropsychiatric Symptoms of Dementia

by Yong Tae Kwak

I was wondering the term “art of medicine” since my residency training. Why medicine is an art? What is the relationship between medicine and art? One day I saw the surgical operation and thought, ‘Oh, this is an art!’ But the term ‘art of medicine’ seems to be more commonly used to treat diseases that are harder to treat than technical aspects, and whose principles are not clearly defined.
However, as modern medicine is developed based on science, its center of gravity shifts from artistic medicine centered on the past to evidence-based medicine, but unfortunately it is not so much in dementia. Especially, there seems to be too much tendency to see the neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia patients in the eyes of third persons other than the patient’s eyes and minds.
At present, Korea is facing rapid changes in society due to aging society. Among the changes in population structure facing Korean society, dementia due to aging is emerging as the biggest problem. When we take our parents with dementia, we are sorrowful, angry, and parting due to abnormal neuropsychiatric symptoms associated with cognitive functioning rather than cognitive functioning itself. The problem is that it is not easy to correctly understand the symptoms of patients.

Dementia is not a disease or symptom that affects only a specific person. Everyone goes down this road or falls in front of it. Through this book, you can understand your parents’ behavior and think of them as the most part of their life journey, and you will be able to look at them with a warmer eye than now.
I hope that this publication will lead to a quicker understanding of the behavior of the elderly and patients with dementia as well as the nature of their existence, as well as the underlying nature of the disease.

Nudge for the Planet: A guide towards a new worldview

by Ginette Riopelle

The summer of 2018, with its series of heat waves and forest fires, made us aware of climate change and its possible consequences. Given the magnitude of the problem, we may feel overwhelmed or increasingly concerned. We may not know what to do, or we may act, but with the unpleasant feeling that the impact of our actions is futile.
Many of us would like to see our society change course towards a way of life that is sustainable for the planet. What if only two ingredients were missing to make a real change in the planet’s trajectory possible? This book invites you to discover these two ingredients: they are an improved environmental awareness and a renewed worldview adapted to this new awareness.
This book guides us in this change by presenting:
The essential bases (current state of the planet, greenhouse gases, carbon sinks, etc.) to better understand the issues, and a structured method to guide our choices.
Principles derived from indigenous traditional knowledge and promoting a life in harmony with nature.
Circular economy and nature’s rights, as well as many initiatives demonstrating that a change of course is well underway.
Dozens of direct links to references on the web, for further reading, and to the web sites of many organizations that contribute to this change.

This nebulous stretch of terrain in the Uinta Basin has hosted numerous sightings of blue orbs, UFOs, wolfmen, Bigfoot and practically every other paranormal bogeyman you could think of. Despite these heady tales of the bizarre, the outside world knew very little about the strange happenings at Skinwalker Ranch until fairly recently. But for the Native Americans of the region, the history of high strangeness goes back at least 1,000 years.

Deep in their ancestral memory, frightening tales of the skin-walker roam across their consciousness. The dread is so great, in fact, that many residents of the nearby Ute Indian Reservation still refuse to set foot in the area known as Skinwalker Ranch. For them, the land is hopelessly cursed and to be avoided at all costs. But for the purpose of this book, we are going to cast these ancient words of wisdom to the wayside and delve right into the thick of things.

Come along with us as we march headlong right into the uncertain and unsettling world of the unknownâ??right into Skinwalker Ranch!

Quantum Mechanics and the Philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead (American Philosophy Book 14)

by Michael Epperson

In Process and Reality and other works, Alfred North Whitehead struggled to come to terms with the impact the new science of quantum mechanics would have on metaphysics.

This ambitious book is the first extended analysis of the intricate relationships between relativity theory, quantum mechanics, and Whitehead’s cosmology. Michael Epperson illuminates the intersection of science and philosophy in Whitehead’s work-and details Whitehead’s attempts to fashion an ontology coherent with quantum anomalies.

Including a nonspecialist introduction to quantum mechanics, Epperson adds an essential new dimension to our understanding of Whitehead-and of the constantly enriching encounter between science and philosophy in our century.

Foundations of Quantum Theory: From Classical Concepts to Operator Algebras (Fundamental Theories of Physics Book 188)

by Klaas Landsman

This book studies the foundations of quantum theory through its relationship to classical physics. This idea goes back to the Copenhagen Interpretation (in the original version due to Bohr and Heisenberg), which the author relates to the mathematical formalism of operator algebras originally created by von Neumann. The book therefore includes comprehensive appendices on functional analysis and C*-algebras, as well as a briefer one on logic, category theory, and topos theory. Matters of foundational as well as mathematical interest that are covered in detail include symmetry (and its “spontaneous” breaking), the measurement problem, the Kochen-Specker, Free Will, and Bell Theorems, the Kadison-Singer conjecture, quantization, indistinguishable particles, the quantum theory of large systems, and quantum logic, the latter in connection with the topos approach to quantum theory.

The Mathematical Imagination: On the Origins and Promise of Critical Theory

by Matthew Handelman

As Horkheimer and Adorno first conceived of it, critical theory steadfastly opposed the mathematization of thought. Mathematics signaled a dangerous positivism that led reason to the barbarism of the Second World War. Yet drawn to the austerity and muteness of mathematics, friends and forerunners of the Frankfurt School found in mathematical negativity strategies to capture the marginalized experiences and perspectives of Jews in Germany. Handelman shows how an engagement with mathematics uncovers a more capacious vision of the critical project, one with tools that can help us intervene in our digital and increasingly mathematical present.

Correlation Is Not Causation: Learn How to Avoid the 5 Traps That Even Pros Fall Into (Bite-Size Stats Book 3)

by Lee Baker

Correlation Is Not Causation.
You know it and I know it, and yet we are constantly having to be reminded of it because we can’t seem to help but get it wrong.

How many times have you heard someone really smart say something like â??wow, this correlation has a p-value of 0.000001 so A must be causing Bâ?¦’?
It’s not our fault though – we’re only human. We seek explanation for patterns and events that happen around us, and if something defies logic, we try to find a reason why it might make sense. If something doesn’t add up, we make it up.

OK, so if correlation does not necessarily imply causation, there must be a reason for that, and there must be something that is causing what we observe. That is what this book is all about.

If we discover a correlation between a pair of variables there are five alternatives to one being the direct cause of the other, and we’ll unmask all five in this book.
Then, once we understand each of these alternatives, we’ll formulate a plan to discover whether we have a direct causal link or whether there is some other explanation.

Correlation Is Not Causation explains how to systematically test for the five most common correlation-causation pitfalls that even the pros fall into (occasionally). We’ll learn to create strategies to analyse the data and interpret the results in a way that is easy to understand.
Best of all, there is no technical or statistical jargon – it is written in plain English.
It is packed with visually intuitive examples and makes no assumptions about your previous experience with correlations – in short, it is perfect for beginners!

Discover the world of correlation and causation. Get this book, TODAY!

Hack your mating: An evolutionary psychologist’s guide to a life of sexual abundance

by Tony Vakirtzis

Women can be a very passionate affair, but to reverse a failing or mediocre mating life you need to set passion aside and approach the problem rationally. This is what this book is about, the rational path to sexual abundance.

The average man in the United States will have sex with around five or six women in his life, and he probably won´t be crazy for most of them. Divorce rates are at 50%. The “seduction” industry and online dating have never been bigger. Clearly men aren’t happy with the quantity or quality of their women. The reason, as you will see, is that we are hardwired with emotions that evolved during ancient social environments that were unrecognizable to today’s. Those ancient environments are long gone, but the emotions and behaviors they created are still with us, because the genes that create our brain evolve painfully slow. But modern social conditions have never been more favourable for the common man. The sex life of a king is yours for the taking. All you need is to adjust your mating behavior to the social reality of the 21st century. That’s it. I will show you how this is done.

I won’t promise you that when you’re finished reading you’ll be able to have any woman you want. You won’t. Nor will I promise a secret technique that will effortlessly have women approaching you. Unless you’re a celebrity or a millionaire, that’s never going to happen, and we’ll see why in the first two chapters. Freeing yourself from these destructive ideas is half the game, and if you are willing to abandon them I can assure you no other book will transform your relationship with women as quickly and dramatically. It is your best chance of turning the corner and joining the elite group of men who can have more women than they know what to do with.

In 2010, NASA and the National Science Foundation asked the National Research Council to assemble a committee of experts to develop an integrated national strategy that would guide agency investments in solar and space physics for the years 2013-2022. That strategy, the result of nearly 2 years of effort by the survey committee, which worked with more than 100 scientists and engineers on eight supporting study panels, is presented in the 2013 publication, Solar and Space Physics: A Science for a Technological Society. This booklet, designed to be accessible to a broader audience of policymakers and the interested public, summarizes the content of that report.

Vinazas: The Tequila Industryâ??s Dirty Little Secret: A Responsible Consumerâ??s Guide to Finding the Best Tequilas to Purchase and Drink

by M.A. “Mike” Morales

From August 2 to August 6, 2008, I was invited to join small batch distiller, David Suro of tequila Siembra Azúl, and a host of other educators and key people studying the cultural, anthropological, historical, and ecological aspects of the tequila industry in the beautiful Highlands of Jalisco, Mexico.

We would concentrate on touring distilleries specifically in Arandas and Atotonilco. David’s plan was to gather these brilliant minds together in one place and videotape a round table discussion of the issues currently affecting the Los Altos region.

Among the participants was Doctor of Anthropolgy, José de Jesús Hernández López (Pepe to his friends) from the Centro Universitario de Los Altos. He would be, and still is, my guide for this investigation.

Is your favorite brand of tequila eco-friendly, or are you directly contributing to the uncontrolled watershed pollution of the Paisaje Agavero by supporting your brand’s total disregard for the environment?

The time has come to not only drink responsibly, but to also think responsibly and purchase accordingly. This book is here to help you do just that – become a better informed consumer of agave spirits.

M.A. “Mike” Morales is a tequila tastemaker and agave spirit influencer. His long-running spirits review show on, Sipping Off the Cuff, has run for over 1000 episodes and counting, reviewing tequila, mezcal, sotol, raicilla, and bacanora. His experience and expertise in the agave spirits industry has made him a sought-after consultant, experienced journalist, and significant source for many national and international publications. Mike has been a life-long bodybuilder and die-hard Dodgers fan, enjoys training table food, good cigars, fine living and traveling with his family, 4 cats and 3-legged dog.

Loss and Damage from Climate Change: Concepts, Methods and Policy Options (Climate Risk Management, Policy and Governance)

This book provides an authoritative insight on the Loss and Damage discourse by highlighting state-of-the-art research and policy linked to this discourse and articulating its multiple concepts, principles and methods. Written by leading researchers and practitioners, it identifies practical and evidence-based policy options to inform the discourse and climate negotiations.
With climate-related risks on the rise and impacts being felt around the globe has come the recognition that climate mitigation and adaptation may not be enough to manage the effects from anthropogenic climate change. This recognition led to the creation of the Warsaw International Mechanism on Loss and Damage in 2013, a climate policy mechanism dedicated to dealing with climate-related effects in highly vulnerable countries that face severe constraints and limits to adaptation.  Endorsed in 2015 by the Paris Agreement and effectively considered a third pillar of international climate policy, debate and research on Loss and Damage continues to gain enormous traction. Yet, concepts, methods and tools as well as directions for policy and implementation have remained contested and vague.
Suitable for researchers, policy-advisors, practitioners and the interested public, the book furthermore:
-         discusses the political, legal, economic and institutional dimensions of the issue-         highlights normative questions central to the discourse
-         provides a focus on climate risks and climate risk management.
-         presents salient case studies from around the world.

Atkins diet Guide 2019

by H Rathour

When it comes to the Atkins diet, your success will lie in your planning. Making sure you have the proper foods on hand when you begin your diet will go a long way toward your ongoing weight loss. There are many suggestions for Atkins diet meals in the Atkins books, and there are plenty of resources online for Atkins and low-carb recipes.

Planning your meals and snacks will be an important part of your life when you are on this diet. That advice really goes for any diet. When you eat whatever you like, you gain weight. Your current weight and health problems are a direct result of letting your eating habits go unchecked for so long.

As with all diet plans, becoming used to the Atkins way of eating is going to take some time and adjustment. The standard American diet relies heavily on carbohydrates and other restricted foods. Many people grew up on carbohydrate heavy favorites like spaghetti and meatballs, meat and potatoes and pasta casserole. It is going to take some effort and patience to get used to eating in an entirely new way.

Science or Fiction? The Phony Side of Particle Physics

by Ofer Comay

Countries across the globe invest tens of billions in particle physics, which relies on the Standard Model. This model is styled by its proponents as “the most accurate theory in history, in any field.”
This book presents a long series of failures found with the theory: its inability to explain basic phenomena known since the 1930s; its prediction of particles and materials that have refused to be uncovered even in lunar rocks; the growing recognition that basic assumptions underlying the model are incorrect; and more.
This is the first time these well-documented data have been compiled in a simple and coherent fashion, allowing science enthusiasts to understand the scientific failures and the sociological reasons for scientists’ inability to openly discuss these flaws. Only a few dare to express their doubts:
“Ironically, from the perspective of QCD,
the foundations of nuclear physics appear distinctly unsound.”
â??Frank Wilczek, Nobel laureate, 2004
(QCD is a central part of the Standard Model.)

The Metaphysics of Experience: A Companion to Whitehead’s Process and Reality (American Philosophy Book 8)

by Elizabeth Kraus

The Metaphysics of Experience styles itself as “a Sherpa guide to Process and Reality, whose function is to assist the serious reader in grasping the meaning of the text and to prevent falls into misinterpretation.” Although originally published in 1925, Process and Reality has perhaps even more relevance to the contemporary scene in physics, biology, psychology, and the social sciences than it had in the mid-twenties. Hence its internal difficulty, its quasi-inaccessibility, is all the more tragic, since, unlike most metaphysical endeavors, it is capable of interpreting and unifying theories in the above sciences in terms of an organic world view, instead of selecting one theory as the paradigm and reducing all others to it. Because Alfred North Whitehead is so crucial to modern philosophy, The Metaphysics of Experience plays an important role in making Process and Reality accessible to a wider readership.

Graphs Donâ??t Lie: How to Lie with Graphs and Get Away With Itâ?¦ (Bite-Size Stats Series Book 2)

by Lee Baker

Sarah Palin, abortions, global warming and Usain Bolt. The CEO of Apple, 35 trillion gun deaths in 1995, Fox News and 193%. This book has got scandals galore!
With 9 witty chapters taking you on a roller coaster tour of graphical lies, pictorial deceits and pie charts of mayhem, this might just be the most entertaining book about graphs you’ll read this year.

Did you know that between them, Sarah Palin, Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney enjoyed a total of 193% support from Republican candidates in the 2012 US primaries? It must be true – it was on a pie chart broadcast on Fox News. Did you also know that the number 34 is smaller than 14, and zero is much bigger than 22? Honest, it’s true, it was published in a respectable national newspaper after the 2017 UK General Election. There can’t have been any kind of misdirection here because they were all shown on a pie chart.
In this astonishing book, award winning statistician and author Lee Baker uncovers how politicians, the press, corporations and other statistical conmen use graphs and charts to deceive their unwitting audience. Like how a shocking, and yet seemingly innocuous statement as “Every year since 1950, the number of children gunned down has doubled”, meant that there should have been at least 35 trillion gun deaths in 1995 alone, the year the quote was printed in a reputable journal. Or how an anti-abortion group made their point by trying to convince us all that 327,000 is actually a larger number than 935,573. Nice try, but no cigar – we weren’t born yesterday.
In his trademark sardonic style, the author reveals the secrets of how the statistical hustlers use graphs and charts to manipulate and misrepresent for political or commercial gain – and often get away with it.
Written as a layman’s guide to lying, cheating and deceiving with graphs, there’s not a dull page in sight! And it’s got elephants in it tooâ?¦

Discover the exciting world of lying with graphs and charts. Get this book, TODAY!

The Challenge of Chance: A Multidisciplinary Approach from Science and the Humanities (The Frontiers Collection)

by Klaas Landsman

This book presents a multidisciplinary perspective on chance, with contributions from distinguished researchers in the areas of biology, cognitive neuroscience, economics, genetics, general history, law, linguistics, logic, mathematical physics, statistics, theology and philosophy. The individual chapters are bound together by a general introduction followed by an opening chapter that surveys 2500 years of linguistic, philosophical, and scientific reflections on chance, coincidence, fortune, randomness, luck and related concepts. A main conclusion that can be drawn is that, even after all this time, we still cannot be sure whether chance is a truly fundamental and irreducible phenomenon, in that certain events are simply uncaused and could have been otherwise, or whether it is always simply a reflection of our ignorance. Other challenges that emerge from this book include a better understanding of the contextuality and perspectival character of chance (including its scale-dependence), and the curious fact that, throughout history (including contemporary science), chance has been used both as an explanation and as a hallmark of the absence of explanation. As such, this book challenges the reader to think about chance in a new way and to come to grips with this endlessly fascinating phenomenon.

Bird Species: How They Arise, Modify and Vanish (Fascinating Life Sciences)

The average person can name more bird species than they think, but do we really know what a bird “species” is? This open access book takes up several fascinating aspects of bird life to elucidate this basic concept in biology. From genetic and physiological basics to the phenomena of bird song and bird migration, it analyzes various interactions of birds – with their environment and other birds. Lastly, it shows imminent threats to birds in the Anthropocene, the era of global human impact.

Although it seemed to be easy to define bird species, the advent of modern methods has challenged species definition and led to a multidisciplinary approach to classifying birds. One outstanding new toolbox comes with the more and more reasonably priced acquisition of whole-genome sequences that allow causative analyses of how bird species diversify.

Speciation has reached a final stage when daughter species are reproductively isolated, but this stage is not easily detectable from the phenotype we observe. Culturally transmitted traits such as bird song seem to speed up speciation processes, while another behavioral trait, migration, helps birds to find food resources, and also coincides with higher chances of reaching new, inhabitable areas. In general, distribution is a major key to understanding speciation in birds. Examples of ecological speciation can be found in birds, and the constant interaction of birds with their biotic environment also contributes to evolutionary changes. In the Anthropocene, birds are confronted with rapid changes that are highly threatening for some species. Climate change forces birds to move their ranges, but may also disrupt well-established interactions between climate, vegetation, and food sources.

This book brings together various disciplines involved in observing bird species come into existence, modify, and vanish. It is a rich resource for bird enthusiasts who want to understand various processes at the cutting edge of current research in more detail. At the same time it offers students the opportunity to see primarily unconnected, but booming big-data approaches such as genomics and biogeography meet in a topic of broad interest. Lastly, the book enables conservationists to better understand the uncertainties surrounding “species” as entities of protection.

Clinical Text Mining: Secondary Use of Electronic Patient Records

by Hercules Dalianis

This open access book describes the results of natural language processing and machine learning methods applied to clinical text from electronic patient records.

It is divided into twelve chapters. Chapters 1-4 discuss the history and background of the original paper-based patient records, their purpose, and how they are written and structured. These initial chapters do not require any technical or medical background knowledge. The remaining eight chapters are more technical in nature and describe various medical classifications and terminologies such as ICD diagnosis codes, SNOMED CT, MeSH, UMLS, and ATC. Chapters 5-10 cover basic tools for natural language processing and information retrieval, and how to apply them to clinical text. The difference between rule-based and machine learning-based methods, as well as between supervised and unsupervised machine learning methods, are also explained. Next, ethical concerns regarding the use of sensitive patient records for research purposes are discussed, including methods for de-identifying electronic patient records and safely storing patient records. The book’s closing chapters present a number of applications in clinical text mining and summarise the lessons learned from the previous chapters.

The book provides a comprehensive overview of technical issues arising in clinical text mining, and offers a valuable guide for advanced students in health informatics, computational linguistics, and information retrieval, and for researchers entering these fields.

Dog Breeds: A Concise Analysis of 10 Dog Breeds – History, Personality, Strengths, Weaknesses and More!!

by Helena Troy

Choosing the perfect dog can be confusing, especially for first-time owners…

It’s easy to fall in love with a breed and rush into buying a gorgeous Border Collie or an intimidating Doberman Pinscher, but this is a mistake! Buying a dog should be a long, careful process – a new dog is, after all, a new family member and Every dog deserves more than a loving home – they deserve the right loving home!

There are a number of things that potential dog owners need to consider before making the leap. Does the dog breed you’ve fallen in love with fit in with your lifestyle? If you work eight hours a day, can the dog be left on its own in your home, or will it become stressed and destructive? If you have other pets, will the dog get along with them? Is the dog child-friendly, or will it quickly lose patience?

It works both ways; a new dog must fit in with their owner’s lifestyle, but new owners also need to have the skills and patience necessary to provide adequate care for their new canine companion. Prospective dog owners should ask themselves, Do I have the time to give this breed all the exercise it needs? Do I have the energy to keep up with them? Am I willing to buy it a doggie jacket when the weather gets chilly? Do I want a mellow lap dog or an excitable adventuring buddy?

This preview book will analyze 10 unique dog breeds in terms of their protection ability, trainability, playfulness, exercise needs and adaptability. Should you like what you see, I invite you to look at an advanced version of this book - Dog Breeds: A Concise Analysis of 50 Dog Breeds – History, Personality, Strengths, Weaknesses and More!!

Communicating Climate Change: A Guide for Educators (Cornell Series in Environmental Education)

by Anne K. Armstrong

Environmental educators face a formidable challenge when they approach climate change due to the complexity of the science and of the political and cultural contexts in which people live. There is a clear consensus among climate scientists that climate change is already occurring as a result of human activities, but high levels of climate change awareness and growing levels of concern have not translated into meaningful action. Communicating Climate Change provides environmental educators with an understanding of how their audiences engage with climate change information as well as with concrete, empirically tested communication tools they can use to enhance their climate change program.

Starting with the basics of climate science and climate change public opinion, Armstrong, Krasny, and Schuldt synthesize research from environmental psychology and climate change communication, weaving in examples of environmental education applications throughout this practical book. Each chapter covers a separate topic, from how environmental psychology explains the complex ways in which people interact with climate change information to communication strategies with a focus on framing, metaphors, and messengers. This broad set of topics will aid educators in formulating program language for their classrooms at all levels. Communicating Climate Change uses fictional vignettes of climate change education programs and true stories from climate change educators working in the field to illustrate the possibilities of applying research to practice. Armstrong et al, ably demonstrate that environmental education is an important player in fostering positive climate change dialogue and subsequent climate change action.

An open access version of this book is available through Cornell Open.

Everything Flows: Towards a Processual Philosophy of Biology

This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International licence. It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations.

Everything Flows explores the metaphysical thesis that the living world is not made up of substantial particles or things, as has often been supposed, but is rather constituted by processes. The biological domain is organised as an interdependent hierarchy of processes, which are stabilized and actively maintained at different timescales. Even entities that intuitively appear to be paradigms of things, such as organisms, are actually better understood as processes. Unlike previous
attempts to articulate processual views of biology, which have tended to use Alfred North Whitehead’s panpsychist metaphysics as a foundation, this book takes a naturalistic approach to metaphysics. It submits that the main motivations for replacing an ontology of substances with one of processes are to be found
in the empirical findings of science. Biology provides compelling reasons for thinking that the living realm is fundamentally dynamic, and that the existence of things is always conditional on the existence of processes. The phenomenon of life cries out for theories that prioritise processes over things, and it suggests that the central explanandum of biology is not change but rather stability, or more precisely, stability attained through constant change. This edited volume brings together
philosophers of science and metaphysicians interested in exploring the prospects of a processual philosophy of biology. The contributors draw on an extremely wide range of biological case studies, and employ a process perspective to cast new light on a number of traditional philosophical problems, such
as identity, persistence, and individuality.

The Archaeology of Human Ancestry: Power, Sex and Tradition (THEORETICAL ARCHAEOLOGY GROUP (SERIES))

by Stephen Shennan

Human social life is constrained and defined by our cognitive and emotional dispositions, which are the legacy of our foraging ancestors. But how difficult is it to reconstruct the social systems and cultural traditions of those ancestors?
The Archaeology of Human Ancestry provides a stimulating and provocative answer, in which archaeologists and biological anthropologists set out and demonstrate their reconstructive methods. Contributors use observations of primates and modern hunter-gatherers to illuminate the fossil and artefactual records. Thematic treatment covers the evolution of group size; group composition and the emotional structure of social bonds; sexual dimorphism and the sexual division of labour; and the origins of human cultural traditions.
The Archaeology of Human Ancestry is an essential introduction to the subject for advanced undergraduates and researchers in archaeology and biological anthropology. It will also be used by workers in psychology, sociology and feminist studies as a resource for understanding human social origins.

The Cellular Automaton Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics (Fundamental Theories of Physics Book 185)

by Gerard ‘t Hooft

This book presents the deterministic view of quantum mechanics developed by Nobel Laureate Gerard ‘t Hooft.

Dissatisfied with the uncomfortable gaps in the way conventional quantum mechanics meshes with the classical world, ‘t Hooft has revived the old hidden variable ideas, but now in a much more systematic way than usual. In this, quantum mechanics is viewed as a tool rather than a theory.

The author gives examples of models that are classical in essence, but can be analysed by the use of quantum techniques, and argues that even the Standard Model, together with gravitational interactions, might be viewed as a quantum mechanical approach to analysing a system that could be classical at its core. He shows how this approach, even though it is based on hidden variables, can be plausibly reconciled with Bell’s theorem, and how the usual objections voiced against the idea of â??superdeterminism’ can be overcome, at least in principle.

This framework elegantly explains – and automatically cures – the problems of the wave function collapse and the measurement problem. Even the existence of an “arrow of time” can perhaps be explained in a more elegant way than usual. As well as reviewing the author’s earlier work in the field, the book also contains many new observations and calculations. It provides stimulating reading for all physicists working on the foundations of quantum theory.

One Hundred Years of Chemical Warfare: Research, Deployment, Consequences

by Bretislav Friedrich

This book is open access under a CC BY-NC 2.5 license. On April 22, 1915, the German military released 150 tons of chlorine gas at Ypres, Belgium. Carried by a long-awaited wind, the chlorine cloud passed within a few minutes through the British and French trenches, leaving behind at least 1,000 dead and 4,000 injured. This chemical attack, which amounted to the first use of a weapon of mass destruction, marks a turning point in world history. The preparation as well as the execution of the gas attack was orchestrated by Fritz Haber, the director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry in Berlin-Dahlem. During World War I, Haber transformed his research institute into a center for the development of chemical weapons (and of the means of protection against them).Bretislav Friedrich and Martin Wolf (Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society, the successor institution of Haber’s institute) together with Dieter Hoffmann, Jürgen Renn, and Florian Schmaltz (Max Planck Institute for the History of Science) organized an international symposium to commemorate the centenary of the infamous chemical attack. The symposium examined crucial facets of chemical warfare from the first research on and deployment of chemical weapons in WWI to the development and use of chemical warfare during the century hence. The focus was on scientific, ethical, legal, and political issues of chemical weapons research and deployment â?? including the issue of dual use â?? as well as the ongoing effort to control the possession of chemical weapons and to ultimately achieve their elimination. The volume consists of papers presented at the symposium and supplemented by additional articles that together cover key aspects of chemical warfare from 22 April 1915 until the summer of 2015.

With the development of new direct interfaces between the human brain and computer systems, the time has come for an in-depth ethical examination of the way these neuronal interfaces may support an interaction between the mind and cyberspace.

In so doing, this book does not hesitate to blend disciplines including neurobiology, philosophy, anthropology and politics. It also invites society, as a whole, to seek a path in the use of these interfaces enabling humanity to prosper while avoiding the relevant risks. As such, the volume is the first extensive study in cyberneuroethics, a subject matter which is certain to have a significant impact in the 21st century and beyond.

The Illusion of Risk Control: What Does it Take to Live With Uncertainty? (SpringerBriefs in Applied Sciences and Technology)

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license.

This book explores the implications of acknowledging uncertainty and black swans for regulation of high-hazard technologies, for stakeholder acceptability of potentially hazardous activities and for risk governance. The conventional approach to risk assessment, which combines the likelihood of an event and the severity of its consequences, is poorly suited to situations where uncertainty and ambiguity are prominent features of the risk landscape. The new definition of risk used by ISO, “the effect of uncertainty on [achievement of] one’s objectives”, recognizes this paradigm change. What lessons can we draw from the management of fire hazards in Edo-era Japan? Are there situations in which increasing uncertainty allows more effective safety management? How should society address the risk of potentially planet-destroying scientific experiments?

This book presents insights from leading scholars in different disciplines to challenge current risk governance and safety management practice.

Engenho de cana-de-açúcar na Paraíba: por uma sociologia da cachaça (Substractum) (Portuguese Edition)

by José Luciano Albino Barbosa

by J. Ángel Menéndez Díaz

Compositionality and Concepts in Linguistics and Psychology (Language, Cognition, and Mind Book 3)

by James A. Hampton

By highlighting relations between experimental and theoretical work, this volume explores new ways of addressing one of the central challenges in the study of language and cognition. The articles bring together work by leading scholars and younger researchers in psychology, linguistics and philosophy. An introductory chapter lays out the background on concept composition, a problem that is stimulating much new research in cognitive science. Researchers in this interdisciplinary domain aim to explain how meanings of complex expressions are derived from simple lexical concepts and to show how these meanings connect to concept representations. Traditionally, much of the work on concept composition has been carried out within separate disciplines, where cognitive psychologists have concentrated on concept representations, and linguists and philosophers have focused on the meaning and use of logical operators. This volume demonstrates an important change in this situation, where convergence points between these three disciplines in cognitive science are emerging and are leading to new findings and theoretical insights.   This book is open access under a CC BY license.

Water Resource Systems Planning and Management: An Introduction to Methods, Models, and Applications

by Daniel P. Loucks

This book is open access under a CC BY-NC 4.0 license.

This revised, updated textbook presents a systems approach to the planning, management, and operation of water resources infrastructure in the environment.  Previously published in 2005 by UNESCO and Deltares (Delft Hydraulics at the time), this new edition, written again with contributions from Jery R. Stedinger, Jozef P. M. Dijkman, and Monique T. Villars, is aimed equally at students and professionals.  It introduces readers to the concept of viewing issues involving water resources as a system of multiple interacting components and scales. It offers guidelines for initiating and carrying out water resource system planning and management projects.
It introduces alternative optimization, simulation, and statistical methods useful for project identification, design, siting, operation and evaluation and for studying post-planning issues. The authors cover both basin-wide and urban water issues and present ways of identifying and evaluating alternatives for addressing multiple-purpose and multi-objective water quantity and quality management challenges. Reinforced with cases studies, exercises, and media supplements throughout, the text is ideal for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in water resource planning and management as well as for practicing planners and engineers in the field.

The Cosmic Web: Scientific Field Models and Literary Strategies in the Twentieth Century

by N. Katherine Hayles

From the central concept of the fieldâ??which depicts the world as a mutually interactive whole, with each part connected to every other part by an underlying fieldâ?? have come models as diverse as quantum mathematics and Saussure’s theory of language. In The Cosmic Web, N. Katherine Hayles seeks to establish the scope of the field concept and to assess its importance for contemporary thought. She then explores the literary strategies that are attributable directly or indirectly to the new paradigm; among the texts at which she looks closely are Robert Pirsig’s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Nabokov’s Ada, D. H. Lawrence’s early novels and essays, Borges’s fiction, and Thomas Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow.

Designing Sustainable Technologies, Products and Policies: From Science to Innovation

This open access book provides insight into the implementation of Life Cycle approaches along the entire business value chain, supporting environmental, social and economic sustainability related to the development of industrial technologies, products, services and policies; and the development and management of smart agricultural systems, smart mobility systems, urban infrastructures and energy for the built environment. The book is based on papers presented at the 8th International Life Cycle Management Conference that took place from September 3-6, 2017 in Luxembourg, and which was organized by the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) and the University of Luxembourg in the framework of the LCM Conference Series.

Disasters: Core Concepts and Ethical Theories (Advancing Global Bioethics Book 11)

This Open Access Book is the first to examine disasters from a multidisciplinary perspective. Justification of actions in the face of disasters requires recourse both to conceptual analysis and ethical traditions. Part 1 of the book contains chapters on how disasters are conceptualized in different academic disciplines relevant to disasters. Part 2 has chapters on how ethical issues that arise in relation to disasters can be addressed from a number of fundamental normative approaches in moral and political philosophy. This book sets the stage for more focused normative debates given that no one book can be completely comprehensive. Providing analysis of core concepts, and with real-world relevance, this book should be of interest to disaster scholars and researchers, those working in ethics and political philosophy, as well as policy makers, humanitarian actors and intergovernmental organizations..

Secondary Analysis of Electronic Health Records

by MIT Critical Data

This book trains the next generation of scientists representing different disciplines to leverage the data generated during routine patient care. It formulates a more complete lexicon of evidence-based recommendations and support shared, ethical decision making by doctors with their patients. Diagnostic and therapeutic technologies continue to evolve rapidly, and both individual practitioners and clinical teams face increasingly complex ethical decisions. Unfortunately, the current state of medical knowledge does not provide the guidance to make the majority of clinical decisions on the basis of evidence. The present research infrastructure is inefficient and frequently produces unreliable results that cannot be replicated. Even randomized controlled trials (RCTs), the traditional gold standards of the research reliability hierarchy, are not without limitations. They can be costly, labor intensive, and slow, and can return results that are seldom generalizable to every patient population. Furthermore, many pertinent but unresolved clinical and medical systems issues do not seem to have attracted the interest of the research enterprise, which has come to focus instead on cellular and molecular investigations and single-agent (e.g., a drug or device) effects. For clinicians, the end result is a bit of a “data desert” when it comes to making decisions. The new research infrastructure proposed in this book will help the medical profession to make ethically sound and well informed decisions for their patients.

Beginnerâ??s Guide to Correlation Analysis: Learn The One Reason Your Correlation Results Are Probably Wrong (Bite-Size Stats Series Book 4)

by Lee Baker

Your correlation results are probably wrong. Sorry, but they are.

You see, there is one really important thing to know about your correlations that mean that whatever results you get you can’t be sure they are correct.
This book fixes that.

Correlation is a way of describing how a pair of variables change together as a result of their connection. In other words, if one of your variables changes, the other is likely to change too, and correlations measure by how much.
Correlation analysis is one of the most used – and misunderstood – statistical techniques. Most correlation results are wrong, and for one very good reason. In this book we’re going to understand just why this is, and learn how to fix it.

Beginner’s Guide to Correlation Analysis explains how to look at correlations with a focus on understanding the data, how to work with it, choose the right ways to analyse it, select the correct statistical tools and how to interpret the results in a way that is easy to understand.
Best of all, there is no technical or statistical jargon – it is written in plain English.
It is packed with visually intuitive examples and makes no assumptions about your previous experience with statistics or correlations – in short, it is perfect for beginners!

Micro-, Meso- and Macro-Dynamics of the Brain (Research and Perspectives in Neurosciences)

This book brings together leading investigators who represent various aspects of brain dynamics with the goal of presenting state-of-the-art current progress and address future developments.

The individual chapters cover several fascinating facets of contemporary neuroscience from elementary computation of neurons, mesoscopic network oscillations, internally generated assembly sequences in the service of cognition, large-scale neuronal interactions within and across systems, the impact of sleep on cognition, memory, motor-sensory integration, spatial navigation, large-scale computation and consciousness. Each of these topics require appropriate levels of analyses with sufficiently high temporal and spatial resolution of neuronal activity in both local and global networks, supplemented by models and theories to explain how different levels of brain dynamics interact with each other and how the failure of such interactions results in neurologic and mental disease. While such complex questions cannot be answered exhaustively by a dozen or so chapters, this volume offers a nice synthesis of current thinking and work-in-progress on micro-, meso- and macro- dynamics of the brain.

Entrepreneurial Cognition: Exploring the Mindset of Entrepreneurs

by Dean A. Shepherd

This open access book investigates the inter-relationship between the mind and a potential opportunity to explore the psychology of entrepreneurship. Building on recent research, this book offers a broad scope investigation of the different aspects of what goes on in the mind of the (potential) entrepreneur as he or she considers the pursuit of a potential opportunity, the creation of a new organization, and/or the selection of an entrepreneurial career. This book focuses on individuals as the level of analysis and explores the impact of the organization and the environment only inasmuch as they impact the individual’s cognitions. Readers will learn why some individuals and managers are able to able to identify and successfully act upon opportunities in uncertain environments while others are not. This book applies a cognitive lens to understand individuals’ knowledge, motivation, attention, identity, and emotions in the entrepreneurial process.

The Future of the Law of the Sea: Bridging Gaps Between National, Individual and Common Interests

This book is open access under a CC BY-NC 4.0 license.
It explores the diverse phenomena which are challenging the international law of the sea today, using the unique perspective of a simultaneous analysis of the national, individual and common interests at stake. This perspective, which all the contributors bear in mind when treating their own topic, also constitutes a useful element in the effort to bring today’s legal complexity and fragmentation to a homogenous vision of the sustainable use of the marine environment and of its resources, and also of the international and national response to maritime crimes. The volume analyzes the relevant legal frameworks and recent developments, focusing on the competing interests which have influenced State jurisdiction and other regulatory processes. An analysis of the competing interests and their developments allows us to identify actors and relevant legal and institutional contexts, retracing how and when these elements have changed over time.

Non-Equilibrium Social Science and Policy: Introduction and Essays on New and Changing Paradigms in Socio-Economic Thinking (Understanding Complex Systems)

by Jeffrey Johnson

The overall aim of this book, an outcome of the European FP7 FET Open NESS project, is to contribute to the ongoing effort to put the quantitative social sciences on a proper footing for the 21st century. A key focus is economics, and its implications on policy making, where the still dominant traditional approach increasingly struggles to capture the economic realities we observe in the world today – with vested interests getting too often in the way of real advances.

Insights into behavioral economics and modern computing techniques have made possible both the integration of larger information sets and the exploration of disequilibrium behavior. The domain-based chapters of this work illustrate how economic theory is the only branch of social sciences which still holds to its old paradigm of an equilibrium science – an assumption that has already been relaxed in all related fields of research in the light of recent advances in complex and dynamical systems theory and related data mining.

The other chapters give various takes on policy and decision making in this context. Written in nontechnical style throughout, with a mix of tutorial and essay-like contributions, this book will benefit all researchers, scientists, professionals and practitioners interested in learning about the ‘thinking in complexity’ to understand how socio-economic systems really work.

Safer Healthcare: Strategies for the Real World

by Charles Vincent

The authors of this book set out a system of safety strategies and interventions for managing patient safety on a day-to-day basis and improving safety over the long term. These strategies are applicable at all levels of the healthcare system from the frontline to the regulation and governance of the system.

There have been many advances in patient safety, but we now need a new and broader vision that encompasses care throughout the patient’s journey. The authors argue that we need to see safety through the patient’s eyes, to consider how safety is managed in different contexts and to develop a wider strategic and practical vision in which patient safety is recast as the management of risk over time. Most safety improvement strategies aim to improve reliability and move closer toward optimal care. However, healthcare will always be under pressure and we also require ways of managing safety when conditions are difficult.  We need to make more use of strategies concerned with detecting, controlling, managing and responding to risk. Strategies for managing safety in highly standardised and controlled environments are necessarily different from those in which clinicians constantly have to adapt and respond to changing circumstances.

This work is supported by the Health Foundation. The Health Foundation is an independent charity committed to bringing about better health and health care for people in the UK.
The charity’s aim is a healthier population in the UK, supported by high quality health care that can be equitably accessed. The Foundation carries out policy analysis and makes grants to front-line teams to try ideas in practice and supports research into what works to make people’s lives healthier and improve the health care system, with a particular emphasis on how to make successful change happen.
A key part of the work is to make links between the knowledge of those working to deliver health and health care with research evidence and analysis. The aspiration is to create a virtuous circle, using what works on the ground to inform effective policymaking and vice versa. Good health and health care are vital for a flourishing society. Through sharing what is known, collaboration and building people’s skills and knowledge, the Foundation aims to make a difference and contribute to a healthier population.

Biofuels and Sustainability: Holistic Perspectives for Policy-making (Science for Sustainable Societies)

This open access book presents a comprehensive analysis of biofuel use strategies from an interdisciplinary perspective using sustainability science. This interdisciplinary perspective (social science-natural science) means that the strategies and policy options proposed will have significant impacts on the economy and society alike. Biofuels are expected to contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, revitalizing economies in agricultural communities and alleviating poverty. However, despite these anticipated benefits, international organizations such as the FAO, OECD and UN have published reports expressing concerns that biofuel promotion may lead to deforestation, water pollution and water shortages. The impacts of biofuel use are extensive, cross-sectoral and complex, and as such, comprehensive analyses are required in order to assess the extent to which biofuels can contribute to sustainable societies.

Applying interdisciplinary sustainability science concepts and methodologies, the book helps to enhance the establishment of a sustainable society as well as the development of appropriate responses to a global need for urgent action on current issues related to biofuels.

Charles Peirce’s Theory of Scientific Method (American Philosophy Book 7)

by Francis E. Reilly

This book is an attempt to understand a significant part of the complex thought of Charles Sanders Peirce, especially in those areas which interested him most: scientific method and related philosophical questions. It is organized primarily from Peirce’s own writings, taking chronological settings into account where appropriate, and pointing out the close connections of several major themes in Peirce’s work which show the rich diversity of his thought and its systematic unity. Following an introductory sketch of Peirce the thinking and writer is a study of the spirit and phases of scientific inquiry, and a consideration of its relevance to certain outstanding philosophical views which Peirce held. This double approach is necessary because his views on scientific method are interlaces with a profound and elaborate philosophy of the cosmos. Peirce’s thought is unusually close-knit, and his difficulty as a writer lies in his inability to achieve a partial focus without bringing into view numerous connections and relations with the whole picture of reality. Peirce received some of the esteem he deserves when the publication of his Collected Papers began more than thirty-five years ago. Some reviewers and critics, however, have attempted to fit Peirce into their own molds in justification of a particular position; others have disinterestedly sought to present him in completely detached fashion. Here, the author has attempted to understand Peirce as Peirce intended himself to be understood, and has presented what he believes Perice’s philosophy of scientific method to be. He singles out for praise Peirce’s Greek insistence on the primacy of theoretical knowledge and his almost Teilhardian synthesis of evolutionary themes. Primarily philosophical, this volume analyzes Peirce’s thought using a theory of knowledge and metaphysics rather than formal logic.

Optics in Our Time

Light and light based technologies have played an important role in transforming our lives via scientific contributions spanned over thousands of years. In this book we present a vast collection of articles on various aspects of light and its applications in the contemporary world at a popular or semi-popular level. These articles are written by the world authorities in their respective fields. This is therefore a rare volume where the world experts have come together to present the developments in this most important field of science in an almost pedagogical manner.

This volume covers five aspects related to light. The first presents two articles, one on the history of the nature of light, and the other on the scientific achievements of Ibn-Haitham (Alhazen), who is broadly considered the father of modern optics. These are then followed by an article on ultrafast phenomena and the invisible world. The third part includes papers on specific sources of light, the discoveries of which have revolutionized optical technologies in our lifetime. They discuss the nature and the characteristics of lasers, Solid-state lighting based on the Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology, and finally modern electron optics and its relationship to the Muslim golden age in science.  The book’s fourth part discusses various applications of optics and light in today’s world, including biophotonics, art, optical communication, nanotechnology, the eye as an optical instrument, remote sensing, and optics in medicine. In turn, the last part focuses on quantum optics, a modern field that grew out of the interaction of light and matter. Topics addressed include atom optics, slow, stored and stationary light, optical tests of the foundation of physics, quantum mechanical properties of light fields carrying orbital angular momentum, quantum communication, and Wave-Particle dualism in action.

Dr. Benny Lo

Lecturer, The Hamlyn Centre, Imperial College of London

“This timely addition to the literature on sensors covers the broad complexity of sensing, sensor types, and the vast range of existing and emerging applications in a very clearly written and accessible manner.  It is particularly good at capturing the exciting possibilities that will occur as sensor networks merge with cloud-based â??big data’ analytics to provide a host of new applications that will impact directly on the individual in ways we cannot fully predict at present.  It really brings this home through the use of carefully chosen case studies that bring the overwhelming concept of ‘big data’ down to the personal level of individual life and health.”

Dermot Diamond

Director, National Centre for Sensor Research, Principal Investigator, CLARITY Centre for Sensor Web Technologies, Dublin City University

Sensor Technologies: Healthcare, Wellness and Environmental Applications takes the reader on an end-to-end journey of sensor technologies, covering the fundamentals from an engineering perspective, introducing how the data gleaned can be both processed and visualized, in addition to offering exemplar case studies in a number of application domains.  It is a must-read for those studying any undergraduate course that involves sensor technologies.  It also provides a thorough foundation for those involved in the research and development of applied sensor systems.  I highly recommend it to any engineer who wishes to broaden their knowledge in this area!”

Bayesian Methods in the Search for MH370 (SpringerBriefs in Electrical and Computer Engineering)

by Sam Davey

This book demonstrates how nonlinear/non-Gaussian Bayesian time series estimation methods were used to produce a probability distribution of potential MH370 flight paths. It provides details of how the probabilistic models of aircraft flight dynamics, satellite communication system measurements, environmental effects and radar data were constructed and calibrated. The probability distribution was used to define the search zone in the southern Indian Ocean.

The book describes particle-filter based numerical calculation of the aircraft flight-path probability distribution and validates the method using data from several of the involved aircraft’s previous flights. Finally it is shown how the Reunion Island flaperon debris find affects the search probability distribution.

On the one hand, falling costs and strong policies are promoting the rapid spread of solar energy and wind power all across the world. Solar power is one of the few bright spots among clean energy technologies as the world transitions away from fossil fuels. On the other hand, renewables make up only a fraction of global energy consumption. In the power sector, they still compete with fossil-fuel power plants; in the heat and transport sectors, which account for 80% of energy consumption, renewables still play a relatively marginal role.

The potential for increasing the role of renewables is massive: biofuels can be scaled up in transport, while bioenergy, solar thermal and geothermal energy can produce a larger share of heat for buildings and industry. Greater electrification, coupled with the increase in renewable electricity generation, is a key route to decarbonisation.

However, to realise this potential, strong policies, research, innovation and investment are needed. Only in this way will renewables be able to contribute to the emission reductions demanded by the Paris Climate Agreement and help us meet the Sustainable Development Goals, meant to provide access to affordable and reliable energy for all.

Demystifying Climate Models: A Users Guide to Earth System Models (Earth Systems Data and Models Book 2)

by Andrew Gettelman

This book demystifies the models we use to simulate present and future climates, allowing readers to better understand how to use climate model results. In order to predict the future trajectory of the Earth’s climate, climate-system simulation models are necessary. When and how do we trust climate model predictions? The book offers a framework for answering this question. It provides readers with a basic primer on climate and climate change, and offers non-technical explanations for how climate models are constructed, why they are uncertain, and what level of confidence we should place in them. It presents current results and the key uncertainties concerning them. Uncertainty is not a weakness but understanding uncertainty is a strength and a key part of using any model, including climate models. Case studies of how climate model output has been used and how it might be used in the future are provided. The ultimate goal of this book is to promote a better understanding of the structure and uncertainties of climate models among users, including scientists, engineers and policymakers.

Designing Environments for People with Dementia: A Systematic Literature Review (Emerald Points)

by Alison Bowes

This review systematically explores and assesses the quality of the evidence base for effective and supportive design of living environments for people living with Dementia.

Dementia is a major challenge for all countries, as the population with the condition is growing rapidly. Societies desperately need to identify measures which mean that they can continue to thrive with a large population of people who are cognitively impaired. Medical treatments are poor, and there is little indication of better medications appearing in the coming decades. There is urgent need for non-medical advances which can address the challenge including ensuring environments are conducive to living better with Dementia.
Whilst there is a lot of activity in this area of Dementia friendly design, the evidence base remains poorly synthesized and weak.

This book pulls evidence together to provide a solid reference point from which further research and further developments in the field of Dementia care and support can proceed.

The ebook edition of this title is Open Access and is freely available to read online.

Physical (A)Causality: Determinism, Randomness and Uncaused Events (Fundamental Theories of Physics Book 192)

by Karl Svozil

This open access book addresses the physical phenomenon of events that seem to occur spontaneously and without any known cause. These are to be contrasted with events that happen in a (pre-)determined, predictable, lawful, and causal way.

All our knowledge is based on self-reflexive theorizing, as well as on operational means of empirical perception. Some of the questions that arise are the following: are these limitations reflected by our models? Under what circumstances does chance kick in? Is chance in physics merely epistemic? In other words, do we simply not know enough, or use too crude levels of description for our predictions? Or are certain events ‘truly’, that is, irreducibly, random?

The book tries to answer some of these questions by introducing intrinsic, embedded observers and provable unknowns; that is, observables and procedures which are certified (relative to the assumptions) to be unknowable or undoable. A (somewhat iconoclastic) review of quantum mechanics is presented which is inspired by quantum logic. Postulated quantum (un-)knowables are reviewed. More exotic unknowns originate in the assumption of classical continua, and in finite automata and generalized urn models, which mimic complementarity and yet maintain value definiteness. Traditional conceptions of free will, miracles and dualistic interfaces are based on gaps in an otherwise deterministic universe.

The Pathologisation of Homosexuality in Fascist Italy: The Case of ‘G’ (Genders and Sexualities in History)

by Gabriella Romano

This open access book investigates the pathologisation of homosexuality during the fascist regime in Italy through an analysis of the case of G., a man with “homosexual tendencies” interned in the Collegno mental health hospital in 1928. No systematic study exists on the possibility that Fascism used internment in an asylum as a tool of repression for LGBT people, as an alternative to confinement on an island, prison or home arrests. This research offers evidence that in some cases it did.
The book highlights how the dictatorship operated in a low-key, shadowy and undetectable manner, bending pre-existing legislation. Its brutality was – and still is – difficult to prove. It also emphasises the ways in which existing stereotypes on homosexuality were reinforced by the regime propaganda in support of its so-called moralising campaign and how families, the police and the medical professionals joined forces in implementing this form of repression.

A Time for Metabolism and Hormones (Research and Perspectives in Endocrine Interactions)

Recent years have seen spectacular advances in the field of circadian biology. These have attracted the interest of researchers in many fields, including endocrinology, neurosciences, cancer, and behavior. By integrating a circadian view within the fields of endocrinology and metabolism, researchers will be able to reveal many, yet-unsuspected aspects of how organisms cope with changes in the environment and subsequent control of homeostasis. This field is opening new avenues in our understanding of metabolism and endocrinology. A panel of the most distinguished investigators in the field gathered together to discuss the present state and the future of the field. The editors trust that this volume will be of use to those colleagues who will be picking up the challenge to unravel how the circadian clock can be targeted for the future development of specific pharmacological strategies toward a number of pathologies.

Podcast MIllionaire 2019

by H. Rathour

Anyone can create a podcast and, regardless of the topic, find an online audience that shares the same interest and will subscribe to the feed, or “show,” to automatically receive new episodes. But podcasting is more than having this 15 minutes of fame. Educators are using podcasts to interact with their students. Terrestrial radio is using it to regain listeners. It’s even changing the way media covers and distributes news and entertainment, advertisers target pitches at consumers and companies design and sell their products and services.

by Isao Tanaka

This open access book brings out the state of the art on how informatics-based tools are used and expected to be used in nanomaterials research. There has been great progress in the area in which “big-data” generated by experiments or computations are fully utilized to accelerate discovery of new materials, key factors, and design rules. Data-intensive approaches play indispensable roles in advanced materials characterization. “Materials informatics” is the central paradigm in the new trend. “Nanoinformatics” is its essential subset, which focuses on nanostructures of materials such as surfaces, interfaces, dopants, and point defects, playing a critical role in determining materials properties. There have been significant advances in experimental and computational techniques to characterize individual atoms in nanostructures and to gain quantitative information. The collaboration of researchers in materials science and information science is growing actively and is creating a new trend in materials science and engineering.

Where There Is No Psychiatrist: A Mental Health Care Manual

by Vikram Patel

Mental illnesses are common and cause great suffering to individuals and communities everywhere in the world, but many health workers are more comfortable dealing with physical illness. This practical manual of mental health care is vital for community health workers, primary care nurses, social workers and primary care doctors, particularly in low-resource settings. This guide gives the reader a basic understanding of mental illness by describing more than thirty clinical problems associated with mental illness and uses a problem-solving approach to guide the reader through their assessment and management. Mental health issues as they arise in specific contexts are described – in refugee camps, in school health programmes, as well as in mental health promotion. The final section helps the reader to personalise for a particular location, for example, by entering local information on voluntary agencies, the names and costs of medicines and words in the local language for symptoms.

Food Anxiety in Globalising Vietnam

This open access book approaches the anxieties inherent in food consumption and production in Vietnam. The country’s rapid and recent economic integration into global agro-food systems and consumer markets spurred a new quality of food safety concerns, health issues and distrust in food distribution networks that have become increasingly obscured. This edited volume further puts the eating body centre stage by following how gendered body norms, food taboos, power structures and social differentiation shape people’s ambivalent relations with food. It uncovers Vietnam’s trajectories of agricultural modernisation against which consumers and producers manoeuvre amongst food self-sufficiency, security and abundance.
Food Anxiety in Globalising Vietnam is explicitly about â??dangerous’ food – regarding its materiality and meaning. It provides social science perspectives on anxieties related to food and surrounding discourses that travel between the local and the global, the individual and society and into the body. Therefore, the book’s lens of food anxiety matters for social theory and for understanding the embeddedness and discontinuities of food globalizations in Vietnam and beyond. Due to its rich empirical base, methodological approaches and thematic foci, it will appeal to scholars, practitioners and students alike.

Climate Change and Natural Disasters: Transforming Economies and Policies for a Sustainable Future

by Vinod Thomas

The Open Access version of this book, available at, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license

The start of the new millennium will be remembered for deadly climate-related disasters – the great floods in Thailand in 2011, Super Storm Sandy in the United States in 2012, and Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines in 2013, to name a few. In 2014, 17.5 million people were displaced by climate-related disasters, ten times more than the 1.7 million displaced by geophysical hazards. What is causing the increase in natural disasters and what effect does it have on the economy?  Climate Change and Natural Disasters sends three messages: human-made factors exert a growing influence on climate-related disasters; because of the link to anthropogenic factors, there is a pressing need for climate mitigation; and prevention, including climate adaptation, ought not to be viewed as a cost to economic growth but as an investment. Ultimately, attention to climate-related disasters, arguably the most tangible manifestation of global warming, may help mobilize broader climate action. It can also be instrumental in transitioning to a path of low-carbon, green growth, improving disaster resilience, improving natural resource use, and caring for the urban environment. Vinod Thomas proposes that economic growth will become sustainable only if governments, political actors, and local communities combine natural disaster prevention and controlling climate change into national growth strategies. When considering all types of capital, particularly human capital, climate action can drive economic growth, rather than hinder it.

Sustainability, Human Well-Being, and the Future of Education

by Justin W. Cook

This open access book explores the key dimensions of a future education system designed to enable individuals, schools, and communities to achieve the twin twenty-first century challenges of sustainability and human well-being. For much of the twentieth century, Western education systems prepared students to enter the workforce, contribute to society and succeed in relatively predictable contexts. Today, people are at the controls of the planetâ??making decisions that are dramatically reshaping social, economic, and environmental systems at a global scale. What is education’s purpose in this new reality? What and how must we learn now? The volatility and uncertainty caused by digitalization, globalization, and climate change weave a common backdrop through each chapter. Using case studies drawn from Finland and the US, chapter authors explore various aspects of learning and education system design through the lenses of sustainability and human well-being to evaluate how our understanding and practice of education must transform. Using their scholarly research and experience as practitioners, the authors propose new approaches to preparing learners for a new frontier of the human experience fraught with risks but full of opportunity.

Chaos Bound: Orderly Disorder in Contemporary Literature and Science

by N. Katherine Hayles

N. Katherine Hayles here investigates parallels between contemporary literature and critical theory and the science of chaos. She finds in both scientific and literary discourse new interpretations of chaos, which is seen no longer as disorder but as a locus of maximum information and complexity. She examines structures and themes of disorder in The Education of Henry Adams, Doris Lessing’s Golden Notebook, and works by Stanislaw Lem. Hayles shows how the writings of poststructuralist theorists including Barthes, Lyotard, Derrida, Serres, and de Man incorporate central features of chaos theory.

Targeted Individuals: How to Fight Back

by Richard Lighthouse

Rev. 2C – This short ebook describes some methods to fight back against the criminals of the Deep State. It does not involve violence of any kind, but has been proven to be very effective. The yard signs shown on the cover are one method, which informs FBI agents. The CIA runs the microwave torture program, and the FBI is in charge of the gangstalking. If we can break down the Deep State, then the microwaves will stop. Wake people up to the serious government corruption, and the microwaves will stop. Just making people aware of the government corruption, can be “domino effect” that will break down the Deep State.

One of the simplest ways to fight back is to inform FBI agents about 9-11, via There is enough information on the website, so that they can be certain that the CIA and Mossad were involved in the planning and murder of 3000 people. By doing this, you are turning their own agents against the agency. That’s a powerful weapon.

This simple yard sign can be a very effective tool. Place it along the public driveways that lead to the parking areas for FBI personnel at FBI buildings. Every major city has at least one FBI office. According to one whistleblower, about 50% of the FBI agents still have integrity and will respond to the obvious corruption. Other places to put up yard signs with, along public streets: Police Stations, Fire Departments, Government Contractors such as GE, Boeing, LockheedMartin, General Dynamics, Raytheon, Honeywell, Stratfor, Pratt & Whitney, SpaceX, and NASA facilities. These are smart people that will realize our government is lieing. And by doing this, you are recruiting whistleblowers that can do the most harm to the Deep State, without violence.

To fight back, it must be done without violence. If you are considering violence as an option, then this ebook will not help you. The CIA criminals want you to commit an act of violence. This helps to drive their propaganda for a greater police state. The ends never justify the means.

The FBI can be the best defense against the Deep State. There are many agents in the FBI that have integrity and an excellent sense of justice, even when their crooked bosses order it otherwise.

For additional details on the Deep State and the Shadow Government, I refer readers to the recent information of CIA Whistleblower, Kevin Shipp. Mr Shipp has provided details on many of the horrific activities of the CIA and how they control all of the other intelligence services. They also control many members of Congress by paying large bribes to them, when they vote the way that the CIA instructs them. Mr Shipp stated that the Big 5 intelligence contractors are:

1. Leidos Holdings
5. Booz Allen Hamilton

If you live close to one of these contractors, please put up some signs about DrJudyWood, or something similar.

The Appendix contains a link to Dr Daniel Lebowitz’s presentation to the Senate Committee Hearing on Civil Rights abuses, regarding Targeted Individuals.

What is scientific truth? (Humanity)

by J Horsfield @ Hearts Minds Media

What is truth? Scientific and moral truth – Our responsibility to all life.
by Hearts and Minds Media
What is a scientific truth?
Philosophers talk about the correspondence theories of truth: subjective, deductive, and inductive (scientific) truth.
– Is scientific truth constant or changeable?
– Is scientific truth all that is measured by experience?
– Scientific truth converges towards religious truth?
– Is the truth all that we believe, or do we have a greater responsibility?
How scientific knowledge changes.
‘The ideal of completely correct knowledge is a concept. Scientific knowledge keeps changing, and our ideas about truth change too. Dr. Terry Halwes’
It is not enough that you should understand about applied science in order that your work may increase man’s blessings. Concern for the man himself and his fate must always form the chief interest of all technical endeavours; concern for the great unsolved problems of the organization of labour and the distribution of goods in order that the creations of our mind shall be a blessing and not a curse to mankind. Never forget this in the midst of your diagrams and equations.
· Albert Einstein, speech at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California (February 16, 1931), as reported in The New York Times (February 17, 1931), p. 6.
There are many philosophical and historical theories as to how scientific consensus changes over time. The history of scientific change is extremely complicated, and there is a tendency to project “winners” and “losers” onto the past in relation to our current scientific consensus, it is very difficult to come up with accurate and rigorous models for scientific change. This is made exceedingly difficult also in part because each of the various branches of science functions in somewhat different ways with different forms of evidence and experimental approaches.
Most models of scientific change rely on new data produced by scientific experiment. Karl Popper proposed that since no amount of experiments could ever prove a scientific theory, but a single experiment could disprove one, science should be based on falsification

The Philosophy of Mathematics Education (ICME-13 Topical Surveys)

by Paul Ernest

This survey provides a brief and selective overview of research in the philosophy of mathematics education. It asks what makes up the philosophy of mathematics education, what it means, what questions it asks and answers, and what is its overall importance and use? It provides overviews of critical mathematics education, and the most relevant modern movements in the philosophy of mathematics. A case study is provided of an emerging research tradition in one country. This is the Hermeneutic strand of research in the philosophy of mathematics education in Brazil. This illustrates one orientation towards research inquiry in the philosophy of mathematics education. It is part of a broader practice of â??philosophical archaeology’: the uncovering of hidden assumptions and buried ideologies within the concepts and methods of research and practice in mathematics education. An extensive bibliography is also included.
