Thailand Travel Guide: How to Travel to Thailand Independently

by Ivana Greslikova

DISCOVER THAILAND: THE LAND OF SMILES

Thailand is a fascinating country with an incredible diversity in natural and historical sites, exotic cuisine and a huge range of activities to do. It doesn’t matter if you are a budget traveler, an adventurer, an outdoor lover, a luxury traveler or a first-time visitor in Asia, Thailand will welcome you with open arms and heart.

Despite the fact that it’s become one of the most popular destinations in Asia (and in the world!), there are still lots of off the beaten path places with genuine locals and unspoilt nature.

Thailand stole our hearts during our first visit in 2013. Since then we’ve been returning periodically and calling it home for extended amounts of time. We’ve ventured through the north, south, east and west of Thailand and visited lesser known corners of the country as well as popular sites. Our time with kind-hearted locals taught us more about the local culture and country’s history.

We’ve volunteered at an international NGO that protects the natural habitat of elephants. We’ve organized photowalks in the Northern part of the country and gave a speech about responsible travel in Bangkok. One of our travel pieces on Thailand was published in the UK edition of the Psychologies magazine. We were also honoured to be guests on the travel show The Passion, which airs on Thai national TV.

In this travel guide, we’ll share our knowledge on Thailand with hopes to inspire you to travel to Thailand independently, without a travel agent, and to explore the country at your own pace and according to your interests.

This is the e-book for people looking for detailed information on Thailand, including Thai culture, transportation, accommodations, food, things to do and places to visit in Thailand. Thailand Travel Guide will help you plan and enjoy your trip.

The Postcard Maker: Pen-and-ink Postcards from Three Continents by Bohme

by Lawrence Bohme

Author Lawrence Bohme has been illustrating his own books and making pen-and-ink postcards for over 30 years, and on three different continents. His original drawings have been sold in book and card shops in New York, Paris and Rio de Janeiro, as well as published in his own travel books and memoirs. At last he has brought together over 100 postcards of the life and scenes of famous cities and little-known villages alike in a single volume, with a running narrative that tells about the subject of each drawing and how the artist’s nomadic life led him to travel to it.

About the authorâ?¦

Lawrence Bohme was born in 1942 in London, to an English mother and a German refugee father, emigrating to Vancouver, Canada, after the war. At age 14, Lawrence travelled to Mexico with his mother, who wanted to become a painter. It was in Mexico City that Lawrence learned to speak the first of his current five languages. The small family later lived in Jamaica, British West Indies, and in New York’s Greenwich Village.

In 1960 Lawrence went on to study at the University of Madrid, where he acquired the second name of “Lorenzo”, and later also at the Sorbonne in Paris. In 1965, finding himself in San Francisco, he sailed to Rio on a freighter to fulfill his dream of living in a favela, staying in Brazil five years. Always with the writing of a book about his travels in mind, he spent two years in Haiti and three years in Colombia, living also on the islands of San Andres, Grand Cayman, Saint Martin and Saint Barths, where he worked as a leather craftsman and pen-and-ink postcard artist.

He returned to Europe in 1981, becoming a translator for Unesco in Paris and eventually finding his way back to southern Spain. There, he settled in the olive-farming town of Montefrio and wrote several “artistic and historical guide books” about his village Montefrio and also Granada, the city of the Alhambra Palace. He has been at work for the past ten years on his memoir, “Lorenzo, The Story of a Very Long Youth”, and has thus far completed seven volumes “each one the length of a normal-sized novel”, which are published separately on Amazon. He is now working on the last three volumes of the series, which reaches its cataclysmic end in Paris, in the year 1983.

A journalist recently asked Laurence why he calls his book the story of a “very long” youth. The author explained that his youth went on much longer than is considered normal, given that it wasn’t until the age of forty-one that an “emotional earthquake” forced him to finally start “growing up”. He added, with a trace of irony, that the title also expresses his gratitude to “a God I can’t help believing in for granting me so many years to make an ass of myself”.

For many years a leather craftsmen, Laurence began by doing drawings of Caribbean islands to sell in his workshop, and when they “took off” he put down knife and awl and set out to conquer the world with his pen. You can read “The Postcard Maker” as an art book reflecting the work of a self-taught “drawer” as Lawrence calls himself, or as the free-wheeling adventure story of a curious and restless man who couldn’t see enough of the world.

Hell in Cartagena, Heaven on San Andrés Island (My Very Long Youth, Book 12)

by Lawrence Bohme

Book 12 of Lawrence’s youthful adventures, 1973-76.
Fleeing Haiti in the nick of time, Lawrence, excited by his mother’s fanciful description of the Caribbean seaport Cartagena de Indias, based solely on a Hollywood movie she saw which was filmed there (“Burn!”, starring Marlon Brando) recklessly transfers his leather business there, in blissful ignorance of Colombia’s reputation for rampant crime. He sets up his workshop in the picturesque old town, on “Rum Shop Street”, and enlists a whimsically chivalrous Colombian hippie, Wilson, to help him run it. He is lured under her mosquito net by a sensuous Cartagenera who lives on a salt-water lagoon near the airport but fears she might be hoping to snare him in a net harder to get out of… His shop does well, catering to the American tourist trade, but after only a few months is one night stripped clean by well-informed burglars. The cost of replacing everything leaves Lawrence unable to pay the large bribe demanded by the central government in exchange for issuing him and his mother residence permits, so he marries Wilson’s common-law wife and his mother marries Wilson in a light-hearted ceremony performed by a Justice of the Peace who is Wilson’s sister-in-lawâ?¦ Lawrence struggles on for a few more months, but an unpleasant incident with a corrupt policeman who steals his passport sickens him of Cartagena. On an exploratory visit for a better place, he falls in love with the tiny island of San Andrés, a distant Colombian possession near Nicaragua which, being originally British, is still faithful to its original owners, 150 years after their departureâ?¦ Lawrence is amazed to find that the people resent the “panyas” (Spaniards, as they call the usurping Colombians) and still speak “Afro-Victorian” English among one another. He sets up his new “Tradewinds Boutique” in a stilted wooden house on the island’s leeward shore, where as well as making leather goods he sells his first pen-and-ink postcards of island scenes. He also finds happiness in the loving arms of Lavernia, who works in the souvenir shop which carries his wares in town, and marriage plans are madeâ?¦ He befriends the old-timers living up and down the stretch of shore called “Garf”, old Joab who was a policeman in Panama when the Canal was built, the strait-laced spinster Miss Muriel who chides him for chasing after the local “hussies”, and Black Beddy, the rakish fisherman who plays rude calypsos on his guitar and shares his “grass house” with the sun-burned hippie girls who pass by in their pareosâ?¦ A rather pitiful Frenchman, whom Lawrence befriended when his sail boat arrived in Haiti – while fleeing from the Guadeloupe police for a serious smuggling offence – turns up two years later on San Andrés looking for a job, after getting rid of his boat for fear it could be recognized. Lawrence once more takes “Johnny” under his wing and puts him to making leather goods, as well as mixing drinks at the shows of “Black Beddy and His Mad Dogs”, the island band he’s put together for the American tourists. But Johnny soon betrays him and attempts to take over his leather business and the profitable “Calypso Party” too, by joining forces with the Lebanese souvenir shop owner (Lavernia’s boss) to have marijuana deposited in his home and then tell the police, for the evil purpose of eliminating Lawrence’s competition, and Lawrence too… By that time, our hero has quarrelled with Lavernia and made young Bessie, whose mother cooks stuffed rock crabs in a hut, pregnant. The general atmosphere having deteriorated, Lawrence decides to push on to a nearby British island, Grand Cayman, and after promising Bessie to send for her once he’s set up there, he and his mother – with her family of six dachshunds – fly north across the seaâ?¦

Medical Dictionary for Travellers Italian-English

by Edita Ciglenecki

The audience for this dictionary includes medical professionals working in multilingual environments; global health professionals in tourist areas; professionals in public health, humanitarian medicine, emergency disaster management, rescue teams and above all, frequent travellers disposed to any kind of danger or health risk and therefore in the need of medical assistance while in some foreign speaking country. In emergency situations even small misunderstandings can lead to the loss of valuable time and consequently lives, therefore this dictionary is created in very practical time-saving and easy-to-understand way for both medical professionals and their patients. Instead of one classical A to Z alphabetical order, it consists of over 3000 medical terms divided to several topics where terms regarding each topic are organized alphabetically. The topics start from very basic subjects of numbers and orientation and proceed with terminology concerning accidents and disasters, parts of the human body, injuries, symptoms and diseases, pharmacy, medical facilities, medical procedures, diagnostics, pregnancy and obstetrics.

When Dogs See Ghosts & Spirits

by Sherri Granato

Dogs and ghosts go hand in hand, primarily due to the fact that animals have a keen sense of smell and sight. The show, Animal Planet featured cure cottages in a series dubbed “The Haunted” by taking you through a virtual tour of one of the cure cottages owned by Mike and Jennifer Todd that has been revamped into an apartment building. The couple’s dogs, Lily and Jasmine were disturbed by presences that continued to plague the cottages and eventually tenants and the owners themselves were met with the obvious. The place was haunted by many different entities and these spirits were beginning to get irritated by all of the renovations taking place.

The Taiwan Experience: Taiwan’s Peaceful Evolution from Dictatorship to Democracy Seen Through the Eyes of a Foreigner and ROC National

by Alix Lee

This book is the first of three covering Taiwan’s gradual evolution over several decades from a one-party dictatorship to a vibrant multi-party democracy. It deals with the social as well as political changes that have taken place in Taiwan, as seen from the point of view of a foreigner and a Taiwan citizen.

A foreigner and a Taiwan citizen? Two people? No, just one. I arrived in Taiwan on a British passport in 1986 and swapped my British nationality for Taiwan (ROC) nationality about 10 years ago.

The book first gives the history of Taiwan to provide the background necessary to understand the complex present-day circumstances of this island. Then, the political circumstances and developments from 1986 to 1992 are narrated in Part Two from the point of view of an initially rather reluctant observer. Part Three focuses more on social change during this same time period. These years represent Taiwan’s initial opening up from a society that had been under martial law for nearly four decades, the longest period any country in the world had suffered martial law at the time. Book Two will cover the years from 1992 to 2003, and draw comparisons with other countries in the region, particularly the other three of the four ‘Asian Tigers’; South Korea, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

At the time of this writing, Taiwan is going to the polls in the 2018 so-called ‘nine-in-one’ local elections. Apart from the elections themselves, there are 10 referendums. Even I will cast a vote shortly, for the first time in my life. Public participation in the administration of Taiwan has reached unprecedented levels. But it hasn’t always been this way…
