Russian Roulette: A crime thriller that packs a serious punch (Konstantin Book 1)

by Keith Nixon

A reluctant investigator, a sordid English seaside town, a criminal underbelly.

Trouble has a habit of seeking out Konstantin, whether he wants it or not. Starting from the moment he arrives in the seedy seaside town of Margate where he’s supposed to be in hiding from his ex-employers. All Konstantin wants is to keep his head down and be left alone. But it’s not to be. People have their problems and Konstantin can’t help but get involved.

Konstantin has to overcome the drug dealer, the loan shark and a Liverpudlian gangster. Then there’s the so-called good guys, the councilors and lawyers who are worse than the criminals. Enter Fidelity Brown, aka Plastic Fantastic, a dominatrix who has her own mélange of secrets and lies, and nightclub owner Ken who’s connected to all the wrong people. Both help Konstantin solve the cases dropped on his doorstep.

Cue deception, murder, mayhem as the Russian settles into his new life. Margate will never be the same again. And neither will Konstantinâ?¦

Meet the enigmatic Konstantin, a man with a dark history and darker future in the start of a unique crime thriller series laced with a healthy dose of black humour. Pick up Russian Roulette to find out what all the fuss is about.

Excerpt — (Part 4)

August was an especially hot month in Shanghai. Curt and I had been married and living in China for over a year.

At first, I was wary of Curt’s affection, because it was so unreal. However, he eventually wore me down. Only his father and some of our closest friends attended a small ceremony in Chicago. Curt’s mother had died of cancer in 2012.

Marriage initially provided me with security, because I no longer had to worry about money. However, it also imposed a variety of restrictions and expectations that I found incredibly stressful.

Where we lived was an oasis within the hectic city. I was practically within walking distance of a tranquil Buddhist Temple that dated back to the 7th century. But I was also steps away from millions of people fiercely pursuing their livelihood.

Bitter: Book One

by V. Moody

Fully immersive virtual reality gaming allows Britta to enter a fantasy world where she can be whoever she wants to be. She can be tall, she can be thin, she can be beautiful. So she decides to be a gnome â?? short, hairy and plump. She’s never looked for other people’s approval before, she certainly isn’t going to start now.

Bitter is an ongoing slice-of-life story about a girl who finds her life isn’t what she wanted, so she gets another one.

Also available as a daily online serial on MoodyLit.com. This book collects the first one hundred chapters in an edited form.

Flushed: A funny short story (The Meantime Stories Book 1)

by Svingen and Pedersen

“I was unable to stop reading this absurd and awfully seductive tale of power, politics and poo. Most highly recommended.” -Readers’ Favorite (5/5 STAR REVIEW)

Based on a very, very, very true story: During a summit, the President (unnamed, but it’s funny how we’re constantly asked: “Is it Trump?!”) faces his biggest challenge yet: A clogged toilet. What’s the man to do? Leave the bathroom and say nothing on the matter? Or, take matters into his own hands?

THE MEANTIME STORIES is a funny short read series that draws inspiration from Terry Pratchett, Monty Python, and Douglas Adams, drenched in Nordic Noir (human folly, plentiful abrupt deaths, snappy dialogue, quirky deep thoughts, and absurd outcomes). It’s glittering darkness, and clouded light.

Each story is a stand-alone, ready to be enjoyed when you yearn for 30 minutes of wacky, brainy, and laugh-out-loud entertainment. Longing for surprises, unexpected twists, and silliness with an edge? Look no further, because in the Meantime, anything can happen!

In Heaven There’s No Money, No Stuffâ?? and No Porta-Potties: Coping With Life’s Aggravations By Finding the Funny

by Mary Ann Hoyt

Mary Ann Hoyt’s collection of humorous essays are tongue-in-cheek views of her everyday observations and quirky experiences. The pages are filled with anecdotes about her fear of hummingbirds, the burial of the family cat in a cardboard box decorated with her son’s Grateful Dead pencil drawings, and her concern that, because of her unphotogenic smile, she won’t have enough decent photos for the obligatory collage at her funeral. Surviving an interstate move after retirement, with all its challenges and four adult children weighing in, gave her fodder for much to write about.

Mary Ann finds humor in all of life’s situations, both good and bad. With a mixture of satire and sentiment, this book will coax a smile (and maybe a tear or two) from even the most serious reader, who will identify with many, if not all of her stories.

Gay: Roommates (Gay Fiction, Gay Romance, First Time Gay, Gay Erotica)

by Whitney Wes

“You’re gorgeous,” breathed Joey, reaching out to touch her arm, making goose bumps appear on her skin.

“I’ve been wanting to do that all night,” Carl said.

“What are you doing,” Dale heard Jason’s voice from outside of the shower.
“I’m um,” Dale stammered unsure how he was supposed to respond, “I’m taking a shower.” He looked down at his cock, not willing to admit what he was really up to.

“Really,” Jason asked, as he pulled the shower curtain back, his eyes going directly to Dale’s cock.

Dale jumped and gave out a yelp. “I thought it was only fair, you have seen me naked so many times, but you walk around here fully clothed,” Jason smiled as his eyes wandered over Dale’s body.
Dale turned his back to Jason, wanting to tease him with his tight ass, but also wanting to hide his erect cock. “Well,” Dale said, looking back at Jason, “Not all of us have a body quite like yours.”

Jason stepped into the shower, “I’ve seen the way you look at me,” he said, reaching up and placing his hand son Dale’s shoulders. Dale could feel the head of Jason’s cock teasing his ass, just brushing up against it as Jason rubbed his shoulders. “What I don’t understand is why you haven’t done anything about it,” Jason stepped closer, his cock pressing in between Dales ass cheeks.

“I didn’t want to ruin things,” Dale replied, trying to catch his breathâ?¦”

The Shadow of the Rogue: The Rogue’s Gambit (The Rouge’s Gambit Book 1)

by Quinn Dallas

Trapped in a VRMMO- Will Cassie and friends make it out alive?

Hi, my name is Cassie James. I live with my parents in what’s left of Seattle. For a twenty year old girl, I’m pretty typical. To pay for my gaming habit, I work at the local supermarket. While the job is really tedious, it’s better than unemployment.

Most nights you can find me plugged in. That’s when I can get a moments peace from my parents drunken bickering. Still, my life was fairly boring, until I decided to try Odyssey Online! I’m super addicted to leveling Kira Nightwind, my Shadow Thief!

However, something’s gone terribly wrong!

You see, an epic level NPC has grown self-aware. And Grymme is not a dragon to be trifled with! He has mind-napped over five-hundred people. Leaving them trapped in the game. He’s also launched a massive offensive to take over Odyssey Online, one kingdom at a time. The only way to stop him, is to locate three legendary items. Each one containing an unlock that makes us players more powerful. The problem being Grymme has agents everywhere. And they are willing to do anything to win!

If that weren’t enough, I’m developing a serious girl crush on Shauna, a very cute Elf healer. With the help of Leonidas the Paladin, Cairngorm the Wizard, and Yvir the Barbarian, we might just defeat Grymme and win our freedom!

Lie of the Tiger (Windy Mountain Book 2)

by John Martin

How could secret doggy business possibly solve the enduring mystery of the Tasmanian Tiger?

Find out in this funny novel.
With a quirky character lurking around every corner, everyone has something to hide in this touching book — including the two old men who come up with the dog solution and a man who returns to town as a feared ex-con and finds he now has the chance to become a hero.
Lie of the Tiger starts the Windy Mountain Tasmanian Tiger series but it stands up just fine as a standalone.

PRAISE FROM READERS

TOUCHINGLY FUNNY: Great style of writing which engages and makes the book even more enjoyable. Character based, and likeable characters at that!

READ IT, laugh and then, like me, wait for the next instalment! I do hope that Mr Martin can write quickly.

IN A ROMP OF mistaken identities, hidden agendas, lost loves, and a group of wacky townsfolk, Paddy, Wish-Wash, and Oodles give their lives new meaning. This is thoroughly enjoyable read.

I REALLY enjoyed this crazy story about a couple of old coots that set out to solve a mystery and end up with more than one mystery on their plate. Lots of twists, turns, and humor spiced with bits of fun suspense thrown in to make this a very enjoyable read.

THIS NOVEL has laugh-out-loud-until-you-can’t-help-but-feel-good humor. John Martin’s forte is his funny, quirky characters and there is one around every corner of Windy Mountain.

A FUN READ THAT kept me entertained through the entire book. The characters were off the cuff and a little out of the box. The interesting phrases that the men used in the book left me in stitches at times.

THE WRITING has a nice turn of phrase: “The waitress had blonde hair colouring that probably came from a bottle. She had a husky voice, which sounded like the result of smoking too many cigarettes and eating too much gravel.” and “Since Gordo was the one with two good arms but a suspect brain, he drove where he was told” which really adds to the humour.

IT’S THE story of two funny old men and an Irishman trying to save a filthy and failing Tasmanian Tiger museum that is slated for destruction. Their schemes to save it are hilarious and their developing friendships are touching.

THE BOOK WAS a completely enjoyable read. Wish the author writes many more such fun-filled adventures.

JOHN MARTIN has a good grip on characters and their development, particularly the quirks. His writing rhythm is smooth and consistent. I laughed out loud enough that it makes me want to continue following his work.

THIS IS A very cute story set in Tasmania. The characters are quirky, funny and endearing. I had a good time reading it.

Fetch: A Novelette

by Mazy Morris

Cynthia is done with men. Fresh out of a disastrous relationship with her boss, she impulsively quits her job and opens up shop as a dog-walker. Dogs make much better company, anyway. What Cynthia doesn’t count on is her very first canine customer coming complete with a very persistent master determined to make Cynthia change her mind about giving up on true love.

This sweet romantic comedy is purely PG. It is a novelette* of approximately 13,000 words which can be read by an adult reader of average speed in about 45 minutes.

NOTE TO US READERS: This story has been automatically (and erroneously) inserted in the “Inspirational Romance” category by the Bots-That-Be, possibly because it’s described as being sweet and PG-rated. There are no Christian references or spiritual themes.

*What is a novelette? A novelette is shorter than a novella and longer than a short story–usually between 8,000 and 17,000 words long. Novelettes, like novellas, are intended to be completely self-contained stand-alone stories–although many authors are pushing the envelope on what qualifies as self-contained, so the term may be evolving. Many authors skip the novelette designation and call prose of this length a long short story. The term novella and novelette are also sometimes used interchangeably. Still confused? So are the rest of us :).

Parameters of Disavowal: Colonial Representation in South Korean Cinema (Global Korea Book 1)

by Jinsoo An

A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press’s Open Access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more.

The colonial experience of the early twentieth century shaped Korea’s culture and identity, leaving a troubling past that was subtly reconstructed in South Korean postcolonial cinema. Relating postcolonial discourses to a reading of Manchurian action films, kisaeng and gangster films, and revenge horror films, Parameters of Disavowal shows how filmmakers reworked, recontextualized, and erased ideas and symbols of colonial power. In particular, Jinsoo An examines how South Korean films privileged certain sites, such as the kisaeng house and the Manchurian frontier, generating unique meanings that challenged the domination of the colonial power, and how horror films indirectly explored both the continuing trauma of colonial violence and lingering emotional ties to the colonial order. Espousing the ideology of nationalism while responding to a new Cold War order that positioned Japan and South Korea as political and economic allies, postcolonial cinema formulated distinctive ways of seeing and imagining the colonial past.

Star-crossed to Star Dust

by Steven Wheelock

While orthodons and humans interbreed, a cruel star-civilization plots to render orthodons and humans extinct.

It was an era of mass surveillance, tyranny, and interstellar warfare aided and abetted by fiat money essentially created out of thin air.

The main character would be a man named Mole, who would find himself marooned on war-destroyed planet Earth, amongst other adventures. The novel’s cover image depicts bikini-clad Padparadscha (Mole’s wife) playfully flexing her muscles on her wedding night.

An excerpt from this satiric, horror-comedy space opera novel:

“Love is built upon a foundation of trust; I remember you saying that earlier.”

“‘Trust’ is the operative word,” Mole agreed. “Now where were we?”

“Talking about women.”

“Right … women,” Mole said stalling for time. Inwardly, he was disgusted with the Human Empire for having taught Victor math and engineering skills, and little else, save selected bits of history; and in spite of his disgust with humanity, said, “Most women desire to love thy neighbor, live honorable lives … stuff like that there.”

“And men?” Victor prodded.

“Yes, of course. The men. Let us not forget the men.” It was now darker inside the ship, rendering Victor color-blind, though he could still see considerably more than the one who was closer to the starlit airlock. “Most men,” Mole’s voice echoed through the old spacecraft, “desire to love thy neighbor, live honorable lives, love their women, and for the most part, do good deeds before their souls depart this material plane. Unfortunately, there’s a small percentage of men who desire to rule others with an iron fist. And that’s why human history is written in blood. All in all, I’d have to say women are slightly better than men.”

“Why’s that?”

Mole answered, “Women aren’t generally known for starting wars, and for turning once-beautiful planets like this one into vast wastelands; besides, it was men who pushed the buttons and unleashed nuclear war on this world. For that reason alone I’m inclined to believe women are better than men. But it’s still a very close call; after all, male or female it’s still the same species.”

THE SCHOOL REPORT: BEFORE WE WERE TSARS (The Shooting Star Series)

by Simon Northouse

A humorous look back at school reports of yesteryear when teachers could speak their mind without fear of retribution, litigation or trolling.

If you grew up in the 50’s 60’s 70’s or 80’s then you will laugh-out-loud as you recognise this school world and some of the cruel but fair, teachers in it. Based loosely on the author’s own school reports.

Excerpt: “Gordon shows good intent at navigating the classroom door, but after thatâ??well, it’s a race to the bottom. When I asked him who was the British Celtic Queen who rose up against the Roman invasion of ancient Briton he replied, “Janis Joplin” I rest my case.” Mr Fructose.

A companion short story to the full-length novel “Arc Of A Shooting Star”.

Ravensdale

by Lucinda Elliot

The author is proud to announce that this novel has become her second to win a B.R.A.G medallion for outstanding self-published fiction.

For those who love a satire on the cliches of historical romance, which at the same time draws them into the adventure.

When the group of highwaymen, headed by the disgraced Earl Ravensdale hold up the hoydenish Isabella Murray’s coach, she knocks one of them down and lectures them all on following Robin Hood’s example. In fact, she has been long resisting the urge to escape from her parents’ plans for her advantageous marriage and become one herself.

The rascally Reynaud Ravensdale – otherwise known as the dashing highwayman Mr Fox – is fascinated by her spirit.

He escaped abroad three years back when he fell under suspicion of shooting a friend dead after a quarrel. Rumour has it that his far more respectable cousin was involved. Now, having come back during his father’s last illness, the young Earl has largely lost hope of clearing his name of murder, living as an outlaw as he is, and having sworn to protect someone else who was involved in the quarrel.

Isabella’s ambitious parents are eager to marry her off to Ravensdale’s cousin, the next in line to his title. The totally unromantic Isabella is even ready to elope with her outlaw admirer to escape this fate – on condition that he teaches her how to be a highwaywoman herself.

This hilarious spoof uses vivid characters and lively comedy to bring new life to a theme traditionally favoured by historical novelists – that of the wild young Earl, who, falsely accused of murder by the machinations of a conniving cousin and prejudged by his reputation, takes up life as an outlaw.

â??Ravensdale’ is a fast paced, funny and light hearted read from the writer of â??That Scoundrel Ã?mile Dubois’, and follows the adventures of Ã?mile Dubois’ equally roguish cousin just prior to the outbreak of the French Revolutionary Wars. It can be read as an independent novel.
