Meating the American Way – Diary of a Sir Winston Churchill Fellow

by N R P Wilson

One of the ideals most firmly expressed by Sir Winston Churchill was that men and women from all walks of life should be able to travel overseas and learn about the life, work and people of other countries. In this way, as a result of personal experience gained during their travels, they would be able to make a more effective and valuable contribution to the life of this country and community.
When Sir Winston Churchill died on 24th January 1965, Trusts in the Commonwealth and United States of America were formed to perpetuate his memory, their aim being to provide Travelling Fellowships, the basis of which were discussed with him and approved before his death. The appeal to raise funds for the United Kingdom Trust was launched by Field Marshal Earl Alexander of Tunis. The donations came from thousands of people grateful for Sir Winston’s inspiration and leadership: one war widow sent a 2 1/2’d stamp because she could not afford more but did not want to be left out, old age pensioners gave up their pensions, industry and commerce sent cheques for sums of anything up to £25,000. All the donations were invested and the income they provide finances the Travelling Fellowships.
This is the diary of the travel and events of a Sir Winston Churchill Fellow where he travelled for five weeks across the U.S.A. in his efforts to relate some of the effects of animal handling on the subsequent quality of meat produced. It also details some of the people that he met and the sites he saw.
The Sir Winston Churchill Fellowships encourage the spread of knowledge and experience in individuals through travel and meeting people of different countries and cultures.

Incident at the Loch: A Northern Journey (part one)

by Geoffrey Peyton

Part one of a two week break in Ayrshire and Cumbria during a warm May in 1991. In this first part I hike from Ayr to Stranraer, sleeping in various wooded locations that are full of natural wildlife and magnificent lochs. Along the way I encounter close calls with the natural inhabitants, not to mention a couple of women who more than catch my eye. I ask the reader to excuse any grammatical hiccups, as I am just trying to tell a story. Thanks.

Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah: Discover India | Photojournals (Heritage of India Book 5)

by David Riley

Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah

The Tomb acts as the final resting place of Mirza Ghiyas Beg (father of Nur Jahan). Nur Jahan was the chief consort of the 4th Mughal Emperor Jahangir, and had a lot of power, because of which she was able to erect such a magnificent architectural marvel in the memory of her father. Mirza Ghiyas Beg himself was as powerful and important during the Mughal era in India. He served first under the famous Mughal Emperor Akbar (as a treasurer), and then under his son Jahangir (as the â??Grand Vizier’ of the Mughal Empire). It is because of his importance in the Mughal court that he got the title â??Itimad-ud-Daulah’, meaning â??pillar of the state.’

About the Series

Throughout the History of India, different empires flourished and fell again; but each civilization left its mark, in the form of beautifully constructed buildings and structures. These structures remind us of an era bygone. Some of them have stood the test of time, and have been brilliantly preserved. Others have deteriorated and lost their lustre, and lie in the form of ruins, giving just a hint of their glorious past. None the less, they form an important part of India’s history and represent the historicity of this amazing ancient land in the form of â??Heritage of India’.

This series aims to explore such structures (from different time periods) from around the country and bring it to you in the form of Discover India | Photojournals. It tells you all that you’d need to know about the heritage structure: before, during as well as after visiting the place. This is your perfect guide to know about the concerned structure, as well as enjoy a preview/souvenir with beautiful photographs of the heritage structures. So, enjoy the book and take it with you as you journey through India, exploring the vast array of heritage structures that India has to offer.

On the Road with Bronco Billy – A Trucking Journal

by Dale Olausen

What follows is an account of a ten day journey through western North America during a working trip, delivering lumber from Edmonton Alberta to Dallas Texas, and returning with oilfield equipment. The writer had the opportunity to accompany a friend who is a professional truck driver, which he eagerly accepted. He works as a statistician for the University of Alberta, and is therefore is generally confined to desk, chair, and computer. The chance to see the world from the cab of a truck, and be immersed in the truck driving culture was intriguing. In early May 1997 they hit the road.

Some time has passed since this journal was written and many things have changed since the late 1990’s. That renders the journey as not just a geographical one, but also a historical account, which I think only increases its interest.

We were fortunate to have an eventful trip – a mechanical breakdown, a near miss from a tornado, and a large-scale flood were among these events. But even without these turns of fate, the drama of the landscape, the close-up view of the trucking lifestyle, and the opportunity to observe the cultural habits of a wide swath of western North America would have been sufficient to fill up an interesting journal.

The travelogue is about 20,000 words, about 60 to 90 minutes of reading, at typical reading speeds.
