Facebook Content Monitor Jobs Horrible, Mentally Destructive: Information Technology Work Perpetually Boring, Dark Non-Existence Online

by Dave Masko

Facebook Content Monitor Jobs Horrible, Mentally Destructive, by Dave Masko. Working for Facebook and other social networking platforms as a “content moderator,” has become a metaphor for the Internet of things being a virtual cesspool; while spotlighting reasons why humans should limit their time spent staring at screens. For instance, Facebook “content moderators” are blowing the whistle on having to “watch a man die,” or view endless hours of hate speech, racists who like Trump, or hour after hour of violent porn because that’s the job of those paid to review “content” on Facebook. “I’d say we Facebook content moderators number in the tens of thousands across the land to view all the junk, and some good stuff, posted on Facebook,” says Charlie MacIntyre, a 23-year-old University of Oregon (UO) senior who recently quit “this content moderator gig because â??IT’ was literally doing my head in. Moderating sounds cool at first, but after you have to sit and view so much shit online, it sickens your soul and IT really turned me off to tech in a way too because who needs to view that shit 24/7? I want to enjoy my life and not be in a room looking at shit on screens no matter how much Facebook pays,” adds MacIntyre with a loud and booking voice, while outside at a U of O practice track in Eugene, Oregon. “Hey, look around, this is â??Pre Country,’ and that means we run outdoors with the wind in our hair like our Pre,” added MacIntyre who idolizes fellow U of O track legend Steve “Pre” Prefontaine; while Pre is featured on the cover of this special “new journalism” e-book with Pre’s famed hair blowing the wind. At the same time, MacIntyre said he changed his major from computer science to pre-law midway through his college career here at the U of O “because, you know, I don’t want to be imprisoned behind a computer screen or leashed to a smartphone all day long and all night long like my friends who graduated and now making big bucks in the Valley or up in Seattle.” The U of O senior went on to explain how “Facebook content monitoring jobs most of all are said to be really, really â??horrible, and mentally destructive’ because the work of staring at a screen to read some evil shit from Trump or another racists on Facebook would just make me ill mentally. I couldn’t deal with any job that keeps me in doors all day,” added the senior with hopes of taking a break year before starting law school after graduating. “Yea, I want to volunteer and pay it forward in some way to help fight this climate crisis. Then, maybe environmental law to push back against the Trumps of this world who deny climate change only to line their pockets as greedy old white men.” At the same time, MacIntyre shared research from fellow U of O students who are also cooling their jets when re-considering high paying work being offered by the odious information technology industry down the West Coast in the infamous Silicon Valley. This special report focuses on the so-called “Valley,” and why many view IT as a sort of “Secret State” because IT backs Donald Trump and other evil Republicans who want to surveil and data mine Facebook users for all ITs worth. While Facebook and other social networking platform “Big Brothers” pay upwards of six figures for coders and others skilled at creating highly addictive apps and other software, the content moderator gigs generally “pay about $30K and IT’s not worth IT at all when you consider having to sit and view thousands of really boring and horrible videos and other posts for upwards of eight to 10 hours or more a day, and it’s everyday like this,” explained MacIntyre when sharing what his computer science classmates are hearing about Facebook’s content moderator jobs that mirror what all online users face online. “Lonely. Boring and sometimes horrible!”
